Romania sits at one of Europe’s busiest crossroads for people on the move. Hundreds of thousands of Romanians live and work in Italy, Spain, Germany and the United Kingdom, and a steady flow of them return home each year. At the same time, Bucharest and Cluj-Napoca have become genuine European technology centres, drawing in engineers and expatriate families — and sending just as many out on international assignments. Whichever direction you are heading, an international removal from Romania is a logistics project with a deadline, and it deserves to be run like one.

How the process works
Every move follows the same spine, whether it is 900 km to Milan or a container to Toronto.
- Survey and volume. We estimate volume in cubic metres from a video walkthrough or a room-by-room inventory. Volume is the biggest driver of cost, so it is worth ten careful minutes.
- Written quotation. A fixed scope in writing: what is packed, what is carried, what is charged as an extra and under what conditions.
- Packing and collection. Furniture dismantled and protected; an inventory produced and signed.
- Line haul. Road to European destinations, or road pre-carriage to a port for sea and air.
- Customs, where applicable. None within the EU. Full export and import formalities outside it.
- Delivery and reassembly. Beds rebuilt, wardrobes reassembled, packing debris removed on request.
Transport modes by destination
Romania is well served by westbound road corridors — through Hungary and Austria towards Germany and the Benelux countries, or south-west via Serbia and Croatia towards Italy, France and Spain. The distances are long but the roads are predictable, and for almost every EU destination road transport is both the fastest and the cheapest option.
Dedicated road transport assigns a vehicle to your consignment alone, with collection and delivery dates you choose — best for full households and tight schedules. Groupage shares vehicle space with other consignments on the same corridor: markedly cheaper for part loads, at the cost of a delivery window rather than a fixed date.
Sea freight handles overseas volume. Constanța on the Black Sea is Romania’s principal seaport and the natural gateway for many intercontinental routings. Depending on destination and sailing schedule, however, it is sometimes faster or cheaper to move goods by road to an Adriatic port such as Koper or Trieste, or to a North Sea port such as Rotterdam or Hamburg, and load there. Air freight is the option for urgent or high-value shipments — days rather than weeks, at a price driven by chargeable weight.

Customs: the EU line matters
Romania is a member of the European Union, so a move to Italy, Spain, Germany, France, the Netherlands or any other member state involves no customs clearance at all. Your belongings travel inside the single market: no duty, no import declaration, no clearance delay — only the transport itself.
Moves outside the EU are a different exercise. The UK, Switzerland, Norway, Serbia, Moldova, Turkey, the United States, Canada, the UAE and Australia all require an export declaration from Romania and import clearance at the other end. Most offer duty relief on used personal effects for people genuinely transferring their residence, but the relief must be claimed correctly, with the right documents, within the right time limits — and each country writes its own rules. We prepare the export side and brief you on what the destination authority will want. Restricted categories such as alcohol, firearms, plants and anything motorised need declaring up front rather than being discovered in an inspection.
What actually drives the cost
- Volume. Cubic metres, first and last. A studio flat and a four-bedroom house are different projects.
- Distance and corridor. Bucharest to Vienna and Bucharest to Seville are not the same job.
- Dedicated versus groupage. Exclusive use of a vehicle buys speed and certainty, and costs accordingly.
- Access at both ends. Upper floors without a lift, narrow old-town streets, long carrying distances, restricted parking, or the need for an external lift. Blocks in Bucharest and hill streets in Brașov both produce these surcharges.
- Packing level and special items. Full professional pack versus fragile-only versus self-pack; pianos, safes, artwork, motorcycles.
- Timing. Late spring to early autumn is peak season across Europe; a flexible date is often worth real money.

Insurance, storage and hub coordination
Standard carrier liability in international road transport is set by weight, not value, so it rarely reflects what your possessions are actually worth. We recommend all-risk transit cover based on a valued inventory you complete yourself — an hour’s work, and the difference between a nominal payout and a real one.
Storage bridges the gap when lease dates do not line up, which on cross-border moves is often.
