Removals from Spain to Sweden 2026: Costs, Transit Times and How the Move Works

Removals from Spain to Sweden 2026: Costs, Transit Times and How the Move Works

★ Flyto Oy: 4.9/5 from 500+ Google reviews · fixed price before loading · GoogleGet your fixed price (2 min) →

Short answer: Removals from Spain to Sweden cost most households €5,500–€6,700 including VAT in 2026. Flyto’s own quotes on this corridor (19 quotes, median distance 3,286 km) put the median at €6,000 for a Silver move of 5–15 m³ and €6,400 for a Gold move of 15–25 m³. A dedicated vehicle takes about 5–7 days door to door, a consolidated load 10–14 days. Both countries are in the EU, so there is no customs procedure for household goods; the work is deregistering in Spain and registering with Skatteverket in Sweden.

This guide is for households leaving Spain for Sweden in 2026: British and other foreign residents heading north, Swedes returning after years on the Costa del Sol or in Madrid, and Spanish families taking up work in Stockholm, Gothenburg or Malmö. It covers cost, route, the Spanish registrations to close, the Swedish ones to open, and how to judge a removal company on this 3,300 km corridor.

Removals from Spain to Sweden cost €5,500–€6,700 for most households in 2026

The figures below are not a price list. They are what Flyto customers were actually quoted for moves from Spain to Sweden in 2026, by load volume: number of quotes (n), median and interquartile range (p25–p75). Prices include VAT and are rounded to the nearest €50. Every move is priced individually on volume, both addresses, dates and access, so your own quote can fall outside these ranges.

For readers budgeting in kronor, at 1 € ≈ 11.3 SEK (approximate rate used on this page) the Silver medians are roughly SEK 68,000–69,000 and the Gold medians roughly SEK 72,000–73,000. Two things stand out. The 5–15 m³ and 15–25 m³ bands cost almost the same: on a 3,300 km lane the price is dominated by the vehicle, the driver’s days and the ferry or bridge, not by cubic metres. And the step from Gold to Platinum is much larger in the bigger band (€6,400 to €8,300), because full packing, materials and reassembly scale with the home even when transport does not.

Return direction for reference: Sweden to Spain (n = 34 quotes, median distance 3,292 km, incl. VAT)

Load volume Quotes Silver (median) Silver p25–p75 Gold (median) Gold p25–p75 Platinum (median)
5–15 m³ 12 €5,700 €4,950–€6,250 €6,100 €5,350–€6,600 €6,900
15–25 m³ 6 €9,900 €9,450–€12,600 €10,550 €10,100–€13,100 €12,800

The southbound 15–25 m³ band is markedly dearer, but that sample is six quotes with a wide range, so treat it as a ceiling rather than a rule. For that direction, see the Sweden-to-Europe removals page.

What Silver, Gold and Platinum include

Package Who loads and unloads Packing Protection, assembly, materials
Silver One mover works with you at both ends You pack boxes Add-ons
Gold Two professional movers (three above 30 m³) load, carry and unload into the agreed rooms You pack boxes Add-ons
Platinum As Gold Full packing into Flyto boxes, unpacking onto surfaces, empty boxes removed All included, plus disassembly and reassembly

Below Silver there is Flyto Budget (you load and unload a dedicated vehicle) and, for a few boxes of 1–6 m³, palletised freight in a shared network. All packages carry carrier liability under the CMR Convention, which is limited by weight; value-based cover is available separately. Extra work is billed at €85 per hour per mover, and single items over 80 kg (pianos, safes) are priced individually.

What moves the price on this corridor

  • Volume, less than you would expect. The vehicle and the driver’s days are the fixed cost; a house rather than a flat adds hundreds, not thousands, until a second vehicle is needed.
  • Access at both ends. A fourth-floor Spanish flat without a lift or a Stockholm street where the lorry cannot stop adds crew hours. An external furniture lift costs about €600 per side, a street parking reservation about €200 per side.
  • Dates. June to August is peak season; short-notice bookings pay for whatever capacity is left.
  • Dedicated versus consolidated. A dedicated vehicle moves on your dates; a consolidated load shares the vehicle and is cheaper but slower.
  • Storage. €100 per month per 6 m³ container plus €15/m³ one-off handling if the Swedish flat starts later than the Spanish lease ends.
  • Customs: none, unlike a move from Spain to the UK, Norway or Switzerland.

