What should I know when moving to Sweden?
Sweden joined the EU in 1995 and the Schengen Area on 25 March 2001. The standard VAT rate is 25%. Public health insurance is administered by Försäkringskassan. Major banks: Handelsbanken, SEB, Swedbank. Many expats arrive for tech and engineering roles in Stockholm, Gothenburg or Malmö.
How does a move from Sweden to another country usually work?
Moves leaving Sweden involve a detailed inventory, route planning, and — for non-EU destinations like the UK, Switzerland, USA or Canada — a T1 transit document plus an import declaration at destination. EU moves need no customs forms. We file your final Skatteverket notification of departure if you’re relocating permanently.

Do I need customs paperwork when relocating?
EU-to-EU moves don’t need customs forms. Non-EU destinations (UK, Switzerland, Norway, USA, Canada) need a T1 transit document, a detailed English-language inventory and a customs import declaration at destination. For personal-effects duty relief, proof of residence change is also required.
Can I bring my belongings to Sweden without paying customs duties?
From any EU country: yes, free movement applies. From outside the EU: personal household goods imported within 12 months of changing residence to Sweden are duty-free under EU Regulation 1186/2009, provided you have owned them for at least 6 months and they are for personal use.
Are there restricted items when entering Sweden?
Yes. Restrictions apply to weapons, alcohol, plants, food products and certain electronics. We provide clear instructions based on what you plan to bring.
Do I need to register when moving to Sweden?
Yes. EU/EEA citizens register their stay with Skatteverket (folkbokföring — population registration) after arrival. Non-EU citizens need a residence permit from Migrationsverket first, then register with Skatteverket. We prepare the documents and book appointments.
