Most cars from Europe route through a major hub port such as Antwerp, Bremerhaven, Hamburg or a Mediterranean terminal, then sail to Jebel Ali. As an indication, the ocean transit itself commonly takes around three to six weeks depending on the origin port, the service and whether the routing is direct or transships. Add one to three weeks for pre-loading logistics and booking a sailing, and a further one to two weeks at destination for clearance and release. In practice, plan for roughly six to ten weeks door-to-availability, and build in a buffer around peak periods.

RoRo vs container shipping
There are two mainstream methods. Roll-on/roll-off (RoRo) means your car is driven onto a dedicated vehicle vessel and secured on deck. It is usually the most cost-effective option for a single running car. Container shipping places the vehicle inside a 20ft or 40ft container, either on its own (sole use) or consolidated with other cargo; a 40ft container can also carry a small amount of accompanying household goods if you are shipping personal effects.

What it costs to ship a car to Dubai
There is no single fixed price, because cost depends on origin, method, vehicle size and market conditions. As a broad market guide, RoRo from a major European port to Jebel Ali often falls in the region of roughly EUR 900 to EUR 2,000 for the ocean freight, while container shipping (especially sole use) is typically higher. These are indicative ocean-freight ranges only and can move significantly with fuel costs, capacity and seasonality.

Customs duty and registration in the UAE
When your car arrives, UAE customs assess import duty. As a general rule, a customs duty of approximately 5% applies to the CIF value (cost, insurance and freight) of the vehicle, though thresholds, exemptions and documentation requirements can change, so confirm the current position with UAE customs or via your Flyto advisor. Duty is normally payable before the vehicle is released.
After clearance, the car must be registered before it can legally be driven. In Dubai this is handled by the Roads and Transport Authority (RTA); other emirates have their own authorities. Registration generally requires a technical inspection (test), valid UAE motor insurance, your Emirates ID or residence documents, and the customs and import paperwork. Older or heavily modified vehicles may face age and spec restrictions, and some models must meet GCC-specification requirements, so it is wise to check eligibility before shipping a particular car.
Left-hand-drive suitability and GCC spec
The UAE drives on the right, which means left-hand-drive (LHD) vehicles are the norm. This is good news for European sellers and expats: standard European LHD cars are well suited to UAE roads. That said, not every European model is sold in GCC specification, and there can be differences in cooling, air-conditioning and equipment intended for the region’s climate. There may also be limits on the age of vehicles that can be imported. Check the specific model’s eligibility and any GCC-spec considerations before booking.

Before loading, clean the vehicle inside and out to ease inspection, remove personal belongings (especially for RoRo), and document the car’s condition with dated photographs.