The route is about 3,300 km through France, Germany and Denmark, taking 5–7 days dedicated

There is no direct ferry between Spain and Sweden, so every household move on this corridor is a road move with a short crossing at the end. From Málaga or Madrid the lorry runs up through Zaragoza and Barcelona (or Burgos and Irun on the Atlantic side), through France, across Germany to Hamburg, and then enters Sweden one of two ways (Scandlines also runs Rostock–Gedser, about 2 hours, as a fallback):

Crossing Sea time Typical use
Puttgarden–Rødby ferry (Scandlines), then Denmark and the Øresund Bridge to Malmö 45 minutes (about 20 km) Fastest for Malmö, Gothenburg and Stockholm when the driver has hours left
Travemünde or Rostock–Trelleborg ro-ro ferry direct to Skåne Several hours, longer on overnight sailings (check the operator’s timetable) Driver rests on board and skips Denmark; common for southern Sweden

Scandlines publishes the Danish crossing times on its crossing-times page; the Øresund Bridge charges lorries per crossing, with a business contract that cuts the rate for regular hauliers (Øresundsbron, Truck). French and German motorway tolls come on top, and a fixed-price quote should already contain all of them.

Why the lorry cannot simply drive through. EU rules cap a professional driver at 9 hours of driving a day (10 hours twice a week), require a 45-minute break after 4½ hours, an 11-hour daily rest and a 45-hour weekly rest after six days (European Commission, Driving and rest times). At 600–700 km a day, 3,300 km is a five-day drive for one driver. Add a loading day in Spain and an unloading day in Sweden, and a dedicated vehicle typically delivers 5–7 days after loading. A consolidated load, which waits for a compatible second household and may route via a hub in Germany, typically lands within 10–14 days. Both are typical windows, not guarantees; if a date matters, have it written into the contract.

Seasonality. June to August is the busiest period on every European corridor; book three to five weeks ahead. From 10 November to 10 April, heavy lorries and trailers must carry winter tyres in Sweden regardless of the weather, and light vehicles must have them in winter conditions from 1 December to 31 March (Transportstyrelsen, Winter tyres). Serious snow around Stockholm can add a day; a competent operator plans for it rather than promising a date it cannot keep.

No customs between Spain and Sweden: the only paperwork is an inventory

Spain and Sweden are both EU member states inside the customs union. Household goods move between them like goods between two Spanish provinces: no import declaration, no duty, no VAT on entry and no transfer-of-residence relief to apply for, because there is no customs procedure at all. As an EU citizen you may stay in Sweden for up to three months without registering anywhere; for a longer stay the registration is the one described below with Skatteverket, not a residence permit (Your Europe, Residence rights). The only document your mover needs is a room-by-room inventory, which doubles as the delivery check and the basis of any insurance claim.

Leaving Spain: padrón, tax residence and the car

Padrón: foreigners request the baja, Spaniards register at the consulate instead

If you are a foreign resident (British, Nordic or other), ask your ayuntamiento for a baja por cambio de residencia al extranjero. Councils accept this request only from foreigners, because for them there is no other way to record that you have left; Spanish nationals are never removed on their own request (INE, Bajas en el padrón). File it in the last days before you leave, after the flat has been handed over, and keep the stamped copy: Swedish and Spanish authorities may both ask when you left.

If you are a Spanish national, register as a resident in the Registro de Matrícula Consular at the Spanish Embassy in Stockholm once you have an address. That registration triggers your padrón baja automatically; the embassy asks for the form, a copy of your DNI or passport and proof of residence, typically a personbevis from Skatteverket (Embajada de España en Estocolmo, Alta de residente; INE, Españoles en el extranjero).

Tax residence: the 183-day test decides the year, Modelo 030 records the change

The Agencia Tributaria treats you as Spanish tax resident for a whole calendar year if you spend more than 183 days of it in Spain, if the main base of your economic interests is in Spain, or, by rebuttable presumption, if your non-separated spouse and dependent minor children live there. Residence does not switch mid-year: a move in March normally makes you non-resident for that year, a move in October leaves you resident until 31 December. Sporadic absences count as days in Spain unless you show a certificate of tax residence from Skatteverket (Agencia Tributaria, Persona física residente en España). Report your new fiscal domicile abroad with Modelo 030. The Spain–Sweden double-taxation agreement treats public and private pensions differently, so returning pensioners should read the Agencia Tributaria’s summary for Sweden first (Agencia Tributaria, Sweden).

If you remain insured in Spain after the move, typically as a Spanish state pensioner or a posted worker, ask your Spanish social security institution for a portable document S1 and hand it to Försäkringskassan; it registers you for Swedish healthcare at Spain’s expense (Your Europe, Social security forms).

Taking a Spanish-registered car

Before the car leaves, request the baja definitiva por traslado a otro país at the DGT. It applies to moves inside the EU, can be done online with Cl@ve or a digital certificate and costs €8.67 (free for vehicles first registered 15 or more years ago). Keep the original registration documents: Sweden will want them (DGT, Baja por exportación). Time it for the day you leave: once the baja is recorded the car may no longer circulate on its Spanish plates, and the DGT’s alternatives are temporary green plates (placas verdes) or moving it on a transporter.

