Relocating from Denmark to Colombia means closing out your obligations with Danish authorities on one end and clearing customs and immigration in Colombia on the other. This guide is written for Danish residents — Danes and foreign residents alike — who are shipping a household to Colombia, whether for work, retirement, family, or a long-term stay. It covers the Danish export and deregistration side (Toldstyrelsen, CPR, SKAT), the Colombian import side (DIAN, Migración Colombia, ICA), realistic freight routing, pets, vehicles, and a short note on moving back the other way.

Key takeaways

  • Your Colombian immigration status and residence history decide your customs treatment: only people who prove at least 24 continuous or discontinuous months of residence abroad in the 3 years before arriving qualify to import household goods (menaje doméstico) under the simplified regime — see DIAN’s menaje doméstico page.
  • Before leaving Denmark for more than 6 months you must register as departed (udrejst) in the CPR with your last Danish municipality — see CPR.dk: Flytning til udlandet and borger.dk.
  • Your full Danish tax liability (fuld skattepligt) generally ends only once you no longer have a residence available to you in Denmark — the assessment is case-by-case, per SKAT’s C.F.1.2.3 guidance.
  • Goods leaving Denmark for a non-EU country such as Colombia must be declared through the customs authority’s DMS Eksport export-declaration system — see Toldstyrelsen’s export guide.
  • Colombian household-goods imports under the menaje doméstico regime (tariff heading 9805.00.00.00) pay a single 15% ad valorem tariff and require no import license, per DIAN’s ABC guide (PDF); goods must arrive between 1 month before and 4 months after you do.
  • Used vehicles cannot be imported into Colombia — including as part of a menaje doméstico shipment — under the Andean Automotive Complementation Agreement, which Colombia applies to imports from all countries, not just Andean partners, per DIAN’s official legal compilation.
  • Carrying more than USD 10,000 in cash or equivalent into or out of Colombia requires a mandatory declaration on Form 530, per DIAN.
  • Pets need a rabies vaccination at least 21 days before travel and a health certificate no older than 10 calendar days on arrival in Colombia — see Fødevarestyrelsen and ICA.

1. Your Colombian immigration status decides your customs treatment

Colombia’s customs benefit for incoming household goods is not automatic — it is tied to your visa category and your residence history. Colombia issues three broad visa families through the Ministry of Foreign Affairs (Cancillería): Visitor (V) for short, temporary stays that do not grant resident status; Migrant (M), which grants an open work permit and is the route for spouses of Colombians, workers, retirees/pensioners, investors and others who intend to settle but don’t yet qualify for an R visa; and Resident (R), for indefinite settlement, available after accumulated residence time, direct foreign investment, or family ties to a Colombian national (Cancillería: Tipos de Visa).

Crucially, the DIAN’s simplified menaje doméstico import regime — no import license, flat 15% duty — is only available to people who can document at least 24 continuous or discontinuous months living abroad within the 3 years immediately before arriving in Colombia to establish residence there (DIAN). A Danish resident on a short V visa doing a trial stay does not qualify for this regime and would instead need a standard commercial import if they wanted to bring furniture permanently. Confirm your visa category and residency timeline before booking your shipment, since it changes which customs process — and which tax rate — applies to your goods.

2. The Denmark export side: deregistering and closing out

Customs authority. Denmark’s customs and tax administration is split operationally between Toldstyrelsen (the Danish Customs Agency, which handles import/export declarations and controls) and Skattestyrelsen (the Danish Tax Agency), both under the Ministry of Taxation. For a move to a non-EU country like Colombia, goods must be declared for export through the DMS Eksport system that Toldstyrelsen operates; this is standard practice whether you or your moving company files the declaration (Toldstyrelsen: Kom i gang med at eksportere). There is no separate personal-effects export permit for household goods — used furniture and belongings leaving the EU are generally not subject to Danish export duty, but the shipment still needs a proper export declaration and, for commercial-style consignments, an EORI number.

Population registration (CPR). If you’re leaving Denmark for more than 6 months, Danish law requires you to report your departure (udrejst) in the CPR (Det Centrale Personregister) before you go, through your last Danish municipality (CPR.dk; borger.dk). You don’t need to already know your future Colombian address to file this — you can supply it later through self-service once you have one. Deregistration affects your access to Danish public healthcare (Sygesikringskort), municipal services, and your address of record for SKAT, so it should be one of the first administrative steps you take, not an afterthought.

