Overseas Removals to Spain
An overseas removal to Spain is a different animal from a European one. If your household goods leave the UK after Brexit, or the United States, Australia, South Africa, the Gulf or Latin America, they arrive as an import: a sea container discharged at a Spanish port, cleared against a valued inventory, and only then delivered to your address. That port and customs stage is where the time, the paperwork and most of the surprises live.
Plainly, up front: if you are moving from another EU country — Germany, the Netherlands, France, Finland, Poland — this is not the page you need. Intra-EU moves travel by road inside the single market: no import clearance, no port handling, no inventory valuation, and days rather than weeks. Overseas is the harder case, and the case this page covers.
Who this page is for
- British families relocating post-Brexit, with the UK now a third country for customs purposes.
- Americans, Canadians and Latin Americans shipping a full household to the Costa Blanca, Costa del Sol, Madrid, Barcelona or the Balearics.
- Australians, New Zealanders and South Africans facing the longest sea legs of all.
- Gulf-based expats closing out a posting and consolidating a home in Spain.
- Returning nationals and residents-to-be who may qualify for transfer-of-residence relief.
Sea container, road groupage or air freight
Three modes cover almost every overseas removal to Spain, and the right one is usually decided by volume and deadline rather than preference.
Full container load (FCL)
A 20ft or 40ft container dedicated to you. Sensible from roughly a two- or three-bedroom home upwards. Goods are loaded once at origin and not touched again until delivery — the lowest-handling, lowest-risk option — and you control the sailing date rather than waiting for a consolidation to fill.
Groupage / less than container load (LCL)
You share container space and pay for the cubic metres you use. Much cheaper for a flat or a partial household, but slower: the shipment waits for consolidation at origin and deconsolidation at a bonded warehouse in Spain, with extra handling at both ends. Note that “groupage” also describes shared road trailers within Europe — a different service, and the one most intra-EU movers use.
Air freight
Days rather than weeks, but priced by chargeable weight — realistically for a few boxes, professional equipment, or a bridging shipment of essentials while the container is at sea. Air arrivals still require import clearance.
Ports and realistic transit times
Spain’s principal container gateways are Valencia (the east coast, Madrid and the Costa Blanca), Barcelona (Catalonia and the north-east), Algeciras (a major transhipment hub serving Andalusia and the Costa del Sol) and Bilbao (northern Spain and Atlantic services). The port of entry is a routing decision made by the shipping line, but it strongly affects inland delivery cost.
| Origin | Typical mode | Indicative port-to-port sea transit |
|---|---|---|
| United Kingdom | FCL, LCL or road/ferry | Short — days; road often competitive |
| US East Coast | FCL or LCL | Roughly 3–5 weeks |
| US West Coast | FCL or LCL | Longer again, routing dependent |
| Gulf (UAE, Qatar) | FCL or LCL | Several weeks via Suez routings |
| Australia / New Zealand | FCL or LCL | Considerably longer — plan on months door to door |

These are sailing figures only. Add packing and collection at origin, the wait for a sailing, clearance in Spain and inland delivery: door-to-door totals run meaningfully longer, and LCL adds consolidation time at both ends. Treat any date as an estimate until the booking is confirmed.
Customs clearance and transfer-of-residence relief
Goods arriving from outside the EU customs territory must be formally imported. In principle, that means import duty and Spanish VAT — unless relief applies.
Spain does operate transfer-of-residence relief for used personal effects belonging to someone genuinely moving their normal residence to Spain, allowing import without duty and VAT. It is conditional, not automatic. Broadly, the authorities look for:
- Evidence you previously lived outside the EU for a qualifying continuous period;
- Evidence you are establishing residence in Spain, with the shipment imported within the permitted time window;
- Goods owned and used before the move — not newly purchased items;
- An undertaking not to sell or transfer them for a set period after import;
- A detailed inventory, plus identity and residence documentation.
Vehicles, alcohol and tobacco, firearms, plants, food and pets sit outside the relief and follow separate regimes. Rules, thresholds and time limits change. Confirm your position with the Spanish customs authority (Agencia Tributaria) or a gestor before you ship. Nothing here is a guarantee of relief.
The inventory is the document that matters
For an intra-EU road move a simple packing list is enough. For an import into Spain it is not. Customs expect a detailed, itemised, valued inventory — typically in Spanish or bilingual, with a realistic value against each line, signed by you. Vague entries such as “misc. boxes” invite questions, and questions mean the container sits while demurrage and storage charges accrue at the port. Getting the inventory right at origin is the single highest-leverage thing you can do to keep the move on schedule.
What drives the cost
- Volume — cubic metres for groupage, container size for FCL. Decluttering genuinely lowers the bill.
- Origin and routing — sea freight rates swing with fuel, capacity and canal routings.
- Port and destination charges — terminal handling, clearance fees, any inspection.
- Access at both ends — narrow old-town streets, no lift, a long carry, or a container that cannot reach the property and needs shuttling to a smaller vehicle.
- Packing scope — full export wrap and crating protects far better on a long sea leg than a self-pack, and costs more.
- Timing — the summer peak and holiday periods are tighter and dearer.
Published “average” prices are close to meaningless here: a one-bedroom LCL shipment from London and a 40ft container from Sydney are not the same product. Ask for a written quotation that separates origin services, freight, destination charges and exclusions — that is what makes offers comparable.
Insurance and storage
Standard carrier liability on international freight is limited and typically weight-based, which bears no relation to what your possessions are worth. Separate marine transit insurance based on your declared inventory values is the norm rather than a luxury. Read the exclusions — pairs and sets, mechanical or electrical derangement, self-packed cartons, and mould or condensation on long humid routes are common carve-outs.
Storage is often necessary rather than optional: completions slip, rental start dates do not line up with sailings, and containers do not wait. Storage can sit at origin before departure or in Spain after clearance, and short-term destination storage is usually cheaper than paying port demurrage.
How Flyto handles overseas removals to Spain
Flyto Relocation is a European relocation company, established in 2018, with its own hubs across Northern, Central and Southern Europe. Spain sits inside our Southern-Europe operating area, so the destination side — clearance coordination, port collection, inland transport, delivery, unpacking and storage — is our own ground.
For the origin side we work with vetted partner agents in the origin country: survey, export packing, inventory preparation and export formalities are handled locally by people who run that lane every week. Flyto arranges the sea or air freight through freight partners and shipping lines; we do not own ships. What we own is the coordination and the Spanish end — one point of contact, one plan, and no gap where a shipment goes quiet between two agents who have never spoken.
Two destination steps we flag early, because they affect both your clearance and your life in Spain: obtaining an NIE (foreigner identification number) and registering on the padrón at your local town hall. Start both sooner than feels necessary.