Arriving in Sweden: the first six weeks

Skatteverket and the personnummer come first

If you intend to stay a year or more, you must be entered in the population register (folkbokföring). File the online ”Flytta till Sverige” notification, possible up to 14 days before arrival, then attend an identity check in person at a state service centre with your original passport; each family member files separately. Skatteverket currently takes about four weeks to assign the case to an officer, and the result is your personnummer, which unlocks banking, BankID and healthcare (Skatteverket, Moving to Sweden; Skatteverket, Processing times). As an EU citizen you show right of residence through employment or self-employment, full-time study, or sufficient means to support yourself (Skatteverket, Citizen of an EU/EEA country), so bring the employment contract or proof of funds to the identity check.

Migrationsverket: nothing to do today, but a change is proposed

EU and EEA citizens with right of residence do not currently need to contact the Swedish Migration Agency (Migrationsverket, EU/EEA citizens). A government inquiry report published by the Ministry of Justice on 27 January 2026 (SOU 2026:9, Registrering av EES-medborgare) proposes that EEA citizens staying in Sweden longer than three months should, as a main rule, have to register with Migrationsverket. It is a proposal that would need a government bill and a vote in the Riksdag before it became law, and no start date has been fixed (Regeringen, SOU 2026:9). Check the Migrationsverket page in the month you move.

Försäkringskassan, driving licence and the car

Once in the population register, tell Försäkringskassan you have moved through its e-service or form 5456; it decides whether you are insured in Sweden, the gateway to subsidised healthcare and to child allowance (Försäkringskassan, Move to Sweden). Your EU driving licence stays valid in Sweden for as long as it is valid in the issuing country; exchanging it for a Swedish one is optional and costs SEK 375 (Transportstyrelsen, I have a driving licence). For the car, apply to Transportstyrelsen for verification of origin (fee SEK 1,240) with the original Spanish registration certificate and proof of ownership, then book a registration inspection at an accredited inspection company (Transportstyrelsen, Import from an EU country). Swedish vehicle tax is normally paid a year in advance; for a newly licensed car the first payment falls due within 21 days of the date it is licensed for use, and an annual tax above SEK 3,600 is split into three instalments (Transportstyrelsen, Vehicle tax).

Sweden uses the krona, and most banks want a personnummer before opening a full account. Keep your Spanish euro account open for the first months and close it only once community fees, utilities and insurance direct debits have been cancelled in writing.

Parking a removal lorry in Stockholm, Gothenburg or Malmö needs a permit

A lorry cannot legally stand on most Swedish inner-city streets for a six-hour unload. Each of the three big cities has an official temporary exemption; Stockholm and Malmö want the application at least a week ahead, Gothenburg publishes no lead time:

City Permit Fee Lead time
Stockholm Parkeringstillstånd: a dispens from the local traffic rules, granted only for ”särskilda skäl” and where traffic safety allows (Stockholms stad, Ansök om dispens) SEK 800 (a refusal costs the same) Apply at least one week ahead; decision usually within five working days
Gothenburg Temporary nyttoparkeringstillstånd, up to 30 working days (Göteborgs Stad, Nyttoparkeringstillstånd) SEK 225 per day for days 1–2, falling to SEK 75 after day 20 By e-mail to the city’s parking unit (parkering@stadsmiljo.goteborg.se); no lead time published, so apply as soon as the dates are fixed
Malmö Tillfällig trafikdispens, explicitly covering flyttarbete (Malmö stad, Tillfällig trafikdispens) SEK 250 handling fee At least one week ahead; answer in 1–2 working days

Flyto arranges these permits on request at actual cost plus a €50 handling fee; across Europe a street reservation typically works out at about €200 per side, and in these three cities the municipal fee is modest enough that the total usually comes in under that. On the Spanish side the equivalent is the ayuntamiento’s reserva de espacio or ocupación de vía pública para mudanzas for the loading day; the procedure, fee and notice period are set by each city, so ask the mover to apply in the city you are leaving.

Pets travel on an EU pet passport with no quarantine

Dogs, cats and ferrets move between Spain and Sweden on a European pet passport: microchip first, rabies vaccination second (at 12 weeks or older), then a 21-day wait after a first vaccination. The passport is valid for life while the rabies cover is kept up to date, and there is no quarantine between EU countries (Your Europe, Travelling with pets). Jordbruksverket, the Swedish Board of Agriculture, confirms the same three requirements for entry from an EU country (chip fitted before the rabies jab, vaccination at 12 weeks or older, 21-day wait) and adds two Swedish specifics: the animal must be declared to Tullverket on arrival, either by taking the red channel at the border or by pre-registering it on the customs website and using the green channel, and no tapeworm treatment is required because the parasite already exists in Sweden, unlike for Finland or Norway (Jordbruksverket, Ta in hundar från EU-länder). Pets do not travel on the lorry; plan the car journey or flight with the pets checklist for leaving Spain.

