What should I know when moving to the Netherlands?
The Netherlands is a founding EU member (1957) and joined Schengen on 26 March 1995. Standard BTW (VAT) is 21%. Health insurance (zorgverzekering) is mandatory — major providers: Zilveren Kruis, CZ, Menzis, VGZ. Major banks: ING, Rabobank, ABN AMRO. Many expats arrive for tech, finance or research roles in Amsterdam, Rotterdam, The Hague or Utrecht.
How does a move from the Netherlands to another country work?
Moves leaving the Netherlands involve a detailed inventory, route planning, and — for non-EU destinations like the UK, Switzerland, USA or Canada — a T1 transit document plus an import declaration at destination. EU moves need no customs forms. We file your BRP deregistration at the local gemeente if you’re relocating permanently.
How do international relocations involving the Netherlands usually progress?

How long do international moves to or from the Netherlands take?
European road moves: 2–6 days. Examples: Amsterdam → Brussels 2–3 hours, Amsterdam → Berlin 6–7 hours, Amsterdam → Paris 5–6 hours. Overseas: 2–6 weeks by sea container, 7–10 days by air freight for urgent loads.
Do I need customs paperwork for my move?
EU-to-EU moves don’t need customs forms. Non-EU destinations (UK, Switzerland, Norway, USA, Canada) need a T1 transit document, a detailed English-language inventory and a customs import declaration at destination. For personal-effects duty relief, proof of residence change is also required.
Can I bring my belongings to the Netherlands duty-free?
From any EU country: yes, free movement applies. From outside the EU: personal household goods imported within 12 months of changing residence to the Netherlands are duty-free under EU Regulation 1186/2009, provided you have owned them for at least 6 months and they are for personal use.
Are there restricted items when entering the Netherlands?
Yes. Restrictions apply to weapons, certain food products, plants, high-alcohol beverages and some electronics. We provide clear guidance based on your item list.
Do I need to register when moving to the Netherlands?
Yes. New residents must register in the BRP (basisregistratie personen) at the local gemeente within 5 working days of arrival and receive a BSN. Non-EU citizens need a residence permit from the IND (Immigratie- en Naturalisatiedienst) first. We prepare the documents and book appointments.
