The Norway customs point you must not overlook
This is the single most important thing to understand about moving abroad from Norway. Norway is not in the EU. It is a member of the EEA and Schengen, which means free movement of people, but it remains outside the EU customs union. In practice this means:
- An export declaration must be lodged with Norwegian customs (Tolletaten) when your goods leave the country.
- An import declaration and a detailed inventory are required at the destination, even when that destination is an EU member state.
- A move from Oslo to Berlin therefore carries more paperwork than an intra-EU move such as Berlin to Vienna would.
- Returning residents and people transferring their normal residence may be eligible for transfer-of-residence relief, which can reduce or remove import duty and VAT on used household effects. Eligibility rules are strict and vary by country, so this must always be confirmed with the relevant customs authority before shipping.

There is no honest single price for an international removal, because the variables are large. We do not quote fixed prices sight unseen. As a realistic market guide, a part-load move within Europe from Norway often falls in the region of a few thousand euros, a full household move within Europe can run into the mid-to-high thousands, and an overseas container move typically starts in the mid-thousands and rises with distance and volume. Timelines
European road-and-ferry moves usually complete within roughly one to three weeks door to door, depending on distance, groupage scheduling and clearance. Overseas sea freight typically takes several weeks to a couple of months, driven by sailing schedules, transit time and port clearance. Air freight compresses this to days at a higher cost. Insurance, storage and hub coordination
We strongly recommend comprehensive marine or transit insurance based on a declared, itemised inventory value rather than minimal default cover. Secure storage is available at origin, destination or an intermediate hub if your dates do not align, which is common when a property sale or new tenancy is still being finalised.
