What should I know before relocating to Switzerland?
Switzerland is outside the EU but joined the Schengen Area on 12 December 2008. The currency is the Swiss franc (CHF) and standard VAT (MwSt) is 8.1%. Health insurance is mandatory and private — major providers include CSS, Helsana, Sanitas and Swica (Krankenkasse / KVG). Major banks: UBS, Raiffeisen, ZKB. Many expats arrive for finance and tech roles in Zürich, international organisations in Geneva, or pharma in Basel.
How does a move from Switzerland to another country usually work?
Because Switzerland is outside the EU customs union, every move from Switzerland to an EU country requires a T1 transit document, a detailed English-language inventory and an import declaration at destination. We file the export declaration with Swiss Customs and the deregistration with your commune (Einwohnerkontrolle) if you are leaving permanently.
What does an international relocation involving Switzerland typically include?
Whether your move starts or ends in Switzerland, we take care of packing, loading, logistics planning, customs documentation and the final unload — with friendly updates throughout the journey.
What are the most common destinations from Switzerland?
Popular routes include France, Germany, Italy, Austria, the Netherlands and the UK. Long-distance relocations also frequently go to the USA, Canada and Asia.
How long does an international move to or from Switzerland take?
European road moves: 2–7 days. Examples: Zürich → Munich 4–5h drive, Geneva → Paris 1–2 days, Basel → Frankfurt 3–4 days truck. Overseas: 3–6 weeks by sea container, 7–10 days by air freight for urgent loads.
Do I need customs documents for my relocation?
Yes. Switzerland is outside the EU customs union (Schengen since 12 Dec 2008 only — bilateral agreements, not customs union). Every cross-border move needs a T1 transit document, a detailed inventory and a customs import declaration at destination. We prepare and file the paperwork with Swiss Customs and at destination on your behalf.
Can I import my household goods to Switzerland without paying duties?
Yes. If you are moving to Switzerland permanently, personal household goods you have owned and used for at least 6 months may be imported duty-free under Swiss Übersiedlungsgut / déménagement rules. The declaration (Form 18.44) is filed with Swiss Customs at the border. Cars, motorcycles, alcohol and tobacco are subject to separate rules.
Are there restricted or regulated items when entering Switzerland?
Yes. Switzerland regulates the import of weapons, alcohol, large quantities of food, plants and some electronics. We provide clear instructions based on what you plan to bring.
Do I need to register my stay in Switzerland?
Yes. New residents must register in person with their local Einwohnerkontrolle / Contrôle des habitants (commune residents’ office) within 14 days of arrival. Non-EU/EFTA citizens need a residence permit from the State Secretariat for Migration (SEM) before arrival; EU/EFTA citizens can apply on arrival. You will then receive a Swiss residence permit (B, C or L) and register for tax (federal ESTV plus cantonal/communal tax) and mandatory health insurance within 3 months.
Does Flyto offer local moving support inside Switzerland?
Yes. Through trusted partners, we arrange local moves in Zürich, Geneva, Basel, Lausanne, Bern and surrounding regions.
Do you deliver everywhere in Switzerland, including mountain regions?
Absolutely. We deliver nationwide — from major cities to Alpine villages, remote valleys and border areas.
Should I take additional moving insurance for Switzerland?
We recommend extra coverage for high-value or fragile items, especially due to international transport and customs handling. We can help arrange insurance if needed.
