What should I know before moving to Spain?
Spain joined the EU in 1986 and the Schengen Area on 26 March 1995. The currency is the euro (EUR) and standard VAT (IVA) is 21%. Major regions for relocation include Madrid, Catalonia (Barcelona), Valencia and Andalusia (Seville, Málaga). Banks like Santander, BBVA and CaixaBank welcome new residents. Cost of living is generally lower than northern Europe — and the climate, food and lifestyle remain a strong draw for retirees, remote workers and families.
How does a move from Spain to another country usually work?
Moves leaving Spain begin with a detailed inventory and route planning. For non-EU destinations (UK, Switzerland, USA, Canada), we prepare a T1 transit document plus an import declaration at destination — EU-internal moves need no customs forms. We can also help notify the Agencia Tributaria of your departure and coordinate de-registration (baja del padrón) at your local ayuntamiento.
What does an international relocation involving Spain typically include?
Whether your move begins or ends in Spain, we take care of packing, loading, customs guidance, logistics planning and delivery — keeping communication clear and friendly throughout.
What are the most common destinations from Spain?
Popular routes include Spain–France, Spain–Germany, Spain–Portugal, Spain–Netherlands and Spain–UK. Long-distance moves often go to the USA, Latin America and Scandinavia.
How long do international moves to or from Spain take?
European road moves: 3–7 days. Examples: Madrid → Paris ~17h truck, Barcelona → Marseille ~5h, Madrid → Berlin ~3 days, Valencia → Amsterdam ~2.5 days. Overseas: 3–6 weeks by sea container from Valencia, Barcelona or Algeciras ports; 7–10 days by air freight for urgent loads.
Do I need customs documents when relocating internationally?
EU-to-EU moves don’t need customs forms. Non-EU destinations (UK, Switzerland, Norway, USA, Canada) require a T1 transit document, a detailed English-language inventory and a customs import declaration at destination. For personal-effects duty relief, proof of residence change is also required.
Can I bring my belongings into Spain duty-free?
From any EU country: yes, free movement applies. From outside the EU: personal household goods imported within 12 months of changing residence to Spain are duty-free under EU Regulation 1186/2009, provided you have owned them for at least 6 months and they are for personal use — and you can show proof via your NIE and empadronamiento.
Are there restricted or prohibited items when entering Spain?
Yes. Restrictions apply to weapons, certain food items, alcohol, plants and some electronics. We provide clear guidance based on your item list.
Do I need to register myself after arriving in Spain?
Yes. New residents must complete empadronamiento at their local ayuntamiento (within ~3 months of arrival). Non-EU citizens first need a residence permit via Extranjería (Oficinas de Extranjeros) and a NIE number. Health coverage is then activated with the regional service (e.g. SERMAS in Madrid, CatSalut in Catalonia) under the Sistema Nacional de Salud. We prepare documents and book appointments.
Does Flyto help with local moves inside Spain?
Yes. We work with trusted partners for local relocations in Madrid, Barcelona, Valencia, Málaga, Seville and other regions.
Do you deliver everywhere in Spain, including islands?
Yes. We deliver nationwide — mainland Spain, Canary Islands and Balearic Islands. Some island deliveries may require additional logistics planning.
Should I take extra moving insurance for Spain?
Extra insurance is recommended for valuable items, artwork or fragile belongings. We can arrange suitable protection based on your needs.
