What should I know when moving to Denmark?

Denmark joined the EU in 1973 and the Schengen Area in 2001. The standard VAT (moms) rate is 25%. Denmark uses the Danish krone (DKK), not the euro — Denmark has a formal opt-out from the euro. Public services and registration are coordinated via borger.dk. Major banks: Danske Bank, Nordea, Jyske Bank. Many newcomers arrive for work in Copenhagen, Aarhus or research roles at Aarhus and Aalborg universities.

How does a move from Denmark to another country work?

Moves leaving Denmark involve a detailed inventory, route planning, and — for non-EU destinations like the UK, Switzerland, USA or Canada — a T1 transit document plus an import declaration at destination. EU moves need no customs forms. We can also notify Skat (Danish Tax Administration) of your departure and help close your CPR registration via borger.dk if you’re moving permanently.

How do international relocations involving Denmark typically progress?

Whether the move begins or ends in Denmark, we assist with packing, loading, customs preparation, transport arrangements and final delivery — always with friendly guidance.

What are the most common relocation destinations from Denmark?

Popular destinations include Sweden, Norway, Germany, the Netherlands, France and Finland. Many long-distance relocations also go to the UK, USA and Canada.

How long do international moves to or from Denmark usually take?

European road moves: 2–7 days. Examples: Copenhagen → Hamburg ~5h truck, Copenhagen → Stockholm via Øresund Bridge 7–9h, Copenhagen → Berlin ~7h via the Fehmarn ferry. Overseas: 2–6 weeks by sea container from the ports of Aarhus or Copenhagen, 7–10 days by air freight for urgent loads.

Do I need customs paperwork for a move from Denmark?

EU-to-EU moves don’t need customs forms. Non-EU destinations (UK, Switzerland, Norway, USA, Canada) need a T1 transit document, a detailed English-language inventory and a customs import declaration at destination. For personal-effects duty relief, proof of residence change is also required.

Can I bring my belongings to Denmark without paying customs duties?

From any EU country: yes, free movement applies. From outside the EU: personal household goods imported within 12 months of changing residence to Denmark are duty-free under EU Regulation 1186/2009, provided you have owned them for at least 6 months and they are for personal use.

Are there restricted items when entering Denmark?

Yes. Denmark restricts items such as weapons, certain food products, plants, large quantities of alcohol and specific electronics. We offer clear guidance on what’s allowed.

Do I need to register when moving to Denmark?

Yes. New residents register their address with the Folkeregister at their local Kommune (municipality) to receive a CPR number (Det Centrale Personregister). Non-EU citizens first need a residence permit from SIRI (Styrelsen for International Rekruttering og Integration). We prepare documents and book appointments via borger.dk.

Does Flyto provide local moving help inside Denmark?

Yes. Through trusted partners, we offer local moving assistance in Copenhagen, Aarhus, Odense, Aalborg and surrounding areas.

Do you deliver everywhere in Denmark, even smaller towns?

Absolutely. We deliver throughout the country — from major cities to small towns and rural areas.

Is additional moving insurance recommended?

We recommend extra coverage for valuable or fragile belongings. We can help arrange suitable insurance options.
