What should I know before moving to Ireland?

Ireland joined the EU (then EEC) in 1973 and uses the euro, but is not part of Schengen — instead it shares the Common Travel Area with the UK. Standard VAT is 23%. New residents need a PPS Number from the Department of Social Protection, and non-EEA citizens register with the Immigration Service Delivery (Department of Justice). Major banks: AIB, Bank of Ireland, PTSB.

How does a relocation from Ireland to mainland Europe work?

Most outbound moves from Ireland use the Dublin → Holyhead, Rosslare → Cherbourg or Rosslare → Pembroke ferry routes. To mainland EU destinations (France, Netherlands, Germany) no customs paperwork is needed. To the UK — even though we share the Common Travel Area — full customs declarations are required since Brexit (2021). We file the final Revenue notification of departure if you’re relocating permanently.

Do I need customs documents when moving to or from Ireland?

Ireland is in the EU — no customs forms for moves within EU member states. Non-EU destinations (UK, Switzerland, Norway, USA, Canada) need a T1 transit document, a detailed English-language inventory and a customs import declaration at destination. For personal-effects duty relief under EU Regulation 1186/2009, proof of residence change is also required. Note: Brexit means UK shipments need full customs declarations now.

How long does an international move involving Ireland take?

European moves typically take 3–7 days depending on distance and ferry schedules. Overseas relocations may take several weeks depending on shipping routes.

What are the most common relocation routes to and from Ireland?

Most popular EU routes from Dublin / Cork: Ireland → UK (Dublin–Holyhead ferry, ~3.5h sailing), Ireland → Netherlands (Rosslare–Cherbourg + truck, 4–6 days), Ireland → Germany (4–6 days), Ireland → France (Cherbourg / Cherbourg, 3–5 days) and Ireland → Spain (5–7 days). Long-haul: USA, Canada, Australia and UAE via Dublin Port container shipping.

Can I bring my belongings to Ireland duty-free?

From any EU country: yes, free movement applies. From outside the EU: personal household goods imported within 12 months of changing residence to Ireland are duty-free under EU Regulation 1186/2009, provided you have owned them for at least 6 months and they are for personal use. Revenue handles the import declaration through their AEP/AIS system.

Does Flyto offer local moving assistance within Ireland?

Yes — through our Irish partners we cover Dublin (including Dublin 2, 4, 6, 14 and the western suburbs), Cork city & harbour, Galway, Limerick, Waterford and the Greater Dublin commuter belt (Kildare, Wicklow, Meath). Same-day local relocations available in the major cities.

Do you deliver to all parts of Ireland, including rural areas?

Absolutely. We deliver nationwide — from major cities to rural villages and coastal towns.

How does parking and access work in Irish cities?

Some Dublin, Cork and Galway streets are narrow Georgian terraces or have parking restrictions (especially Dublin 2, 4 and the city centre). We coordinate parking permits with the local council, plan loading zones and book bus-lane suspensions where needed. Apartment blocks with lift access are factored into crew sizing.

Do I need extra insurance for an Irish relocation?

Extra protection is recommended for fragile or high-value items. We offer optional insurance to provide full peace of mind during transport.

How does Flyto make sure my belongings are safe?

We use professional packing materials, protective wrapping, secure loading systems and GPS-equipped vehicles — ensuring your belongings travel safely throughout Ireland and beyond.

Can Flyto help with settling-in support in Ireland?

Yes. We help with your PPS Number (Department of Social Protection — needed for work, banking and tax), Revenue registration, HSE medical card application, bank account opening at AIB / Bank of Ireland / PTSB, school enrolment (CAO for third level), and — for non-EEA arrivals — Garda registration via Immigration Service Delivery.
