International Removals from the UK

Moving abroad from the UK is no longer just a logistics exercise — since Brexit it is a customs exercise too. Whether you are relocating to Spain for retirement, taking a job in the Netherlands or shipping a household to Australia, the removal itself is only half the work. The other half is paperwork, and getting it wrong is what turns a smooth move into a container sitting at a port accruing storage charges.

Flyto Relocation has been organising cross-border household moves since 2018. We run our own hubs in Northern, Central and Southern Europe and work with vetted partner companies elsewhere. We do not operate a UK branch office: UK collections are carried out by vetted partner crews, while planning, customs coordination, line-haul and delivery run through Flyto’s European hub network. That structure is why we can price a UK-to-Europe move as one continuous journey rather than a chain of handoffs.

Who moves abroad from the UK

Our UK-origin enquiries cluster into a few recognisable groups, each with different priorities.

  • Retirees heading to Spain, France and Portugal. Full-household consignments, often with a property purchase in progress. Customs relief eligibility and storage matter most here.
  • Professionals and families relocating within Europe. Germany, the Netherlands, Ireland, the Nordics — fixed start dates and employer deadlines.
  • Returning nationals and long-term expats. Mixed consignments: some items shipped, some stored, some sold.
  • Overseas relocations. Australia, New Zealand, the US, Canada, the Gulf, Singapore. Sea freight, longer lead times, stricter quarantine and inventory rules.
  • Students, contractors and small-load movers. A few cubic metres rather than a household — groupage territory.

The post-Brexit customs point, stated clearly

This is the most misunderstood part of international removals from the UK, so it is worth being blunt.

The United Kingdom is outside the EU customs union. A move from Manchester to Málaga is therefore not an intra-EU move. It requires an export declaration leaving the UK and an import declaration entering the destination country — the same procedural category as a shipment to a country outside Europe altogether, even though the lorry simply drives onto a ferry. Movers who quote as though nothing changed are quoting a job they will later have to re-price.

The good news is that relief usually exists. Most EU destinations operate a transfer-of-residence relief that can exempt used personal effects from import duty and VAT when someone genuinely moves their normal residence there, subject to conditions — typically proof of residence at both ends, ownership and use of the goods for a minimum period before the move, a detailed valued inventory, and a restriction on selling them for a period after import. Moving to the UK, the equivalent is Transfer of Residence (ToR) relief, which must be approved before the goods arrive.

Rules, thresholds and forms differ by country and change over time. Treat the above as orientation, not a ruling: confirm the current position with HMRC and your destination customs authority.

How the move actually runs

  1. Survey and quotation. Volume estimated by video survey, on-site visit or structured inventory. Volume drives everything downstream, so an honest estimate beats an optimistic one.
  2. Booking and documentation. Dates confirmed, customs paperwork started, inventory prepared. Overseas moves begin here earliest, because sailing schedules are fixed.
  3. Packing and collection. A UK partner crew packs and loads. Full-pack, part-pack or self-pack all affect price and insurance terms.
  4. Export clearance and line-haul. The consignment leaves the UK by road with a ferry or tunnel crossing, or moves to a port for container loading.
  5. Hub coordination. European consignments route through a Flyto hub, where groupage loads are consolidated or split and delivery is scheduled.
  6. Import clearance and delivery. Customs release, then delivery, unloading, furniture reassembly and debris removal as booked.

Transport modes by destination

European moves almost always travel by road plus ferry or Channel Tunnel, as a dedicated load or as groupage sharing trailer space. Overseas moves travel by sea container — a full container (FCL) for a whole house, or shared space (LCL) for smaller volumes — typically out of Southampton, Felixstowe or London Gateway. Air freight costs a multiple of sea freight and earns its place for a suitcase-plus of essentials, rarely for a household.

EU destination (e.g. Spain, France, Germany) Overseas (e.g. Australia, US, Gulf)
Transport Road + ferry/tunnel; groupage or dedicated load Sea container (FCL or shared LCL); air freight for urgent small loads
Customs Export + import declarations required post-Brexit; transfer-of-residence relief often available on conditions Export + import declarations; relief schemes plus quarantine/biosecurity checks in some countries
Typical timeline Roughly a few days to around three weeks door-to-door, depending on distance and groupage consolidation Commonly several weeks to a few months door-to-door, driven by sailing schedules and port clearance

Timelines are planning ranges, not guarantees: consolidation waits, port congestion, customs queries and access problems all move the date.

What drives the cost

We do not publish fixed prices, because a genuine quote depends on your volume, route and access. Anyone advertising a firm figure before knowing those things is quoting a starting point, not a price. What actually moves the number:

  • Volume — measured in cubic metres, the primary driver of every quote.
  • Distance and route — plus ferry or tunnel costs, and for sea freight the port pair and rate environment.
  • Dedicated versus groupage — a dedicated vehicle is faster and dearer; groupage is cheaper and slower.
  • Access at both ends — stairs, narrow streets, parking restrictions, permits, long carries or an external lift.
  • Packing level — full-pack versus self-pack, plus specialist crating for pianos, artwork and antiques.
  • Customs handling — declarations, agent fees, and any duty or VAT if relief does not apply.
  • Season and extras — European summer and month-ends are busiest; storage, disposal, vehicle or pet shipping all add.

As rough market orientation only: European groupage moves are commonly quoted in the low four figures in pounds for a modest flat, rising substantially for a full house or dedicated vehicle; overseas container moves typically start well above that and scale with container size. These are wider-market ranges, not a Flyto quotation, and they shift with fuel, freight rates and demand.

Insurance and storage

Standard carrier liability under international transport conventions is calculated by weight and falls far below the replacement value of household contents. It is not insurance. For an international removal you want a marine or transit policy covering the declared value of your goods, which means preparing a valued inventory — worth doing properly, since it doubles as customs documentation. Check the terms on self-packed cartons, frequently covered only for total loss rather than internal damage, and on high-value items, which usually must be listed individually.

Storage is routine, because completion dates rarely align. It can sit at origin before departure, at a Flyto European hub mid-route, or at destination pending handover. Where goods are stored before customs clearance, their customs status matters — confirm it with your coordinator rather than assuming.

Why the hub network matters

Most UK-origin international moves involve several companies, and the usual failure mode is not incompetence at any single point — it is the handoffs between them, where dates slip and nobody owns the problem. Flyto’s hubs in Northern, Central and Southern Europe let us run the European leg on our own network with one coordinator responsible end to end, while vetted partner crews handle UK collection and destination delivery where we do not operate directly. One point of contact, one inventory, one timeline.

Tell us where you are moving from and to, roughly what you are taking and when you need it there, and we will come back with a realistic plan — transport mode, customs route, honest timeline and a price built on your actual volume rather than a headline figure. Start your international removal quote and speak to a relocation advisor about your move from the UK.
