What should I know before relocating to Italy?

Italy is a founding EU member (1957) and joined the Schengen Area on 26 October 1997. The standard VAT (IVA) rate is 22%. Rome (~2.85M) is the capital; Milan (~1.40M) is the financial and fashion hub; Naples and Turin are major southern and northern centres. Public administration runs through the comuni and the Polizia di Stato. Major banks: Intesa Sanpaolo, UniCredit, Banco BPM.

How does a move from Italy to another country typically work?

Moves leaving Italy involve a detailed inventory, route planning, and — for non-EU destinations like the UK, Switzerland, USA or Canada — a T1 transit document plus an import declaration at destination. EU moves need no customs forms. We can also notify Agenzia delle Entrate of your departure and handle the AIRE registration with your local Italian consulate abroad.

What does an international relocation involving Italy usually include?

Whether the relocation begins or ends in Italy, we take care of packing, loading, customs documents, international transport and home delivery — keeping everything organised and stress-free.

What are the most common destinations from Italy?

Popular routes include Italy–Germany, Italy–France, Italy–Switzerland, Italy–Austria, Italy–Spain and Italy–Netherlands. Long-distance moves often go to the USA, Canada and the UK.

How long does an international move to or from Italy take?

European road moves: 2–7 days. Examples: Milan → Munich ~7h truck, Rome → Vienna ~12h, Turin → Paris ~9h. Overseas: 3–6 weeks by sea container from the ports of Genoa, La Spezia or Gioia Tauro, 7–10 days by air freight from Malpensa or Fiumicino for urgent loads.

Do I need customs documents for an international move?

EU-to-EU moves don’t need customs forms. Non-EU destinations (UK, Switzerland, Norway, USA, Canada) need a T1 transit document, a detailed English-language inventory and a customs import declaration at destination. For personal-effects duty relief, proof of residence change is also required.

Can I bring my belongings to Italy duty-free?

From any EU country: yes, free movement applies. From outside the EU: personal household goods imported within 12 months of changing residence to Italy are duty-free under EU Regulation 1186/2009, provided you have owned them for at least 6 months and they are for personal use.

Are there restricted or controlled items when entering Italy?

Yes. Italy restricts weapons, alcohol, certain foods, plants and specific electronics. We provide clear guidance based on what you plan to bring.

Do I need to register when moving to Italy?

Yes. New residents must register with the local Anagrafe (civil register) of their comune within 20 days of arrival — see poliziadistato.it. Non-EU citizens first need a permesso di soggiorno from the Questura and the Sportello Unico per l’Immigrazione. Health coverage is via the SSN (Servizio Sanitario Nazionale); tax matters via Agenzia delle Entrate.

Does Flyto offer local moving help inside Italy?

Yes. Through our trusted partner network, we offer assistance for local relocations in Rome, Milan, Florence, Turin, Naples, Bologna and other regions.

Do you deliver everywhere in Italy, including rural or remote areas?

Absolutely. We deliver nationwide — from large cities to small villages, coastal areas and mountain regions.

Should I consider taking additional insurance for my move?

Extra coverage is recommended for valuable or fragile items, especially for long-distance international journeys. We can arrange suitable insurance.
