International Removals from Turkey
Moving abroad from Turkey is a different exercise from moving within Europe. Turkey sits outside the EU customs territory for personal effects, so every household removal — by road through the Balkans or by sea from Ambarlı, Izmir or Mersin — needs full export and import declarations. Get that paperwork right and a move from Istanbul to Berlin, Rotterdam or Vienna is routine. Get it wrong and your goods sit at a bonded terminal accruing storage charges while a broker chases a missing inventory.

Who we move out of Turkey
Three groups make up most of our Turkish outbound volume, and each needs something different.
- Families joining the Turkish diaspora in Europe. Germany, the Netherlands, France, Austria and Belgium take the largest share — usually full-household moves, often into an upper-floor apartment with no lift.
- Expatriates leaving Istanbul. End-of-posting moves on a fixed date, usually part-loads, often with storage between handover of the flat and access to the new home.
- Retirees returning from the Antalya and Aegean coast. Long-term residents repatriating to Germany, the Netherlands or Scandinavia, with a mix of locally bought furniture and possessions brought from Europe years ago.
The customs reality: a customs union is not a removals exemption
Turkey and the EU share a customs union covering most industrial goods, which is why commercial trade flows with little friction. That arrangement does not extend to household removals and personal effects. A house move from Turkey to any EU country requires:
- a full export customs declaration in Turkey and a corresponding import declaration at destination;
- a detailed, valued inventory — box-by-box in English or the destination language, with a value on each line, not a one-line “household goods”;
- a customs broker at both ends, whose fees are a normal part of the cost;
- supporting documents: passport, residence permit or Turkish deregistration evidence, proof of the new address abroad, and usually a signed declaration that the goods are used personal effects accompanying a genuine change of residence.
The good news is that most EU destinations grant transfer-of-residence relief on used household goods for a genuine change of residence: no import duty or VAT on your own used effects. Relief is conditional — typically on having owned and used the items for a minimum period, on their arriving within a set window around your change of residence, and on not selling or lending them afterwards. Conditions vary by country and change over time, so confirm the detail with the customs authority of your destination country. New items still in their packaging, alcohol, tobacco, vehicles and firearms are treated separately and almost always attract duty or a separate procedure.
How we move goods out of Turkey
Three realistic modes; the right one depends on volume, destination and deadline.
Road and land corridors through the Balkans
For Central and Western Europe — Germany, Austria, the Netherlands, Belgium, France — road remains the workhorse. Vehicles run from Istanbul and Anatolia through Bulgaria and Serbia or Romania and Hungary into the Schengen area, sometimes with a short ferry leg. It is a long haul, but the corridor is well served, transit times are predictable, and road handles part-loads as easily as full loads. The goods still cross an external EU border, so they still clear customs.
Sea freight from Istanbul (Ambarlı), Izmir or Mersin
Sea freight suits overseas destinations, large volumes, and often Northern Europe where the road distance becomes punishing. Take a dedicated 20ft or 40ft container for a full house, or a groupage share alongside other consignments — cheaper, but slower, since the container waits for consolidation at origin and deconsolidation at destination.
Air freight for urgent part-loads
Air is expensive per cubic metre and rarely suits furniture, but it is right for a small, urgent shipment — the clothes, laptops and documents you need in week one while the main load is still moving. Many Turkish files combine both.

What drives the cost
We do not publish fixed prices for Turkey: a headline figure that ignores your building, your volume and your destination is worse than none. The variables that actually move the number are:
- Volume, measured in cubic metres after professional packing — the primary driver in every mode.
- Access at both ends: stair carries, narrow streets in older Istanbul or Izmir districts, restricted parking, and whether an external lift is needed.
- Packing scope: full professional pack versus owner-packed boxes, plus crating for artwork, marble, glass or pianos.
- Mode and routing: groupage sea is cheapest per cubic metre, a dedicated container fastest, air a multiple of both.
- Customs and brokerage at both ends, plus examination charges if a container is selected for inspection.
- Storage, if your dates do not line up.
As rough market orientation only: European road moves are commonly quoted in the low-to-mid four figures in euros for a modest apartment, and much higher for a large villa; sea groupage is priced per cubic metre with fixed port and clearance charges on top, so small shipments carry a high effective rate. Treat every published range, ours included, as indicative — the binding number is on a quotation written against your inventory and addresses.
Insurance, storage and how the file is coordinated
Standard carrier liability is limited by weight, not by what your possessions are worth, and will not make you whole after a serious incident. We recommend all-risk transit insurance on a declared replacement value, built on the same valued inventory customs requires. Photograph high-value items before packing.
Storage is common on Turkish files, usually at destination in one of our European hubs, where goods sit under the same file reference until your new home is available. Origin storage in Turkey is possible where a lease end forces your departure date.
Coordination is what the hub network buys you. Partner crews in Turkey pack and load to our specification and prepare the export file; our hub handles the European leg, customs, storage and final delivery with unpacking. You deal with one Flyto move manager throughout, in English — no gap between two companies each assuming the other has your paperwork.
