What should I know when moving to Germany?

Germany joined the European Communities in 1957 (founding member) and the Schengen Area on 26 March 1995. The standard VAT (Mehrwertsteuer / MwSt) rate is 19%, with a reduced 7% rate for certain goods. The country uses the euro (EUR). New residents must register their address (Anmeldung) within 14 days at the local Bürgeramt. Statutory health insurance is provided through funds like TK and AOK; private (PKV) cover is optional. Major banks: Deutsche Bank, Commerzbank, Sparkasse.

How does a move from Germany to another country work?

Moves leaving Germany involve a detailed inventory, route planning, and — for non-EU destinations like the UK, Switzerland, Norway, USA or Canada — a T1 transit document plus an import declaration at destination. EU moves need no customs paperwork. We can also notify the Bundeszentralamt für Steuern of your departure and help with the Abmeldung (de-registration) at your local Bürgeramt.

How do international relocations involving Germany typically progress?

Whether your move begins or ends in Germany, we manage packing, loading, transport planning, customs paperwork and final delivery — always with clear communication.

What are the most common relocation destinations from Germany?

Popular routes include Germany–Netherlands, Germany–France, Germany–Austria, Germany–Switzerland, and Germany–Scandinavia. Many long-distance relocations also go to the USA, UK, Canada and Asia.

How long do international moves to or from Germany take?

European road moves: 2–6 days. Examples: Berlin → Helsinki via ferry ~36h, Munich → Vienna ~6h, Hamburg → Amsterdam ~6h, Cologne → Paris ~6h. Overseas: 2–6 weeks by sea container from the ports of Hamburg or Bremerhaven, 7–10 days by air freight for urgent loads.

Do I need customs paperwork for an international move?

EU-to-EU moves don’t require customs paperwork. Non-EU destinations (UK, Switzerland, Norway, USA, Canada) need a T1 transit document, a detailed inventory and a customs import declaration at destination. For personal-effects duty relief, proof of residence change is required.

Can I bring my household goods to Germany duty-free?

From any EU country: yes, free movement applies. From outside the EU: personal household goods imported within 12 months of changing residence to Germany are duty-free under EU Regulation 1186/2009, provided you have owned them for at least 6 months and they are for personal use.

Are there restricted items when entering Germany?

Yes. Restrictions apply to weapons, tobacco, alcohol, food products, plants and certain electronics. We provide clear instructions based on item lists.

Do I need to register when moving to Germany?

Yes. New residents must register their address (Anmeldung) within 14 days at the local Bürgeramt / Einwohnermeldeamt. Non-EU citizens generally need a residence permit via the BAMF (Bundesamt für Migration und Flüchtlinge) and the local Ausländerbehörde. We help prepare documents and book appointments.

Does Flyto offer local moving assistance in Germany?

Yes. Through trusted partners, we offer local moving help in Berlin, Hamburg, Munich, Frankfurt, Cologne and other regions.

Do you deliver everywhere in Germany, including smaller towns?

Absolutely. We provide nationwide delivery — from major metropolitan areas to small towns and rural locations.

Is additional moving insurance recommended?

Yes, especially for high-value items or long-distance transport routes. We offer optional insurance for added peace of mind.
