What should I know before moving to Estonia?
Estonia joined the EU in 2004, the Schengen Area on 21 December 2007 and adopted the euro in 2011. The standard VAT (käibemaks) rate is 22% (raised from 20% in January 2024). Tallinn (~440k people) is the capital and a leading European tech hub — home to Skype, Wise, Bolt and the world-renowned e-Residency programme. Tartu, Narva and Pärnu are other major hubs. Public administration runs through eesti.ee. Major banks: Swedbank, SEB and LHV.
How does a move from Estonia to another country normally work?
Moves leaving Estonia involve a detailed inventory, route planning, and — for non-EU destinations like the UK, Switzerland, USA or Canada — a T1 transit document plus an import declaration at destination. EU moves need no customs forms. We can also notify MTA (Maksu- ja Tolliamet) of your departure, deregister you from the population register via eesti.ee, and handle the Tervisekassa coverage transition.
What does an international relocation involving Estonia typically include?

How long do international moves to or from Estonia take?
European road moves: 3–7 days. Examples: Tallinn → Helsinki ~2h ferry, Tallinn → Riga ~4h truck, Tallinn → Berlin ~16h via Poland. Overseas: 3–6 weeks by sea container from the ports of Tallinn or Klaipėda (Lithuania), 7–10 days by air freight for urgent loads.
Do I need customs paperwork when relocating internationally?
EU-to-EU moves don’t need customs forms. Non-EU destinations (UK, Switzerland, Norway, USA, Canada) need a T1 transit document, a detailed English-language inventory and a customs import declaration at destination. For personal-effects duty relief, proof of residence change is also required.
Can I bring my belongings into Estonia duty-free?
From any EU country: yes, free movement applies. From outside the EU: personal household goods imported within 12 months of changing residence to Estonia are duty-free under EU Regulation 1186/2009, provided you have owned them for at least 6 months and they are for personal use.
Are there restricted items when entering Estonia?
Yes. Estonia restricts weapons, alcohol, tobacco, plants, certain foods and some electronics. We provide clear guidance based on your belongings.
Do I need to register after moving to Estonia?
Yes. New residents must register their address with the local omavalitsus (municipality) — most of it is done online via eesti.ee using an Estonian ID card or e-Residency digital ID. Non-EU citizens first need a residence permit from PPA (Politsei- ja Piirivalveamet). Health insurance is via Tervisekassa (Estonian Health Insurance Fund).
