Island origins — the Cyclades, the Dodecanese, Crete, the Ionian islands and the rest — always add a ferry leg to bring your consignment to a mainland port or consolidation point before the international journey starts. This is entirely normal, but it does add a day or two and a modest cost, and it is worth booking with enough lead time during the busy summer season when ferry space is tight.
For destinations outside Europe, deep-sea containers (shared groupage or a dedicated 20ft/40ft box) are the standard, cost-effective choice. Air freight is available when speed matters or volumes are small, at a significant price premium.
Customs: EU versus non-EU
This is the single biggest factor that determines complexity. Greece is a full member of the European Union, so a move from Greece to another EU country stays inside the single market. A move to a non-EU destination is different.