How to compare removal companies on the Spain–Sweden corridor

Quotes for this route vary by thousands of euros for the same flat, and the difference is rarely the lorry:

  • Is the price fixed before loading? A quote ”subject to final volume” on a 3,300 km move invites a dispute on delivery day. Insist on a fixed price after a video or in-person survey, with add-ons itemised.
  • Who does the physical work at each end? ”Door to door” can mean two trained movers in the flat or a driver at the kerb. Ask how many crew load in Spain and unload in Sweden, and whether they are own staff, a hub partner or a subcontractor found the week before.
  • What is the insurance basis? Every EU road carrier is liable under the CMR Convention, which pays by weight, not value. If the quote does not say, assume CMR and price the top-up yourself.
  • Do they actually run this corridor? A company that sends a Spain–Sweden load every fortnight knows the ferry timetables, the winter-tyre dates and the Stockholm permit desk.
  • Can the reviews be verified? Look for dated reviews with route details on a platform the company cannot edit, and read the negative ones.
  • Certification. FIDI-FAIM is the international quality certification for cross-border movers, audited by an independent third party (FIDI, FAIM certification). In Sweden, members of Sveriges Möbeltransportörers Förbund (SMF, founded 1946) are bound to follow decisions of Allmänna reklamationsnämnden, the consumer disputes board (SMF, Om SMF). Neither is a guarantee, but both show the company has accepted outside scrutiny.

Our guide to choosing a moving company for leaving Spain goes through these points for every destination, and the Spain moving guides cover the other corridors north.

How Flyto handles a move from Spain to Sweden

Flyto runs the corridor from its own Southern Europe hub in Málaga through the Central Europe hub near Düsseldorf, with partner depots in Stockholm, Gothenburg, Malmö and every other major Swedish city for delivery. The price is fixed before loading and covers transport, tolls, the ferry or bridge and the crew work of the package you choose. You sign one contract and deal with one contact person from survey to delivery, and the goods are insured door to door. Relocation services such as home search, registration paperwork and settling-in are available as an add-on through vetted partners in Sweden.

Frequently asked questions

How much does it cost to move from Spain to Sweden in 2026?

Flyto’s 2026 quotes on this corridor put the median at €6,000 including VAT for a Silver move of 5–15 m³ and €6,400 for a Gold move of 15–25 m³, with the middle half of quotes between about €5,500 and €6,700. Platinum, with full packing and reassembly, ran €6,950 to €8,300. Use these as a benchmark, not a tariff.

How long does a removal from Spain to Sweden take?

The road distance is about 3,300 km. A dedicated vehicle with one driver, limited to 9 hours of driving a day under EU rules, typically delivers 5–7 days after loading, including the ferry or bridge into Sweden. A consolidated load that shares the vehicle with another household typically arrives within 10–14 days. Both are typical windows; ask for a fixed delivery date in the contract if you need one.

Is there any customs paperwork for household goods between Spain and Sweden?

No. Both countries are in the EU customs union, so there is no import declaration, duty, VAT or transfer-of-residence relief to apply for; the mover’s inventory is the only document. This differs from Spain to the UK, Norway or Switzerland, where a customs clearance is required.

Do I have to deregister from the Spanish padrón before I leave?

If you are a foreign resident, yes: request a baja por cambio de residencia al extranjero from your ayuntamiento in the last days before you leave and keep the stamped copy. If you are a Spanish national, you cannot request a baja; you register as a resident at the Spanish Embassy in Stockholm once you have a Swedish address, and the padrón baja follows automatically.

When will I be treated as tax resident in Sweden rather than Spain?

Spain looks at the whole calendar year: more than 183 days in Spain, or your main economic base or family there, makes you Spanish tax resident for that year, and residence does not change mid-year. Report your new fiscal domicile with Modelo 030 and, if asked, show a certificate of tax residence from Skatteverket. The Spain–Sweden double-taxation agreement then decides where each type of income, including pensions, is taxed.

How do I get a Swedish personnummer as an EU citizen?

File the ”Flytta till Sverige” notification with Skatteverket, which you can do up to 14 days before arrival, then visit a state service centre in person with your passport and proof of right of residence (employment contract, study admission or proof of funds). Skatteverket currently takes about four weeks to assign the case to an officer. The personnummer is needed before most banks will open an account.

Can I bring my Spanish-registered car and keep my Spanish licence?

Yes to both. Request the DGT’s baja definitiva por traslado a otro país (€8.67) before the car leaves, then apply to Transportstyrelsen for verification of origin (SEK 1,240), pass a registration inspection and pay Swedish vehicle tax. Your EU driving licence stays valid in Sweden for as long as it is valid in the issuing country; exchanging it for a Swedish licence is optional.
