What should I know when moving to Norway?

Norway is an EFTA/EEA member (not part of the EU) and joined the Schengen Area on 25 March 2001. The currency is the Norwegian krone (NOK) and standard VAT (MVA) is 25%. Public health insurance is provided through Helfo for residents. Major banks: DNB, Nordea, SpareBank 1. Many expats arrive for energy and tech roles in Oslo, Bergen or Stavanger.

How does a move from Norway to another country work?

Because Norway is outside the EU customs union, a move from Norway to any EU country requires a T1 transit document, a detailed English-language inventory and an import declaration at destination. We file your final move-abroad notification with Skatteetaten (Norwegian Tax Administration) if you are relocating permanently.

How do international relocations involving Norway typically progress?

Whether your move begins or ends in Norway, we coordinate packing, loading, transport, customs handling and home delivery with transparent communication throughout the journey.

What are the most common relocation destinations from Norway?

Popular destinations include Sweden, Denmark, Finland, Germany, the Netherlands and Spain. Long-distance destinations often include the United States, the United Kingdom and Canada.

How long do international moves to or from Norway take?

European road moves: 2–7 days. Examples: Oslo → Stockholm 6–8h drive, Oslo → Copenhagen 1–2 days via ferry, Oslo → Berlin 3–4 days truck. Overseas: 2–6 weeks by sea container, 7–10 days by air freight for urgent loads.

Do I need customs paperwork for my move?

Yes. Norway is in the EEA but outside the EU customs union, so customs paperwork is required for every cross-border move. Moves to/from any EU country need a T1 transit document, a detailed inventory and a customs import declaration at destination. We prepare and file the documents on your behalf.

Can I bring household goods into Norway without duties?

If you are moving to Norway permanently, personal household goods you have owned for at least 12 months and used in your previous residence may be imported duty-free under Norway’s flyttegods (removal goods) rules. The declaration is filed with Norwegian Customs (Tolletaten). Cars, motorcycles, alcohol and tobacco are subject to separate rules.

Are there restricted items when entering Norway?

Yes. Restrictions apply to alcohol, plants, food products, weapons, and certain electronics. We offer clear guidance on what is allowed.

Do I need to register when moving to Norway?

Yes. EU/EEA citizens register with Skatteetaten for a Norwegian D-number / national identity number (Folkeregisteret), then attend an in-person ID check. Non-EU/EEA citizens need a residence permit from UDI (Norwegian Directorate of Immigration) first, then register with Folkeregisteret. Public welfare and health services are administered through NAV and Helfo. We prepare the paperwork and book appointments.

Does Flyto offer local moving help inside Norway?

Yes. Through trusted partners, we assist with local moves in Oslo, Bergen, Trondheim, Stavanger and surrounding regions.

Do you deliver everywhere in Norway, including remote areas?

Absolutely. We deliver across Norway — from major cities to small towns and remote northern regions.

Is additional moving insurance recommended?

We recommend extra coverage for valuable, fragile or high-end items. We can arrange insurance options based on your needs.
