The Algarve is a day further from the Channel than Lisbon, which is why it costs a little more. Part loads share a vehicle with other households and run from Portugal to the UK several times a month; a dedicated vehicle ships when you want and delivers on a fixed date. Prices include the Channel crossing and UK customs entry; they exclude storage if your UK property is not ready and any parking suspension in London or other city centres.
UK customs: Transfer of Residence (ToR1)
Household goods you have owned and used for at least six months are relieved from UK import duty and VAT when you move your normal home to the UK – but only if you apply for Transfer of Residence relief (form ToR1) with HMRC before the goods travel and receive a unique reference number. The application needs proof that you have lived outside the UK for at least 12 months (Portuguese residence certificate, NIF, rental or property documents, utility bills), proof of your UK address and an inventory. Without the ToR number at the border, your own sofa is charged duty and 20 % VAT on its assessed value.
ToR takes HMRC two to four weeks to process. We do not load until the number exists. Goods must arrive within 12 months of your return and cannot be sold for 12 months. Alcohol from the Algarve wine rack, new items and anything commercial are outside the relief and taxed.
What to sort in Portugal before you leave
Cancel your Portuguese residence (Câmara or AIMA), notify Finanças that you are no longer tax resident and settle any IMI or IRS obligations, close or convert your Portuguese bank account after the last bills, and – if you sold a property – note that Portuguese capital gains tax applies to non-residents. Cars: a Portuguese-registered left-hand-drive car can be imported to the UK duty-free under ToR if owned six months, but must pass an IVA test and be registered with DVLA; most people sell it in Portugal. Pets need an animal health certificate from a Portuguese vet, microchip, rabies vaccination and tapeworm treatment for dogs.
What to sort in the UK before the truck arrives
Register with a GP, re-register to vote, tell HMRC you are back (you become UK tax resident from the day of arrival under the split-year rules), and check your National Insurance record if you have been away for years.
