What should I know when moving to Luxembourg?
Luxembourg is an EU founding member (1957) and joined Schengen on 26 March 1995. The standard VAT (TVA) rate is 17% — the lowest in the EU. The country is officially trilingual (French, Luxembourgish, German); most offices also work in English. Major banks: BIL, Spuerkeess (BCEE), BGL BNP Paribas. Newcomers commonly arrive for finance, EU institutions, or cross-border roles via the Luxembourg City–Brussels–Strasbourg corridor.
How does a move from Luxembourg to another country work?
Moves leaving Luxembourg start with a detailed inventory and route planning. For non-EU destinations (UK, Switzerland, USA, Canada), we prepare a T1 transit document plus an import declaration at destination. EU moves need no customs forms. We can also notify the ACD (Administration des Contributions Directes) of your departure and help deregister from your commune via guichet.public.lu.

EU-to-EU moves don’t need customs forms. Non-EU destinations (UK, Switzerland, Norway, USA, Canada) need a T1 transit document, a detailed English-language inventory and a customs import declaration at destination. For personal-effects duty relief, proof of residence change is also required.
Can I bring my belongings to Luxembourg duty-free?
From any EU country: yes, free movement applies. From outside the EU: personal household goods imported within 12 months of changing residence to Luxembourg are duty-free under EU Regulation 1186/2009, provided you have owned them for at least 6 months and they are for personal use.
Are there restricted items when entering Luxembourg?
Yes. Restrictions apply to weapons, alcohol, tobacco, plants, seeds and certain electronics. We provide clear guidance based on what you plan to bring.
Do I need to register when moving to Luxembourg?
Yes. New residents must register at their local commune within 8 days of arrival via guichet.public.lu. Non-EU citizens first need a residence permit from the MAEE — Direction de l’Immigration. Health coverage is then activated with the CNS (Caisse nationale de santé). We prepare documents and book appointments.
