International Removals from the Czech Republic
Leaving Prague for Munich, Brno for Dublin, or Ostrava for Toronto is a very different kind of move from a domestic one. The Czech Republic sits at the geographic centre of Europe with some of the continent’s best road connections — and it is also landlocked, which quietly reshapes every overseas shipment out of the country. Who moves abroad from Czechia
The customer profile here is unusually international. Prague hosts one of Central Europe’s largest expat and tech communities — shared service centres, software firms, EU-facing consultancies — and people rotate in and out on two-to-five-year cycles. Alongside them, Czech professionals and academics relocate to Germany, Austria, the Netherlands, the Nordics, the UK, North America and the Gulf. Families make up the third group: a full household, often with a car, a piano, garden equipment and years of accumulated belongings, moving from a house in the suburbs of Prague, Brno, Plzeň, Ostrava or Olomouc.
Each profile needs something different. A single professional leaving a Prague flat may need only a part-load of 8–15 m³ by road groupage. A family shipping a four-bedroom house to Australia is a container job with customs formalities, a port routing decision and a two-to-three-month horizon.
How the process works
- Volume survey. An inventory by room, done online with photos or by video call. Volume in cubic metres is the single biggest driver of price, so this step decides the whole quote.
- Route and mode selection. Road, sea or air, and for sea which port of loading — this is where a landlocked origin matters most.
- Written quotation. A fixed scope covering packing, loading, transport, customs where applicable, delivery and any storage.
- Packing and loading. Full pack, partial pack or self-pack; export-grade wrapping and materials for anything travelling by sea.
- Documentation. Inventory lists, and for non-EU destinations export declarations plus destination-side import paperwork.
- Transit and delivery. Tracking, destination clearance, delivery to the room of your choice, unpacking and debris removal on request.
Transport modes: why being landlocked matters
Within the EU, Czechia is close to ideal. The D5, D8, D1 and D2 motorway corridors feed straight into the German, Austrian, Polish and Slovak networks, so road transport is fast, frequent and competitively priced. Most Czech-origin European removals travel as either a dedicated truck or as groupage — your consignment sharing a trailer with other loads on a scheduled route. Groupage is materially cheaper and the trade-off is a delivery window rather than a fixed date.
Overseas is where the geography bites. The Czech Republic has no seaport, so every container shipment begins with a road leg — typically to Hamburg or Bremerhaven, sometimes Rotterdam or Antwerp for Atlantic sailings, and Koper or Trieste for routes heading through the Suez Canal to Asia, the Gulf and Oceania. A competent mover selects the port by sailing schedule and destination, not by habit; the wrong choice can add a fortnight of waiting for a vessel. Rail-to-port is occasionally used for cost reasons on non-urgent loads. From there you choose:
- Full container (FCL) — a 20ft or 40ft container to yourself, best value above roughly 25–30 m³ and the fastest option once loaded.
- Shared container (LCL) — you pay for the space you use, ideal for 5–20 m³, but consolidation and deconsolidation add weeks at both ends.
- Air freight — from Václav Havel Airport Prague or via a German gateway. Days rather than months, at several times the cost. Sensible for a 100–300 kg essentials shipment sent ahead of a sea consignment.
What drives the cost
We do not publish fixed prices, because an honest number depends on variables only a survey reveals. The factors that move a Czech-origin quote most are volume, distance and mode, access at both ends, the level of packing you want, and destination charges. Access is a genuine Czech-specific issue: Prague’s historic districts, Malá Strana and the older parts of Vinohrady and Žižkov, often mean narrow streets, restricted parking, no lift and stairwells that force a shuttle vehicle or an external lift. Panel-block flats in Ostrava and Brno usually have lifts but tight landings.
As broad market context rather than a quotation: European road moves out of Czechia commonly land in the low four figures of euros for a modest flat and rise from there with volume and distance; intercontinental sea moves usually run into the mid-to-high four figures and beyond for a full household, with air freight priced several times higher per cubic metre. Port congestion, fuel and freight-rate cycles all shift these ranges, so treat any number you see online — including ours — as an indication until a surveyed quote exists.
Customs: EU versus non-EU
The Czech Republic is an EU member state, so a removal to Germany, Austria, Slovakia, Poland, France, Spain, Ireland, the Netherlands or any other member state moves within the single market. There is no customs clearance, no import duty on your household goods and no formal declaration for personal effects — an inventory for insurance and driver documentation is enough. This is the main reason intra-EU moves from Czechia are quick and administratively light.
Non-EU destinations — the UK since Brexit, Switzerland, Norway, the USA, Canada, Australia, the UAE, Serbia — require a full export process from Czech customs and an import clearance on arrival. Expect to provide a valued inventory, passport copies, proof of residence transfer, and destination-specific forms (a ToR reference for the UK, form 3299 for the USA, quarantine declarations for Australia and New Zealand). Most countries grant duty relief on used personal effects owned and used for a qualifying period, typically six or twelve months, provided you are genuinely transferring residence. Alcohol, tobacco, firearms, plants, foodstuffs and anything with wooden packaging are treated separately and frequently cause the delays we see.

Insurance, storage and hub coordination
Carrier liability under CMR rules is calculated by weight and will not come close to replacing a damaged household. We recommend all-risk marine or transit cover based on a declared replacement value, with an itemised valuation for anything above the standard per-item threshold. Note the near-universal condition that owner-packed cartons are only covered against total loss, not internal damage — if the contents matter, let the crew pack them.
Timing rarely aligns perfectly. Origin storage in Czechia bridges the gap when your lease ends before the shipment departs; destination storage covers the far more common case of goods arriving before you have keys. Both are quoted monthly and should be agreed in advance rather than improvised.
