Moving abroad from India is a long-distance, long-duration move in every sense: your shipment spends weeks at sea, crosses two customs regimes and arrives in a very different climate. Flyto Relocation, a European relocation company established in 2018, coordinates international removals from India for professionals, families, returning expatriates, students and researchers heading to Europe, the UK, North America and the Gulf.
Who this service is for
We work with people leaving Mumbai, Delhi NCR, Bangalore, Hyderabad, Pune and Chennai: a job transfer to Europe or the UK; a family relocation where the household contents matter more than the speed; a researcher or postgraduate moving with books, instruments and a little furniture; or an expatriate returning home after a posting in India. The question is always the same — how do we get household goods from an Indian address to a foreign address, legally, intact and at a sensible cost?
The honest origin and destination split
You should know exactly who does what before you commit. Flyto does not have an office in India and we will not pretend otherwise. The survey, packing, crating, local transport and Indian export formalities are handled by vetted Indian partner agents whom we brief and hold to our service standard. Flyto arranges the sea or air freight through freight partners; we do not own ships or aircraft.
Where we are genuinely strong is the other end. Flyto operates its own hubs in Northern, Central and Southern Europe, so for a European destination the arrival, customs coordination, warehousing, final delivery and unpacking are handled by our own people rather than a sub-contracted stranger. That is the practical reason to use us: the half of the move that usually goes wrong is the half we run ourselves. For North America and the Gulf we coordinate vetted destination agents and manage the file from Europe.
Sea freight or air freight
Almost every household move from India goes by sea. Sea freight is priced by volume and is the only sensible option for furniture, appliances and a full household. Air freight is priced by weight and is far quicker, which makes it right for a small, urgent consignment: work equipment, a child’s essentials, or what you need in the first fortnight. Many clients do both — a small air consignment to live from, and a sea shipment for everything else.
Within sea freight you can take a full container (typically a 20ft or 40ft unit, loaded at your address) or share container space as groupage. Groupage is cheaper for smaller volumes but adds consolidation time at both ends.
Ports and transit times
Indian household goods usually leave through Nhava Sheva (JNPT) near Mumbai, Chennai, Mundra or Kolkata, depending on your origin city and the sailing schedule. As a general guide, and subject to carrier schedules, transhipment and port congestion, sea transit from India to Northern Europe is commonly around four to six weeks port to port; sailings to North America’s west coast take longer. Add time at both ends for packing, inland haulage, consolidation, clearance and final delivery — a realistic door-to-door plan for a European destination is often two to three months. Air freight moves in days rather than weeks, plus clearance.

Export documentation from India
Indian export of used household goods requires a detailed, valued inventory listing every carton and item, plus the standard export documentation. Your origin agent prepares and files this, but you must supply accurate identity and travel documents, your destination visa or residence permit, and honest values. Understating values or omitting items is the most common cause of delay and inspection. Rules change; confirm current requirements with Indian customs through your origin agent before packing day.
Relief from duty at the destination
Most European countries and the UK offer transfer-of-residence style relief on used personal effects, meaning your own household goods may be imported without duty and import VAT if conditions are met. Conditions typically concern how long you owned and used the goods, how long you lived outside the destination country, that you are genuinely transferring residence, and that the goods are not sold or lent for a set period. Treat this as conditional, never automatic, and confirm the position with the destination authority.
The UK route is worth flagging specifically: it uses Transfer of Residence (ToR) relief, and the application should be made and the reference obtained before the shipment arrives. A shipment landing without a ToR reference can sit accruing storage while the paperwork catches up, so we build that deadline into the plan. New items, alcohol, tobacco and vehicles are generally treated separately and may attract duty.
Packing for a long, humid transit
This is where an India-origin move differs most from a European one. Your goods may sit in a steel container through monsoon humidity, tropical heat and then a cold European winter. Packing quality matters more than usual, and cheap packing is a false economy.
- Wooden furniture — vulnerable to swelling, splitting and mould; needs proper wrapping and, for high-value pieces, crating.
- Leather and upholstery — mould-prone; must be breathable-wrapped rather than sealed in plastic.
- Electronics — condensation risk; original boxes where possible, otherwise double-walled cartons and moisture absorbers.
- Textiles and paper — books, documents and clothing need dry, well-sealed cartons; damp cartons collapse.
- Crating — any wooden packaging or crate must use ISPM-15 treated wood, which is a hard requirement for import, not a preference.
On appliances, voltage decides for you. India runs 230V/50Hz, which matches Europe and the UK, so appliances can usually travel and be used. North America runs 110V/60Hz, so most Indian appliances will not work there without a transformer and are rarely worth the freight. Check whether replacement costs less than shipping before you fill a container with white goods.
What drives the cost
We do not publish fixed prices for India, because an honest number depends on your shipment. The main drivers are volume, the origin city and inland distance to the port, whether you take a full or shared container, sea versus air, the destination country and final-mile distance, access at both addresses (stairs, lifts, long carries), the packing and crating required, insurance cover, and any storage. Market rates also move with fuel and shipping capacity. A survey, in person or by video, turns those variables into a firm quotation.
Insurance and storage
Carrier liability on international freight is limited and is not the same thing as insurance. We strongly recommend all-risk marine transit cover based on a declared valued inventory — another reason to value it accurately at the outset. Storage is often needed, because departure dates and destination housing rarely align; we can hold goods at origin or in our own European facilities until your new home is ready.
