Frequently asked questions
Do EU citizens need to register when moving to the Netherlands?
As an EU, EEA or Swiss national you may live and work in the Netherlands without a residence permit, but if you stay longer than four months you must register in person at your local municipality (gemeente), which enters you in the Personal Records Database (BRP) and issues your citizen service number (BSN). Skilled migrants may also be eligible for the 30% expat tax facility, which is set to reduce to 27% from 1 January 2027 (Government.nl).
Do I have to pay customs duties on my household goods?
No. The Netherlands is part of the EU single market, so household effects moved from another EU country are not subject to customs formalities, duties or import VAT. Customs rules only apply when goods are imported from outside the EU (Belastingdienst / Douane).
How much does an international move to the Netherlands cost and how long does it take?
The price is driven mainly by the volume of your belongings in cubic metres, the distance and options such as packing, storage or insurance, so an itemised, survey-based quote is far more reliable than a headline average. A road move from within the EU generally takes from a few days to around two weeks door to door depending on distance (Your Europe).
What deposit will I need to rent a home in the Netherlands?
Since the Good Landlordship Act (Wet goede verhuurderschap) took effect on 1 July 2023, the security deposit (waarborgsom) for a tenancy is capped at a maximum of two months’ basic rent. The landlord must return it within a set period after the lease ends, and municipalities can act against landlords who charge more (Government.nl).
How do I arrange health insurance in the Netherlands?
Dutch basic health insurance (basisverzekering) is compulsory, and once you become insured, for example by starting work or living here, you must take out a policy with a private insurer within four months, backdated to your start date. Before that, your EHIC covers necessary care (Government.nl).
Can I keep driving on my EU licence in the Netherlands?
Yes. A valid driving licence from an EU or EEA country is generally valid in the Netherlands for fifteen years from its date of issue, or until its own expiry date if that is sooner, after which you can exchange it for a Dutch licence. No exchange is needed simply because you have moved (Government.nl).
