Because each tax is calculated on the running total that includes the previous ones, the effective tax burden compounds quickly. It is entirely realistic for the combined duty and tax bill to match or surpass what the vehicle is worth. This is why so many relocations to Thailand end with the decision to sell the car at origin and buy locally instead.
Who can realistically import
In practice, the people who successfully import a personal car to Thailand tend to be returning Thai citizens or qualifying long-term residents who satisfy the ownership and residency conditions and obtain the necessary permit in advance. Even then, the tax cost can be substantial. If you are a foreign national relocating for work or retirement, you should assume that importing your existing car will be difficult or not permitted, and plan around buying or leasing a vehicle within Thailand. Thailand also drives on the left and uses right-hand-drive (RHD) vehicles, which is a further reason a left-hand-drive car brought from mainland Europe may be unsuitable.
Sea freight to Laem Chabang
When import is permitted and worthwhile, vehicles travel to Thailand by sea. The principal deep-sea gateway is Laem Chabang, the country’s largest port, which serves the Bangkok metropolitan area. From Northern and Central European hubs, ocean transit to Thailand typically runs in the region of four to seven weeks depending on routing, transhipment and sailing schedules. Add time at both ends for booking, inland movement, loading and customs clearance. Because Thai clearance can be slow and document-sensitive, always build in a generous buffer.
RoRo versus container
There are two main shipping methods, and each has trade-offs:
- RoRo (Roll-on/Roll-off): the car is driven onto a dedicated vehicle vessel and secured on deck. It is usually the more economical option and is well suited to standard, running vehicles. The car cannot contain personal belongings, and it is exposed to a shared vehicle deck environment.
- Container shipping: the vehicle is loaded into a container, either on its own or shared. It offers more protection from handling and weather, allows some approved accessories to travel secured with the car, and is the usual choice for high-value, classic or non-running vehicles. It typically costs more than RoRo.
