Moving a car to France is usually far simpler than people expect, provided you understand two things: how the vehicle will physically travel, and what France will ask of you when it arrives. How cars actually travel to France
The right method depends almost entirely on where the car starts.
Road transport (most EU-origin cars)
For a car already inside the European single market — Germany, the Nordics, the Benelux, Italy, Spain, Central Europe — the fastest and often cheapest option is a road transporter. Your car is loaded onto an enclosed or open multi-car trailer and driven to the French delivery address. There is no port handling, no sea leg and no customs frontier to cross within the EU. Most EU-origin cars we move to France go entirely by road.
RoRo shipping (roll-on/roll-off)
For overseas-origin cars, RoRo is the workhorse of car shipping. The car is driven onto a dedicated vehicle vessel and secured on deck. It is cost-effective and widely available into French and nearby European ports, but the car must be empty of personal belongings and in running order.
Container shipping
Container transport encloses the vehicle in a steel container (sole-use or shared). It costs more than RoRo but offers better protection for high-value, classic or modified cars, and allows some packed belongings to travel with the vehicle where rules permit.
Transit times
- Road within the EU: typically 2–8 working days depending on distance and whether the trailer is dedicated or consolidated.
- Short-sea / near-Europe RoRo: often several days to around two weeks including port handling.
- Intercontinental RoRo or container: commonly 3–8 weeks door-to-door, plus customs clearance on arrival.
These are indicative; sailing schedules, weather, port congestion and clearance times all move the real figures.
What drives the cost
Flyto does not quote invented fixed prices, because genuine costs vary with the route and the vehicle. The main drivers are:
- Distance and origin — a road move within Europe costs very differently from a sea crossing.
- Method — road vs RoRo vs container, and open vs enclosed transport.
- Vehicle size and weight — larger SUVs, vans and non-runners cost more.
- Door-to-door vs port-to-port — collection and final delivery add cost but remove hassle.
- Customs and taxes — see below; for non-EU origin these can exceed the transport itself.
- Insurance — marine or transit cover based on declared value.
As a rough orientation only, a road move between European countries often falls in the low-to-mid hundreds up to around a thousand euros, while intercontinental sea shipping typically runs into the low-to-mid thousands before duties and taxes. Treat these as market ranges, not guarantees — we confirm a firm figure for your exact route.
Customs and VAT: EU origin vs non-EU origin
This is where France’s requirements diverge most sharply.
Cars already in the EU
A car in free circulation within the EU single market moves to France with no customs duty and no import VAT, because it is already inside the customs union. You still have to register it in France, but there is no border tax event.
Non-EU origin, including UK cars post-Brexit
Since Brexit, the United Kingdom is outside the EU customs union. A car imported from the UK (or any non-EU country) may attract customs duty and French import VAT on arrival, unless you qualify for transfer-of-residence relief — a scheme that can waive duty and VAT when you are genuinely moving your normal residence to France and have owned and used the vehicle for a qualifying period beforehand. Conditions are strict and evidence-based. Rules change and depend on your residency status, so confirm the current position with French customs (douanes) before shipping.
Registering the car in France
Once the car is in France, you generally have a limited window to register it and obtain French plates. The process runs online through the ANTS platform and involves three key elements.
Quitus fiscal (tax clearance)
For a vehicle coming from another country you usually need a quitus fiscal — a certificate from the French tax office (service des impôts) confirming that VAT has been accounted for or is not due. This is a prerequisite for registration.
Contrôle technique (roadworthiness test)
If the car is older than the threshold (broadly, over four years), it must pass a French contrôle technique at an approved centre. A recent, valid test is required before you can register.
Carte grise (registration certificate)
With the quitus fiscal, contrôle technique (if applicable), proof of identity and address, insurance and a certificate of conformity for the vehicle, you apply via ANTS for the carte grise — the French registration certificate — and receive French number plates. Registration taxes vary by region and by the car’s fiscal power and emissions.

Preparing your car
- Clean the car inside and out so any pre-existing damage is visible for the condition report.
- Leave roughly a quarter tank of fuel for RoRo and driving on/off.
- Remove personal belongings, toll tags and loose fittings unless container rules allow otherwise.
- Disable alarms, note any leaks, and keep a spare key for handling.
- Gather documents in advance: title/ownership proof, registration certificate, certificate of conformity, ID and proof of French address.
Insurance
Reputable carriers carry liability cover, but we strongly recommend dedicated transit or marine insurance based on the car’s declared value, especially for sea legs. Separately, you will need a valid French motor insurance policy in place before the car can be driven and registered in France.
