RoRo vs Container Shipping
There are two main methods to ship a car to Cyprus, and choosing between them is one of the biggest cost drivers.
RoRo (Roll-on/Roll-off)
With RoRo, your car is driven directly onto a dedicated vehicle vessel and secured on deck. It is usually the most economical option and works well for standard, roadworthy cars. Because the vehicle must be driven on and off, RoRo is only suitable for running vehicles, and you cannot pack personal belongings inside.
Container shipping
Here the car is loaded into a steel container, either on its own (sole use) or shared with other cargo (groupage/consolidation). Container shipping offers more protection from the elements and handling, and is preferred for high-value, classic, or modified vehicles. It typically costs more than RoRo, though shared containers narrow the gap.
Transit Times
Sea transit to Limassol varies with the origin port and whether the service is direct or transships. As a general guide, expect roughly the following door-to-port timings, plus port handling and clearance at each end:
- From Northern Europe (e.g. UK, Belgium, Germany): approximately 2–4 weeks of sailing, sometimes longer via transshipment.
- From Southern Europe / Mediterranean ports: often around 1–2 weeks.

Customs and VAT: EU Origin vs Non-EU Origin

EU-origin cars (a vehicle already in free circulation within the EU single market, shipped from another EU member state) are generally far simpler. There is no customs duty within the single market, and if the vehicle is Union goods, VAT will usually already have been accounted for. You will still need to address Cyprus registration and roadworthiness if the car is being kept and you become resident.
Non-EU-origin cars — for example a vehicle shipped from the UK, which is outside the EU customs union and single market since Brexit — may face import duty plus VAT on entry into Cyprus, unless you qualify for transfer-of-residence relief when moving your normal home to Cyprus. Relief conditions (such as how long you owned and used the car, and post-import ownership restrictions) are strict and change over time. Registration and Roadworthiness in Cyprus
Once the car has cleared customs, keeping it in Cyprus long-term (as a resident) means registering it locally with the Department of Road Transport and paying registration fees, which can include an emissions-based component. The vehicle must also pass a roadworthiness test — the Cyprus equivalent of an MOT — and carry local insurance and road tax before it is driven on public roads. At a high level the sequence is: customs clearance, roadworthiness inspection, registration and plates, then insurance and tax.
