Shipping from Dubai to Canada 2026 – moving household goods from the UAE to Canada
Shipping from Dubai to Canada has grown into one of the busiest long-haul corridors out of the Emirates, driven by Express Entry, provincial nominee programmes and Canadian expats returning after a Gulf contract. Toronto and Vancouver take most of the moves, with Calgary, Montréal and Ottawa behind them. A move from the UAE to Canada is a sea-freight project with a generous customs regime – Canada’s settlers’ effects rules are among the simplest anywhere – but with a destination so wide that the city changes both price and transit time.
Flyto Relocation arranges door-to-door moves from Dubai, Abu Dhabi and Sharjah to Canada through vetted partner crews in the UAE, ocean freight contracted with established carriers, and destination partners from Halifax to Vancouver. We do not own ships and we do not claim an office in Dubai – we manage the freight, the paperwork at both ends and the delivery, and stay your single point of contact throughout.

Eastern Canada is served via Montréal or Halifax with rail to Toronto; Vancouver is reached directly across the Pacific via Singapore or Colombo, or by rail from the east. Prices exclude CBSA examination fees if your container is selected (typically CAD 200–1,000) and storage if your Canadian address is not ready. AED prices are quoted at the current rate on request.
Canadian customs: settlers’ effects
If you are moving to Canada to live for at least a year, your used household goods are duty- and tax-free as settlers’ effects, provided you owned, possessed and used them before arrival. You present two copies of an itemised inventory – the goods-to-follow list – to the Canada Border Services Agency when you first enter Canada, and CBSA stamps form BSF186. When the container arrives, the destination partner clears it against that form. If you fly to Canada before your goods ship, this stamped list is the single most important document in the move.
Alcohol and tobacco beyond the personal exemption are provincially taxed. Gold and jewellery are declared with proof of ownership. Vehicles must be admissible under Transport Canada rules – most Gulf-spec cars are not, so shipping a car from the UAE is rarely sensible. Untreated wood, plants, soil and most foods are prohibited.
Leaving the UAE: what has to happen first
Your export shipment needs your Emirates ID or passport copy, a packing list and, for the UAE export declaration, your residence visa cancellation or an employer letter. We book the collection to fit your visa timeline so that goods leave before the grace period ends. Furniture from company-leased or serviced accommodation needs the landlord’s no-objection letter before it can be loaded.
Shipping from Dubai: the route
Collection and export packing at home in Dubai, Abu Dhabi or Sharjah, photographed inventory (formatted as your goods-to-follow list), export clearance at Jebel Ali or Khalifa Port, then the ocean leg to Montréal, Halifax or Vancouver, with rail to Toronto, Ottawa, Calgary, Edmonton or Winnipeg as needed. Clearance takes three to ten days after arrival; the destination partner delivers, unpacks if booked and removes the packing material.
Booking window: 4–6 weeks before your preferred collection date for a dedicated container, 6–8 weeks for a shared container in the June–August peak. Winter deliveries to the Prairies can be delayed by rail conditions; we build that into the schedule.
Packing for the crossing and a Canadian winter
A container from the Gulf leaves 40 °C heat and may arrive in −25 °C. Export packing – double-walled cartons, blankets and stretch wrap, crates for glass and artwork, desiccant – protects furniture through six to ten weeks at sea and a cold rail leg. Liquids, houseplants and anything that cannot freeze stay behind. UAE appliances run on 230 V; Canada uses 120 V/60 Hz, so most large appliances are not worth shipping. Batteries, aerosols and gas cylinders are prohibited.

What if I fly to Canada before my container ships?
