What should I know before moving to Portugal?

Portugal joined the European Communities in 1986 and the Schengen Area on 26 March 1995. The standard VAT (IVA) rate is 23% on the mainland, with reduced rates of 13% and 6%. Madeira (22%) and the Azores (16%) use lower regional rates. The currency is the euro (EUR). New residents register their address with the local Junta de Freguesia and obtain a Número de Identificação Fiscal (NIF) from the Autoridade Tributária (AT). Major banks: Caixa Geral de Depósitos, Millennium BCP, Novo Banco.

How does a move from Portugal to another country typically work?

Moves leaving Portugal start with a detailed inventory and route planning. For non-EU destinations (UK, Switzerland, Norway, USA, Canada, Brazil) we prepare a T1 transit document plus an import declaration at destination. EU moves need no customs paperwork. We can also notify the Autoridade Tributária of your departure and help with deregistration at your local Junta de Freguesia.

What does an international relocation involving Portugal usually include?

Whether your move starts in Portugal or ends here, we take care of packing, loading, transport planning, customs forms and home delivery — making the experience organised and stress-free.

What are the most common destinations people move to from Portugal?

Popular routes include Portugal–Spain, Portugal–France, Portugal–Germany, Portugal–Netherlands and Portugal–UK. Many long-distance relocations also go to Brazil, the USA and Canada.

How long do international moves to or from Portugal take?

European road moves: 3–8 days. Examples: Lisbon → Madrid ~6h, Lisbon → Paris ~22h driving, Porto → Bordeaux ~12h, Lisbon → Rotterdam ~30h. Overseas: 3–6 weeks by sea container from the ports of Lisbon, Leixões (Porto) or Sines, 5–8 days by air freight for urgent loads.

Do I need customs documents for an international relocation?

EU-to-EU moves don’t need customs forms. Non-EU destinations (UK, Switzerland, Norway, USA, Canada, Brazil) need a T1 transit document, a detailed English-language inventory and a customs import declaration at destination. For personal-effects duty relief, proof of residence change is also required.

Can I bring my belongings into Portugal duty-free?

From any EU country: yes, free movement applies. From outside the EU: personal household goods imported within 12 months of changing residence to Portugal are duty-free under EU Regulation 1186/2009, provided you have owned them for at least 6 months and they are for personal use.

Are there items I’m not allowed to bring into Portugal?

Yes. Portugal restricts weapons, certain foods, plants, alcohol exceeding limits and some electronics. We help clarify exactly what is permitted and what is not.

Do I need to register after arriving in Portugal?

Yes. New residents must obtain an NIF (Número de Identificação Fiscal) from the Autoridade Tributária and register at the local Junta de Freguesia for an Atestado de residência. Non-EU citizens first need an autorização de residência from AIMA (Agência para a Integração, Migrações e Asilo) — which replaced SEF in late 2023. Health coverage is then arranged via SNS (Serviço Nacional de Saúde). We prepare documents and book appointments.

Does Flyto offer local moving support inside Portugal?

Yes. With our partner network, we offer local relocations in Lisbon, Porto, Faro, Braga, Coimbra, and surrounding areas.

Do you deliver everywhere in Portugal, including islands?

Absolutely. We deliver nationwide — mainland Portugal, Madeira and the Azores. Island deliveries may require additional logistics planning, which we handle for you.

Should I consider additional insurance for my move?

Extra insurance is recommended for fragile, high-value or long-distance shipments. We can arrange coverage based on your items.
