What should I know when moving to Finland?
Finland joined the EU in 1995 and the Schengen Area in 2001. The standard VAT rate is 25.5%. Public health insurance is mandatory — most residents are covered by Kela. Major banks: OP, Nordea, Danske Bank, S-Pankki. Many expats arrive for tech, biotech or research roles in Helsinki, Espoo or Tampere.
How does a move from Finland to another country usually work?
Moves leaving Finland involve a detailed inventory, route planning, and — for non-EU destinations like the UK, Switzerland, USA or Canada — a T1 transit document plus an import declaration at destination. EU moves need no customs forms. We file your final Vero (Tax Administration) notification of departure if you’re relocating permanently.

Do I need customs paperwork for my move?
EU-to-EU moves don’t need customs forms. Non-EU destinations (UK, Switzerland, Norway, USA, Canada) need a T1 transit document, a detailed English-language inventory and a customs import declaration at destination. For personal-effects duty relief, proof of residence change is also required.
Can I bring my belongings to Finland without paying customs duties?
From any EU country: yes, free movement applies. From outside the EU: personal household goods imported within 12 months of changing residence to Finland are duty-free under EU Regulation 1186/2009, provided you have owned them for at least 6 months and they are for personal use.
Are there items I cannot bring into Finland?
Yes. Restrictions apply to weapons, large amounts of alcohol, certain plants and specific electronic equipment. We provide clear guidance on what’s allowed.
Do I need to register when moving to Finland?
Yes. EU/EEA citizens register their stay with the DVV (Digital and Population Data Services Agency) within a reasonable time after arrival. Non-EU citizens need a residence permit from Migri (Finnish Immigration Service) first, then register with DVV. We prepare the documents and book appointments.