Tax residency exit. Ending your CPR registration does not automatically end your Danish tax liability. SKAT applies an overall assessment of whether you have genuinely given up your Danish residence: full tax liability (fuld skattepligt) generally lapses once you no longer have control over a home available to you in Denmark, but retaining a property — even if rented out — can keep you fully liable unless the lease is irrevocable for at least 3 years and you are genuinely prevented from using the home during that period (SKAT: C.F.1.2.3). If your spouse or family stays behind in the shared home, SKAT will typically still treat you as tax-resident. Talk to SKAT or a tax advisor about your specific housing situation before departure — this determines whether Denmark keeps taxing your worldwide income after you leave.

3. Ports, airports and realistic transit times

Denmark’s main container gateway is the Port of Aarhus, the country’s largest container port, followed by the Port of Copenhagen; both connect by short-sea feeder and rail to the major transshipment hubs in Hamburg and Rotterdam that handle most Denmark–South America ocean cargo. Air freight and unaccompanied baggage typically move through Copenhagen Airport (CPH), Denmark’s largest cargo airport. On the Colombian side, seafreight typically arrives at the Port of Cartagena on the Caribbean coast, Colombia’s principal container gateway, with Bogotá’s El Dorado International Airport the main air-cargo entry point.

Freight-industry estimate, not an official figure: sea freight for a household shipment from a Danish port via a European transshipment hub to Cartagena typically runs 6–10 weeks door-to-port, plus final inland delivery time within Colombia; air freight is faster (days, not weeks) but is priced by weight and used mainly for smaller, urgent shipments. Actual transit depends on sailing schedules, transshipment connections, and customs clearance at both ends — always get a route-specific quote rather than relying on general benchmarks.

4. The Colombia import side: menaje doméstico

Household goods enter Colombia under the menaje doméstico regime — tariff subheading 9805.00.00.00 — which lets qualifying arriving residents bring in normal household furniture, appliances and personal effects without an import license, subject to a single 15% ad valorem tariff on the declared value (DIAN: ABC para la Importación de Menaje Doméstico, PDF). Eligibility requires the 24-month prior foreign residence test described above, and the shipment must physically arrive in Colombia within a window of 1 month before to 4 months after your own arrival date (DIAN).

Required supporting documents for the import declaration include your passport or other proof of foreign residence, a packing list or inventory of the goods, the transport document (bill of lading or air waybill), any power of attorney/endorsement for your customs agent, and invoices for items that were purchased new. In practice, most people moving to Colombia use a licensed customs agent (agencia de aduanas) to file the declaration on their behalf — DIAN’s own guidance is written with that workflow in mind.

Separately, anyone entering or leaving Colombia carrying cash or cash-equivalent instruments over USD 10,000 (or the equivalent in another currency) must file Form 530 ("Declaración de Equipaje, de Dinero en Efectivo y de Documentos Representativos de Dinero – Viajeros") with DIAN; declaring is free, mandatory, and not itself a tax event, but the form must be requested from your airline or from customs at the port of entry (DIAN Form 530).

5. Pets

Leaving Denmark. Fødevarestyrelsen (the Danish Veterinary and Food Administration) requires dogs, cats and ferrets travelling to non-EU ("third") countries to be rabies-vaccinated at least 21 days before travel, and reminds owners that requirements vary by destination and change frequently, so the pet owner is responsible for checking current rules before departure (Fødevarestyrelsen: Rejse med selskabsdyr til tredjelande).

Entering Colombia. ICA (Instituto Colombiano Agropecuario) requires an original sanitary/health certificate issued by an officially registered veterinarian, dated no more than 10 calendar days before the pet’s entry to Colombia, plus proof of rabies vaccination (minimum 21 days before travel) and the other core vaccinations and deworming ICA specifies (ICA: Ingreso de perros y gatos a Colombia). Separately, Colombian law bans the import of Pit Bull Terrier, American Pit Bull Terrier, Staffordshire Terrier and American Staffordshire Terrier dogs (including crosses of these breeds) under Ley 746 of 2002 (Ley 746 de 2002, official text). Book your pet’s vet visits with both ICA windows in mind (21 days for rabies, 10 days for the health certificate) — they don’t align by default.

