Shipping from India to Dubai runs on the single largest migration corridor in the world: more than three million Indians live in the UAE, and every month thousands more arrive in Dubai, Abu Dhabi and Sharjah for work. Most come with suitcases – but professionals on long contracts, families joining a spouse and business owners moving a home ship a household: furniture, a kitchen, books, the temple shelf and the things that make a Dubai apartment feel like Mumbai or Bangalore. This page explains what that costs, how UAE customs treats it, and how the move actually runs from Mumbai, Delhi, Bangalore, Hyderabad, Chennai, Kochi and Pune.

Flyto Relocation arranges door-to-door moves from India to the UAE through vetted partner crews in India, sea and air freight contracted with established carriers, and destination partners in Dubai, Abu Dhabi and Sharjah. We do not own ships and we do not claim an office in India or Dubai – we manage the freight, the paperwork at both ends and the delivery, and stay your single point of contact throughout.

India–UAE is one of the shortest and busiest sea lanes in the world – Nhava Sheva and Mundra to Jebel Ali in a week of sailing – which is why prices are far below Europe or North America corridors. Prices exclude UAE customs inspection fees if your container is selected, the UAE 5 % VAT on any items that do not qualify as used personal effects, and storage if your UAE address is not ready. INR and AED prices are quoted at the current rate on request.

UAE customs for household goods

Used household goods and personal effects are imported into the UAE duty-free for a new resident, against your residence visa (or entry permit with the visa in process), Emirates ID application, passport copy and a detailed inventory. Without a residence visa the shipment is treated as a commercial import and charged 5 % duty plus 5 % VAT on the assessed value – so timing matters: the container should arrive after your visa is stamped, not before.

Prohibited or restricted: alcohol needs a permit and is not shipped with household goods; religious items are permitted for personal use; narcotics and many prescription medicines (codeine, tramadol) are strictly prohibited; drones, satellite equipment and certain radio devices need approval; pork products and any material offensive to Islamic values are banned. Gold and jewellery are declared with proof of ownership. New, boxed goods in quantity are dutiable.

Leaving India: export formalities

Household goods leave India as unaccompanied baggage under a personal-effects declaration: passport copy, UAE visa or offer letter, a packing list and a declaration that the goods are used and personal. Our Indian partner crews prepare the export documentation and clear the shipment at Nhava Sheva, Mundra, Chennai or Kochi. Antiques and items over 100 years old need an Archaeological Survey of India certificate.

Shipping from India: the route

Collection and export packing at home, photographed inventory (which becomes your UAE customs list), export clearance at the port, then the ocean leg to Jebel Ali, Khalifa Port or Sharjah. Customs clearance takes two to five days once your visa is in place; the destination partner then delivers to your apartment or villa, unpacks if booked and removes the packing material. Shared containers wait for consolidation and take one to two weeks longer than dedicated ones – but on this lane consolidations run weekly.

Booking window: 2–4 weeks before your preferred collection date for a dedicated container, 3–5 weeks for a shared container. Monsoon months (June–September) can delay collection in Mumbai, Kochi and Chennai; we build that into the schedule.

Packing for the Arabian Sea

A short voyage, but a humid one, followed by delivery in 40 °C heat. Export packing – double-walled cartons, blankets and stretch wrap, crates for glass, stone and artwork, desiccant against monsoon humidity – prevents mould and breakage. India and the UAE both run on 230 V/50 Hz, so appliances work with a plug adapter and are worth shipping. Dubai apartment buildings almost always require a moving permit from the building management and lift booking – the destination partner arranges it before delivery. Batteries, aerosols and gas cylinders are prohibited.

Moving from Dubai back to India

The same partners handle the reverse move. Returning Indians can import used household goods under Transfer of Residence rules with concessional duty after a minimum stay abroad of two years; the shipment must arrive within a set window of your return. We prepare the Indian customs declaration and clear at the port of entry.
