Customs and biosecurity: what you must know
New Zealand has two separate border processes, and both matter.
Customs. Your used household goods and personal effects can usually be imported free of duty and GST under Customs’ unaccompanied personal effects concession. To qualify, the goods must have been personally owned and used by you before you arrive, be for your own continued use (not for sale or gift), and you must generally have lived outside New Zealand for the required qualifying period. Unaccompanied shipments are declared on form NZCS 218 (Unaccompanied Personal Baggage Declaration), and giving false information on it is an offence.