6. Vehicles, money and things people forget

Vehicles. Do not plan to ship your Danish car to Colombia. Under the Andean Automotive Complementation Agreement — which DIAN applies to imports from all countries, not only Andean Community members — only new vehicles of the current or following model year may be imported, with a narrow exception for certified classic/antique vehicles (35+ years old under Colombian Ministry of Transport rules) imported with prior licence (DIAN’s official legal compilation). Vehicles, boats, motorcycles and their parts are explicitly excluded from the menaje doméstico household-goods category — plan to sell your car in Denmark before departure.

Money. Beyond the DIAN cash-declaration threshold above, budget for the 15% menaje doméstico tariff on your goods’ declared value, and get several independent valuations if you’re shipping high-value items, since DIAN assesses duty on the value you declare.

Things people forget. (1) CPR deregistration in Denmark is not automatic — foreign authorities generally do not notify Danish municipalities of your new address, so you must actively report it yourself if you move first and register your foreign address later (CPR.dk). (2) Owning Danish property, even rented out short-term, can keep you fully tax-liable in Denmark long after you’ve physically left — resolve this with SKAT before your departure date, not after. (3) Your menaje doméstico eligibility clock is strict on both ends — the 24-month prior foreign residence and the 1-month-before/4-months-after shipping window — so timing your sailing date against your own travel date matters as much as timing your visa application.

Reverse direction: moving from Colombia to Denmark

Moving back the other way runs on Denmark’s import rules rather than its export rules. Under SKAT’s guidance on personal effects (flyttegods), duty- and VAT-free import applies once you’ve had your permanent residence outside the EU for at least 12 consecutive months; the goods themselves must have been owned and used for at least 6 months before the move, and must arrive in Denmark between 6 months before and 12 months after your own relocation date (goods imported before you move require security to be posted for the duties and VAT) (SKAT F.A.18.3). Toldstyrelsen’s own press guidance for people returning home warns that filing this correctly on entry — rather than assuming it’s automatic — avoids unnecessary fines (Toldstyrelsen: Undgå bøder, når du vender hjem). You’ll also need to re-register in the CPR at your new Danish address on arrival (CPR.dk), and pets returning to Denmark from Colombia should check ICA’s export-side pet rules before leaving Colombia (ICA: Salida de perros y gatos desde Colombia) alongside the EU’s own pet-entry requirements.

How Flyto handles your Denmark to Colombia move

Flyto runs its own offices, warehouses, crews and vehicles across Northern, Central and Southern Europe, so the Danish collection, export documentation and European routing on your shipment are handled directly by our in-house teams rather than handed off blind. For the ocean leg and the Colombian side, we work through a carefully vetted network of subcontracted carriers and trusted local partners on the ground in Colombia, who manage the DIAN menaje doméstico clearance, last-mile delivery and any local formalities. That combination gives you one accountable point of contact for the whole corridor, backed by partners who know Colombian customs procedure firsthand.

Frequently asked questions

Do I need to be a Colombian resident to import my household goods duty-free?
You need to qualify under DIAN’s menaje doméstico regime, which requires at least 24 months of continuous or discontinuous foreign residence in the 3 years before your arrival to settle in Colombia — it isn’t tied to a specific visa type but to that residence history (DIAN).

Can I bring my car from Denmark?
No. Used vehicle imports are prohibited under the Andean Automotive Complementation Agreement, with a narrow exception for certified classic/antique vehicles under prior licence (DIAN’s official legal compilation).

When do I need to deregister from the Danish CPR?
Before departure, if you’ll be abroad more than 6 months — report it to your last Danish municipality (CPR.dk).

Will I stop paying Danish tax as soon as I leave?
Only once SKAT considers you to have genuinely given up your Danish residence, which depends on your housing situation — retained property can keep your full tax liability alive (SKAT).

How much cash can I bring into Colombia without declaring it?
Up to USD 10,000 or the equivalent; above that, Form 530 must be filed with DIAN — it’s a free, mandatory disclosure, not a tax (DIAN).

What’s the rabies vaccination timing for my dog or cat?
At least 21 days before travel out of Denmark, per Fødevarestyrelsen; Colombia additionally requires a health certificate dated within 10 days of arrival, per ICA — plan your vet visits around both windows.
