What is good to know before moving to Austria?
Austria joined the EU in 1995 and the Schengen Area on 1 December 1997. The standard VAT (USt) rate is 20%. Vienna (~1.95M people) hosts the UN office and many EU agencies; Graz, Linz and Salzburg are major regional hubs. Public administration runs through help.gv.at. Major banks: Erste Bank, Bank Austria (UniCredit), Raiffeisen.
How does a relocation from Austria to another country typically work?
Moves leaving Austria involve a detailed inventory, route planning, and — for non-EU destinations like the UK, Switzerland, USA or Canada — a T1 transit document plus an import declaration at destination. EU moves need no customs forms. We can also notify Finanzamt Österreich of your departure and help with the Meldezettel deregistration at the local Meldebehörde via help.gv.at.
What steps are involved when relocating to or from Austria?
Whether your move begins or ends in Austria, we assist with packing, loading, customs guidance, international transport and final delivery — always keeping you informed along the way.
What are the most common destinations people move to from Austria?
Popular destinations include Germany, Switzerland, Italy, Hungary, the Netherlands and France. Many long-distance relocations also go to the USA, UK and Canada.
How long do international moves involving Austria usually take?
European road moves: 2–6 days. Examples: Vienna → Munich ~5h truck, Vienna → Budapest ~3h, Vienna → Berlin ~9h. Overseas: 3–6 weeks by sea container from the ports of Hamburg or Koper (Slovenia), 7–10 days by air freight for urgent loads.
Do I need customs paperwork when moving internationally?
EU-to-EU moves don’t need customs forms. Non-EU destinations (UK, Switzerland, Norway, USA, Canada) need a T1 transit document, a detailed English-language inventory and a customs import declaration at destination. For personal-effects duty relief, proof of residence change is also required.
Can I bring my belongings to Austria duty-free?
From any EU country: yes, free movement applies. From outside the EU: personal household goods imported within 12 months of changing residence to Austria are duty-free under EU Regulation 1186/2009, provided you have owned them for at least 6 months and they are for personal use.
Are there restricted items when entering Austria?
Yes. Restrictions apply to weapons, certain foods, plants, large alcohol quantities and specific electronic equipment. We provide clear instructions based on your belongings.
Do I need to register after arriving in Austria?
Yes. New residents must register their address (Meldezettel) at the local Meldebehörde within 3 working days of arrival — see help.gv.at. Non-EU citizens first need a residence permit from BMI (Federal Ministry of the Interior); in Vienna applications run through MA 35. Health insurance is via ÖGK (Österreichische Gesundheitskasse).
Does Flyto provide local moving assistance inside Austria?
Yes. Through our partner network, we support local relocations in Vienna, Salzburg, Graz, Linz, Innsbruck and surrounding regions.
Do you deliver everywhere in Austria, including mountain areas?
Absolutely. We deliver nationwide — from major cities to Alpine villages, remote regions and rural towns.
Should I take additional moving insurance?
Extra coverage is recommended for fragile or high-value items, especially for long international routes. We can arrange suitable insurance options.
