Jebel Ali has direct services to both US coasts, which is why the coast difference is smaller than from Europe. Inland destinations (Chicago, Dallas, Denver) add rail or trucking from the port. Prices exclude US customs exam fees if Customs and Border Protection selects your container (typically USD 300–1,500) and storage if your US address is not ready. US customs for household goods from the UAE
Used household goods and personal effects owned for at least one year enter the United States duty-free when you are moving there to live. You declare them on CBP Form 3299 with your passport, visa or Green Card and a detailed inventory; many ports also require a supplemental declaration and, for non-US citizens, proof of your intention to reside. The paperwork must be complete before the container arrives or it waits at your expense.
Alcohol is state-regulated and often not importable through a mover. New items, anything bought within the last year and goods for resale are dutiable. Wooden furniture and crates must be free of bark and pests (ISPM-15). Gold, jewellery and cash above USD 10,000 are declared separately. Cars must meet EPA and DOT standards – from the UAE this is rarely economic unless the car is US-spec or over 25 years old.
Leaving the UAE: what has to happen before the container ships
Your export shipment needs your Emirates ID or passport copy, a packing list and, for the UAE export declaration, either your residence visa cancellation or your employer’s letter. We book the collection to fit your visa-cancellation timeline so that the goods leave before your grace period ends. Furniture from serviced apartments or company-leased villas needs a no-objection letter from the landlord for the mover to load it.
Shipping from Dubai: the route
Collection and export packing at home in Dubai, Abu Dhabi or Sharjah, photographed inventory (which becomes your CBP 3299 list), export clearance at Jebel Ali or Khalifa Port, then the ocean leg to New York/Newark, Norfolk, Savannah, Houston, Los Angeles or Oakland. Customs clearance takes three to ten days; the destination partner then delivers, unpacks if booked and removes the packing material. Shared containers wait for consolidation and take one to two weeks longer than dedicated ones.

Packing for the crossing
A container from the Gulf spends five to nine weeks in heat and humidity before it reaches the American coast. Export packing – double-walled cartons, blankets and stretch wrap, corner protection, crates for glass, marble and artwork, desiccant where needed – is what stops mould, warping and breakage. Electronics travel in original or custom cartons; UAE appliances run on 230 V/50 Hz and most large appliances are not worth shipping to the 120 V US grid. Liquids, aerosols, batteries and gas cylinders are prohibited in sea freight.
