Customs and paperwork for Denmark
The paperwork depends entirely on where you are moving from.
Moving from within the EU. If your goods are already in free circulation in another EU country, they move freely into Denmark. There is no customs duty, no VAT and no import declaration on your personal household effects. This is the simple case, and it covers most of our European routes.
Moving from the UK or another non-EU country. Since Brexit, a move from the UK is a non-EU import and must clear Danish customs (Toldstyrelsen). The good news is that Denmark offers transfer-of-residence relief on flyttegods (moving goods): if you are moving your normal place of residence to Denmark, you can usually bring your used personal belongings free of duty and VAT. To qualify you must have lived outside the EU for at least 12 consecutive months, have owned and used the items for at least six months, and intend to keep using them. The goods should arrive no earlier than six months before, and no later than 12 months after, you move. You submit a declaration of personal property to Toldstyrelsen with a detailed inventory. Alcohol, tobacco, commercial vehicles and professional trade equipment are excluded from the relief. We prepare the inventory and guide you through the declaration.
Registering yourself in Denmark. Alongside the goods, you register as a resident. Everyone living in Denmark for more than three months needs a CPR number (the central person register number used for tax, health care and almost everything else). You obtain it once you have a Danish address, either at your local kommune’s Borgerservice or, in the larger cities, through the International Citizen Service, with International House Copenhagen serving the capital region. EU and EEA citizens first apply for an EU residence document (registration certificate) from SIRI, which confirms your right to live in Denmark, before completing CPR registration at the municipality.
