International Removals from Albania
Moving abroad from Albania is not a simple point-to-point transport job. It is a customs move, a ferry move and an access-planning exercise at once. Who we move out of Albania
Albania has one of Europe’s largest diasporas relative to its population, and the flow of household goods reflects it. Most moves we quote fall into four groups:
- Families joining relatives abroad — overwhelmingly Italy, Greece, Germany, the United Kingdom and Switzerland, where Albanian communities are decades established.
- Returning citizens shipping in the opposite direction after years away.
- Expatriates finishing postings in Tirana with energy companies, NGOs and embassies.
- Students and young professionals moving a part-load, where a groupage share beats a full container.
The customs reality: Albania is outside the EU
This is the most important fact about removals from Albania, and it catches people out constantly. Albania is not in the European Union or its customs union. So every move — including the short hop across the Adriatic to Bari or the drive south into Greece — requires an export declaration in Albania and an import declaration at destination, a detailed valued inventory (a numbered list with realistic values, not “1 x household goods”) and a customs broker at both ends, which we arrange as part of the move. There is no free-circulation shortcut for personal effects as there is between, say, Italy and Germany. Have your passport or ID, proof of the Albanian residence being given up and proof of the new one abroad ready.
The good news is that most EU destinations grant transfer-of-residence relief on used personal effects for a genuine change of residence. Typical conditions include a qualifying period of residence outside the destination country, prior ownership and use of the goods, importing within a set window after arrival, and not selling them for a period afterwards; new items, commercial quantities, alcohol, tobacco and vehicles are treated separately or excluded. Rules differ by country and change over time — always confirm the current requirements with the destination customs authority or your broker before you pack.
How your goods travel
Road and ferry via Durrës. Durrës is Albania’s main port and the natural gateway to Western Europe. Short-sea ferry links to Bari, Ancona and Trieste mean a truck loads at your door in Tirana, rolls off in Italy and continues by road to Germany, Switzerland, France or the UK. For most European destinations this is the fastest and best-protected option: your goods stay on one vehicle from origin to delivery.
Pure road via the Balkans. Routes through Montenegro, Kosovo or North Macedonia, and south into Greece, are used regularly — and for Central Europe when ferry space is tight. Each crossing adds formalities, so schedules carry more variance.
Deep-sea containers for overseas. Albania has no direct deep-sea liner services, so shipments to North America, Australia, the Gulf or Asia are trucked to an Italian or Greek transhipment port and loaded there — a full container (FCL) for a house, shared groupage (LCL) for a part-load.
Air freight from Tirana. The airport handles urgent part-loads well — the “first month” shipment that flies while the main consignment travels by road or sea. Expect a several-fold premium per kilo, so use it selectively.
Access and porterage: plan for it
Albanian housing stock creates real constraints. Older Tirana blocks and much coastal property have no lift, or a lift too small for a wardrobe; stairwells are narrow, older streets are tight, and a 13.6 m trailer often cannot reach the door. The answer is a shuttle vehicle running between your building and the main truck parked nearby, plus extra porters. Priced in the quote, this is a modest line item; discovered on loading day, it becomes a delay and a dispute. We ask about floor, lift and street width during the survey for this reason.
What drives the cost
- Volume — the main lever. A one-bedroom flat is roughly 12–18 m³; a three-bedroom home 35–50 m³. Decluttering before the survey is your cheapest saving.
- Service level — full packing, part packing, or you box up and we move the furniture.
- Route and mode — road plus ferry, pure road, deep-sea via transhipment, or air.
- Access at both ends — shuttles, stair carries, parking permits, restricted delivery windows.
- Customs complexity — brokerage, inspections, and any duty or VAT relief does not cover.
- Extras — dismantling and reassembly, crating, storage, insurance cover level.
Market pricing moves with fuel, ferry space and season, so we quote ranges rather than fixed figures. As broad orientation only: a small part-load to Italy or Greece typically lands in the low four figures in euros; a full family home to Germany, Switzerland or the UK sits meaningfully higher; a 20 ft container overseas is a step up again. Summer is peak — book early and pay less.

How the move runs
1. Survey and quote
A video survey works well from Albania — you walk the rooms on your phone and we build an accurate volume estimate and inventory, then issue an itemised quote with the customs and access items visible rather than buried in a lump sum.
2. Documents and booking
We confirm the route and dates, book ferry or vessel space, and prepare the inventory and customs paperwork with our brokers on both sides. You gather your documents; we tell you which and when.
3. Packing and loading
Vetted local crews pack to export standard — double-wall cartons, wardrobe and picture boxes, blankets for furniture, timber crates for the fragile — numbering everything against the inventory as it is loaded.
4. Transit, clearance and delivery
Your coordinator tracks the consignment and chases the brokers at both ends, with English-language updates at each milestone. At destination we place items in the rooms you nominate and reassemble what we dismantled.
Insurance, storage and hub coordination
Carrier liability under standard transport conventions is calculated by weight and sits far below the real value of household goods — it is not insurance. We recommend all-risks transit cover based on your declared replacement values, which is why the valued inventory matters twice over: it serves customs and sets your cover. Owner-packed boxes are typically covered for total loss only, so let our crew pack anything valuable.
