International Removals from Hungary
Moving out of Hungary is rarely just a change of address. It is a job offer in Munich, a partner’s transfer to Dubai, or a family return to the Netherlands after six years in Budapest. Who we move out of Hungary
Budapest has one of the largest international communities in the region: shared-service and corporate-services staff, an established tech and gaming sector, automotive engineering across Győr and Kecskemét, and a long-settled expatriate population in Buda. Around that sits a steady flow of Hungarian families and returning citizens heading to Germany, Austria, the Netherlands, the Nordics, the UK and North America.
- Corporate and assignment moves — tied to a start date, often with a company allowance and an invoice that must reconcile line by line.
- Family relocations — a full flat or house, school timings, a car and a pet.
- Returning expatriates — partial households, with the rest sold, donated or stored.
- Students and single professionals — a few cubic metres, best served by groupage.
How the process works
- Survey and volume estimate. A video survey is usually enough. We measure in cubic metres, because volume — not weight — drives most European removal pricing.
- Written quotation. One document listing transport, packing, access conditions, customs handling and insurance options. If something is excluded, it says so.
- Booking and planning. Loading dates, lift or parking permits, building rules and delivery windows.
- Packing and loading. Full pack, fragile-only pack, or self-pack with materials supplied; export wrapping for anything travelling by sea.
- Transit and delivery. Road across the EU; road-plus-sea or air overseas. Then clearance where required, delivery into the correct rooms, reassembly and debris removal.
Transport modes: the landlocked factor
Hungary has no coastline, and that single fact shapes every overseas move: with no port of loading in the country, a sea shipment first travels by road to a seaport. We route through the Adriatic — Koper in Slovenia or Trieste in Italy, both within comfortable trucking distance of Budapest — or to the North Sea via Hamburg or Rotterdam when the sailing schedule or destination favours it. Adriatic ports usually win for the Middle East, Asia and Australia; North Sea ports for North America.
Within Europe, Hungary’s position is an advantage rather than a constraint. Motorway links to Austria, Slovakia, Slovenia, Croatia and Romania are good, and onward runs to Germany, the Benelux and the Nordics are routine. Most intra-EU removals move by road, either as a dedicated load or as groupage, where your goods share a trailer with other consignments on the same corridor. Air freight is the third option: fast, priced by chargeable weight, and expensive at household volumes — best kept for a small urgent consignment sent ahead of the main load.

What drives the cost
We do not publish fixed prices, because an honest number depends on your flat, not on an average. These are the variables that actually move a quotation:
- Volume. A studio might be 8–12 m³; a three-bedroom house with a cellar and garage can exceed 40 m³. Decluttering before the survey is the cheapest saving available.
- Distance, mode and vehicle. Budapest to Vienna is a different exercise from Budapest to Melbourne. Exclusive use of a vehicle costs more and delivers faster; groupage costs less and needs date flexibility.
- Access at both ends. Older Pest buildings often mean narrow stairwells, small courtyards, restricted loading zones and no lift. Parking permits and an external lift are chargeable, and cheaper planned than improvised.
- Packing and special items. A full pack adds labour and materials but is normally required for insurance to respond fully on breakables. Pianos, safes, artwork and vehicles need crating.
- Destination charges. Port fees, terminal handling, quarantine inspection (Australia and New Zealand in particular) and any duty are billed at destination.
- Season. Late June to early September is peak; booking early protects both price and date.
Market ranges circulate online, but treat them cautiously: they rarely state whether packing, insurance, port charges and customs are included. Ask for a written scope, then compare like with like.
Customs: EU versus non-EU
Hungary is a European Union member state, so a removal to Germany, Austria, Spain, Ireland or any other EU country is a customs-free movement within the single market: no import declaration, no duty on household goods. What matters instead is practical — an accurate inventory and correct delivery access.
Moving to a non-EU destination — the UK, Switzerland, Serbia, the United States, Canada, the UAE, Australia — changes the picture. The consignment leaves the EU customs territory, so export documentation is raised in Hungary or at the port of loading, and the destination requires an import declaration. Most countries offer relief from duty and VAT on used personal effects for someone taking up residence, subject to ownership, residence and filing conditions that differ by country and change over time. We confirm the current rules for your destination and list the documents to prepare — typically passport, visa or residence permit, proof of address, and a valued inventory. Restricted goods such as alcohol, firearms, plants and foodstuffs we flag before loading, not after.
Timelines
Allow four to six weeks between first enquiry and loading day in peak season, and two to three weeks off-peak. Once loaded, intra-EU deliveries typically land within a few days on a dedicated vehicle, or one to three weeks on groupage, where consolidation and multi-drop routing add time. Sea freight from Hungary usually runs four to ten weeks door to door; sailing frequency, port congestion and inspections all move that window, so we plan with a range rather than a single optimistic date.
Insurance and storage
Standard carrier liability is limited and calculated by weight, not value — it is not adequate cover for a household. We recommend all-risk marine transit insurance based on a valued inventory you complete yourself, and we say upfront where cover requires professional packing on fragile items. If your Budapest lease ends before the new home is ready, goods can be held in secure storage at origin, in transit or at destination, charged by volume and duration.
