Moving to Dubai from the UK is rarely a straight lift-and-shift of a British home. Most people arriving in the UAE are landing into a rental market where villas and apartments are frequently let furnished or part-furnished, on a residence visa that dictates when their belongings can legally clear customs, and into a climate and lifestyle that quietly makes a third of a typical UK household redundant. The removal itself is the easy part. Sequencing it correctly is what saves money and stress.

Flyto Relocation is a European relocation company, established in 2018, with our own hubs across Northern, Central and Southern Europe. UK collections are handled by vetted partner crews working through that hub network, and the UAE side by vetted partner agents who handle clearance and delivery in Dubai. We do not operate a UK or UAE office, and we do not own ships or aircraft — we arrange sea and air freight through established carriers and manage the process end to end on your behalf. That distinction matters, because it means our advice on what to ship is not driven by filling a container.

Who this guide is for

Three groups make up the bulk of UK-to-Dubai moves, and each has a different optimal answer:

  • Professionals on an employer package. Often relocating at short notice with a shipping allowance, sometimes capped by volume or value. The priority is getting the visa and shipment timelines to line up so you are not paying for storage at both ends.
  • Families relocating together. School terms, pets, and children’s belongings drive the timetable. Sea freight usually makes sense for the bulk, with a small air consignment for essentials.
  • People downsizing from a UK house into a Dubai apartment. This is the group most likely to over-ship. A four-bedroom UK house does not fit a two-bedroom Dubai apartment, and much of what does fit is not worth the freight cost.

Start with the visa, not the removal quote

This is the single most important point on this page. A UAE residence visa — usually sponsored by your employer — is normally the practical prerequisite for clearing a household shipment in your own name. In other words, your goods can be at Jebel Ali, fully paid for, and still not be releasable to you until your residency status is in place.

The practical consequence is that you should plan the shipment backwards from the expected visa date, not forwards from your UK move-out date. If your visa is likely to take several weeks after arrival, a sea shipment despatched at the right moment can arrive almost exactly when you are ready to receive it. Despatch too early and you risk demurrage and storage charges at destination; too late and you are living out of suitcases in temporary accommodation. Confirm your specific position with your employer’s PRO and with the shipper before booking.

Sea freight or air freight?

Sea freight is the default for household goods. As a general guide, UK to Jebel Ali runs roughly four to six weeks port to port, before you add UK collection, export handling, UAE clearance and final delivery — so a realistic door-to-door window is longer than the sailing figure alone suggests. Sea is priced largely by volume, which is why it suits furniture, boxed effects and anything bulky but not urgent.

Air freight is dramatically quicker but priced by weight, which changes the calculus entirely. It is the right tool for a small consignment of genuine essentials — work equipment, a few weeks of clothing, children’s comfort items, important documents — rather than for a household. A common and sensible pattern is a modest air shipment plus a sea shipment following behind.

Factor Sea freight Air freight
Typical transit Around 4–6 weeks port to port Days rather than weeks
Priced by Volume (m³ or container) Chargeable weight
Best for Furniture, boxed household effects Essentials, urgent items, work kit
Main destination gateway Jebel Ali Dubai airport cargo terminals
Watch out for Arriving before your visa is ready Weight escalating cost quickly

UAE customs and restricted goods

UAE import duty is generally around 5% of CIF value, though personal effects belonging to a new resident are often relieved from duty subject to conditions being met. Treat relief as something to be confirmed for your shipment rather than assumed — the conditions turn on your residency status, documentation and the nature of the goods.

Certain categories are strictly controlled or prohibited, and this is where UK households most often trip up:

  • Alcohol — tightly restricted. Do not pack it in a household shipment.
  • Medicines — some common UK prescription and over-the-counter drugs are controlled substances in the UAE. Check before packing, and carry documentation for anything you genuinely need.
  • Pork products — not permitted in a household consignment.
  • Religiously or politically sensitive material — including printed matter, artwork and media.

Shipments are subject to inspection, and a single problem item can delay an entire consignment. Verify current requirements with UAE customs and with the shipper before packing, as rules and enforcement can change.

What genuinely isn’t worth shipping

Because so much Dubai property comes furnished or part-furnished, shipping a complete UK household is frequently the wrong call. Review your inventory honestly and be ruthless. Items that rarely justify the freight include heavy flat-pack furniture, mattresses and divans, bulky wardrobes, garden equipment, winter coats and thick outerwear, and gas appliances or anything with a UK-specific installation. Large white goods are often supplied with the property. Anything you would not pay to replace at roughly its freight cost should probably be sold, donated or left behind.

What is usually worth taking: quality furniture with genuine value or sentiment, children’s items, books and personal effects, artwork (subject to the sensitivity rules above), and good-quality electronics — though note the UK-to-UAE plug standard is broadly compatible, which spares one common headache.

What drives the cost

We do not publish fixed prices for this route, because an honest figure depends on your specific shipment. The variables that move the number most are volume shipped, whether you take a dedicated container or share groupage space, your UK postcode and access conditions (narrow streets, upper floors without a lift, parking restrictions), packing scope, destination access in Dubai, insurance value, and whether storage is needed at either end. Market ranges quoted online assume ideal access and straightforward clearance, so a survey-based quote is worth far more.

Insurance and storage

Marine transit insurance is priced against a declared value, so an accurate itemised valuation is worth the hour it takes. Under-declaring to shave the premium leaves you exposed on exactly the high-value items you would most want covered. Storage is the other common line item — either in the UK while your visa progresses, or in Dubai if the shipment lands before you have keys. Planning for it deliberately is cheaper than discovering it as a surprise charge at the port.

How Flyto coordinates the move

We plan the move around your visa timeline first. From there we arrange a UK survey and collection through vetted partner crews operating within our European hub network, handle export documentation, book the sea or air freight with established carriers, and hand over to vetted partner agents in the UAE who manage clearance at Jebel Ali or the airport and final delivery to your Dubai address. You deal with one coordinator throughout rather than a chain of separate companies, and we will tell you plainly when part of your inventory is not worth shipping.
