Moving Back to the UK from Spain
Returning to Britain after years in Spain is rarely a simple reversal of the move that took you south. The route is the same roads through France, but the paperwork is not the same paperwork. Since Brexit, a household move from Spain to the UK is no longer an intra-EU movement of goods: it needs export formalities on the Spanish side and import formalities on the British side, even though your belongings never leave the road. Get that part organised early and the move is straightforward. Leave it until the lorry is near Calais and it becomes the most expensive mistake on this route.
Flyto Relocation has been running European household moves since 2018. We operate our own hubs across Northern, Central and Southern Europe, and Spain sits inside our Southern-Europe operating area, so we control the collection side of this move directly. UK delivery runs through the same hub network with vetted partner crews we work with repeatedly. We do not have a British office and we will not pretend otherwise, but we do have a settled way of running this corridor.
Who this page is for
Most people we move on this route fall into one of three groups. British retirees returning after a decade or more on the Costa del Sol, the Costa Blanca or around Alicante, often after selling a villa or apartment. Families going home for schooling, work or to be closer to ageing parents. And people returning for healthcare reasons, where the timeline is set by something other than convenience. Each group has a different pressure point, but all three face the same customs reality.
The post-Brexit customs reality, and why ToR timing matters
Because Spain is outside the UK customs territory, your household goods are treated as an import. Returning UK residents can usually apply for Transfer of Residence (ToR) relief, which, where granted, allows used personal belongings to enter free of import duty and VAT. It is an application, not an automatic entitlement, and it is the single item on this move that should be started first.
The ToR reference should be in hand before the goods arrive in the UK. Applications are not instant, and a consignment that reaches the border without a valid reference can sit in a bonded facility accruing storage and demurrage while the paperwork catches up, or face duty and VAT that relief would have covered. Conditions typically include a qualifying period of residence outside the UK, prior ownership and use of the goods before the move, and a restriction on selling or disposing of them for a period after import. Alcohol and tobacco are not covered by ToR relief and are handled separately, if at all.
Treat all of the above as conditional and confirm the current rules and processing times directly with HMRC before you commit to dates. Rules change, and your circumstances decide whether you qualify.
Groupage or a dedicated vehicle
This is a road move through France, and there are two sensible ways to do it.
| Groupage (shared load) | Dedicated vehicle | |
|---|---|---|
| Best for | Part-loads, flexible dates | Full homes, fixed dates |
| Typical door-to-door | Around one to two weeks | A matter of days |
| Cost basis | Volume you actually use | The whole vehicle |
| Date control | Departure window | Agreed collection and delivery |

Groupage shares a trailer with other consignments heading the same way, so you pay for your volume rather than the lorry, and the trade-off is a departure window rather than a date. A dedicated vehicle collects your home and drives it to yours, which is faster and far easier to plan around a completion date, and costs more. Transit times above are indicative: season, border processing and delivery access all move them.
Access on the Spanish coast
Coastal urbanisations, gated communities and old-town streets in Andalusia and Valencia frequently cannot take an articulated lorry. In practice that means a shuttle: a smaller vehicle loads at your door and transfers to the main trailer at an accessible point. It is normal, it is planned for, and it is not free, so it needs to be identified at survey rather than discovered on loading day. Narrow access, lift restrictions, height barriers in resort car parks and permit requirements for street parking are all worth flagging early. The same question applies at the UK end, where terraced streets and rural lanes cause their own problems.
Documents to have ready
- Passport and evidence of your return to the UK
- Proof of residence in Spain for the qualifying period (padrón, NIE, tax records)
- Evidence of a UK address, such as a tenancy agreement or completion paperwork
- Your ToR reference, obtained before the goods arrive
- A detailed, valued inventory of everything being shipped
- Separate documentation for any vehicle or pet travelling
Storage and timing
Property sales rarely align neatly with property purchases, and on this route the gap usually falls on the UK side. If your Spanish sale completes before you have keys in Britain, storage bridges it — either near the departure hub or on arrival. Build it into the plan rather than treating it as a failure; a few weeks of storage is cheaper and calmer than a rushed completion.
Seasonality matters here more than people expect. The return flow from the Costa del Sol, the Costa Blanca and Alicante peaks predictably, and capacity in those windows goes early. Booking well ahead is the cheapest thing you can do on this move.
What drives the cost
Volume is the main driver, followed by service type, access at both ends, distance from the main corridor, packing scope, storage and season. Published market ranges for Spain-to-UK household moves vary widely and any figure quoted without a survey is a guess; a video or in-person survey is what turns an estimate into a price you can rely on. We do not publish fixed prices for this route because the honest answer depends on your home.
Insurance
Standard carrier liability is limited and is not the same as insurance. Marine or transit cover based on your declared inventory values is what actually protects a household. Read what is excluded — commonly owner-packed cartons, and items of unusual value that were not declared — and value the inventory properly rather than optimistically.
Pets and vehicles
Neither travels with your furniture. Pets returning to the UK follow their own health, microchip and documentation requirements with approved routes and carriers, and vehicles are a separate import with their own customs treatment and registration steps. Both need their own timeline, started well before moving week.
How Flyto coordinates the move
We survey, quote against a real inventory, plan the shuttle if the access needs one, handle the export formalities in Spain, run the road leg through our hub network, and coordinate the UK delivery crew and any storage. You get one point of contact rather than a chain of subcontractors, and clear guidance on where your ToR application sits in the sequence — though the application itself remains yours to make with HMRC.
If you are planning a return from Spain, the best time to start is before your completion date is fixed. Get a tailored quote and timeline from our relocation advisor and we will map the route, the paperwork and the dates around your move.
