What should I know when moving to Belgium?

Belgium is a founding EU member (1957) and joined the Schengen Area on 26 March 1995. The standard VAT rate is 21%; the currency is the euro. Belgium is officially trilingual: Dutch in Flanders, French in Wallonia and Brussels, German in the eastern cantons. Brussels hosts the European Commission, Council, Parliament and NATO HQ — a major draw for expats. Major banks: KBC, BNP Paribas Fortis, Belfius.

How does a move from Belgium to another country work?

Moves leaving Belgium need a detailed inventory and route plan. EU destinations are paperwork-free for personal effects. For non-EU destinations (UK, Switzerland, Norway, USA, Canada) we prepare a T1 transit document, English-language inventory and a customs import declaration at destination. We also coordinate your final notification of departure with the SPF Finances / FOD Financiën and your local commune / gemeente if you’re relocating permanently.

How do international relocations involving Belgium typically progress?

Whether a move begins or ends in Belgium, we manage packing, loading, transport planning, customs support and home delivery — with friendly communication throughout the entire process.

What are the most common relocation destinations from Belgium?

Popular moving routes include France, the Netherlands, Germany, Luxembourg, and the UK. Long-distance relocations often go to the USA, Canada and Africa due to Belgium’s diverse international community.

How long do international moves to or from Belgium usually take?

European road moves: 2–6 days. Examples: Brussels → Paris ~3.5h drive, Brussels → Amsterdam ~2h, Antwerp → London 8–10h (incl. Channel crossing), Brussels → Berlin 7–8h. Overseas: 2–6 weeks by sea container, 7–10 days by air freight for urgent loads.

Do I need customs paperwork for an international move?

EU-to-EU moves don’t need customs forms — Belgium is a founding EU member with free movement of goods. Non-EU destinations (UK, Switzerland, Norway, USA, Canada) need a T1 transit document, a detailed English-language inventory and a customs import declaration at destination. For personal-effects duty relief, proof of residence change is also required.

Can I bring my belongings to Belgium duty-free?

From any EU country: yes, free movement applies. From outside the EU: personal household goods imported within 12 months of changing residence to Belgium are duty-free under EU Regulation 1186/2009, provided you have owned them for at least 6 months and they are for personal use. The declaration is filed with Belgian Customs (AAD&A).

Are there restricted items when entering Belgium?

Yes. Belgium restricts weapons, tobacco, alcohol, food products, plants and certain electronics. We offer guidance based on the items you plan to bring.

Do I need to register when moving to Belgium?

Yes. EU/EEA citizens must register at the local commune / gemeente (city hall) within 8 days of arrival. Non-EU citizens need a visa or residence permit from the Office des étrangers / Dienst Vreemdelingenzaken first, then complete their address registration with the commune. Health coverage runs through your chosen mutuelle / ziekenfonds (Mutualité chrétienne, Solidaris, etc.). We prepare the paperwork and book appointments.

Does Flyto offer local moving assistance inside Belgium?

Yes. Through reliable partners, we can assist with local moves in Brussels, Antwerp, Ghent, Bruges, Liège and surrounding regions.

Do you deliver everywhere in Belgium, including small towns?

Absolutely. We deliver across the entire country — from major cities to rural areas and border regions with France, Germany, and the Netherlands.

Is additional moving insurance recommended?

We recommend extra coverage for valuable or fragile items. Our team can arrange suitable insurance options tailored to your needs.
