Customs and paperwork
From another EU country there is no customs on household goods – the move is transport plus registration. From the UK, Switzerland and Norway there is: household goods you have owned and used for at least six months are imported duty- and VAT-free when you transfer your residence to Belgium, on a Transfer of Residence declaration to Belgian customs with proof of at least 12 months’ residence outside the EU, proof of your Belgian address or employment and an inventory. New items, alcohol beyond the allowance and goods for a second home pay 21 % VAT plus duty. Since Brexit, British citizens need a residence permit or a work permit to live in Belgium – EU-institution staff and their families are handled through the Protocol service; everyone else applies at the commune after arrival.
Once in the country: register at the commune within eight working days of arrival; the police will visit to confirm you live there, after which you receive the residence card and national number you need for a bank account, mutuelle (health insurance fund) and employment. Leaving Belgium: deregister at the commune (attest van vertrek / modèle 8), which stops regional taxes and triggers the export of your social-security records.
Customs for a move from the UK to Belgium
Household goods moving within the EU carry no customs step at all – Belgium to France, Belgium to Spain and Spain to Belgium in the table above are transport and registration only. The UK is different since Brexit: goods crossing from Great Britain into Belgium are a genuine import, and paperwork runs on both ends of the corridor.
On the Belgian side, FPS Finance’s transfer-of-residence relief keeps household goods free of duty and the standard 21 % VAT, provided: the goods were owned and used for at least six months before the move; the applicant had a normal residence outside the EU for at least twelve consecutive months beforehand; and the goods are declared for import within twelve months of establishing Belgian residence, then kept for personal use for a further twelve months. Alcohol and tobacco are excluded outright, and anything bought new for the move, or still in its original packaging, pays the standard 21 % VAT plus duty on top. Belgian customs ask for a valued inventory, proof of the UK address given up and proof of the new Belgian address or employment; the full conditions are set out by FPS Finance’s guidance for moving from a non-EU country to Belgium.
On the UK side, goods leaving Great Britain still require an export declaration before the vehicle or container departs. Removal companies and their customs agents normally handle this as part of the shipment paperwork rather than the customer filing it directly, but it is not optional; the general mechanics of filing a UK export declaration, including via a freight forwarder or customs agent, are set out in the UK government’s guidance on making a UK customs declaration – check the specifics with your mover or HMRC, since requirements for a private household move can differ from a commercial shipment. In practice the same inventory used for the export declaration supports the Belgian transfer-of-residence import, so the corridor runs on one document set rather than two separate ones.
What separates a remover from a quote-matching site
Most first-page results for movers in Belgium are comparison portals – Sirelo, Verhuisoffertes.be, Trustlocal.be – plus the large brands. Portals are useful for collecting quotes; they do not move anything, and the cheapest bid is the one most likely to add charges at the door. The questions that separate a serious remover:
- Who loads and who delivers? A company that asks about your Ixelles staircase and the commune’s parking reservation before quoting has done the address before.
- Is the price fixed before loading? Volume-based fixed pricing with the access conditions and the lift written in. Hourly or ”estimated” quotes are where the surprises live.

Belgium-specific practicalities
Appliances: 230 V, type E sockets – Schuko plugs fit, UK plugs need adapters. Kitchens: Belgian rentals normally include a fitted kitchen, unlike Germany. Cars: re-registration with the DIV within six months, Belgian technical inspection and insurance; a UK car can be imported VAT-free as household goods if owned six months. Pets: EU pet passport from an EU origin; animal health certificate within 10 days from the UK. Languages: the commune’s paperwork is in Dutch in Flanders, French in Wallonia and either in Brussels – bring documents that match. Rental hand-over: Belgian leases require a detailed entry inventory (plaatsbeschrijving / état des lieux) – schedule it before delivery, not after.
Seasonality
Demand peaks from June to September and at month-ends; February and November are the quietest and cheapest. In Flyto’s enquiry data 63 % of planned European moves fall in July–September. If your dates are flexible, a consolidated move outside the peak is the best value; if you must move in late August – when Brussels’ international schools start – book six to eight weeks ahead and accept a delivery window rather than a day.
Belgian city access for a moving truck
Every Belgian city with a historic core treats a moving vehicle as a temporary obstruction on the public road and expects a permit for it; leaving this to the day of the move is the most common way a fixed price turns into a carrying surcharge.
Brussels: each of the nineteen communes runs its own reservation, most of them through the IRISbox portal, five to ten working days ahead depending on the commune (as above, Ixelles asks for at least seven). Since 1 January 2026 the region’s low-emission zone also bars Euro 5 diesel and Euro 2 petrol vehicles from the Brussels-Capital Region; a €35 day pass is available for a non-compliant vehicle, and a €350 fine can follow a first warning, with enforcement tightening further from July 2026 – worth checking against the moving company’s own fleet, not only your car.
Antwerp: a temporary parking ban with signage is requested through the city’s online service at least five working days ahead (two days via the paid emergency route), from roughly €65 for a standard reservation; the city’s page on moving, works and deliveries covers the wider process. Antwerp’s low-emission zone continues to allow Euro 5 diesel and Euro 2 petrol vehicles through 2026, after Flanders postponed the planned tightening.
Ghent: occupying the parking strip for a move needs at least fifteen working days’ notice, rising to twenty-six days if the truck or lift also needs the roadway or pavement, applied for via Stad Gent’s public-domain permit page; the city does not supply the parking-ban signs itself, so these are rented separately from a signage company. Ghent’s 2026 low-emission zone conditions also remain at Euro 5 diesel / Euro 2 petrol.
Liège: a temporary parking permit for the moving vehicle is requested online through the city’s public-road-occupation application, and no-parking signage for the reserved spot can be requested from as little as two working days ahead of the move (the wider occupation request itself needs more notice); the process is described on the Police de Liège page on occupying the public road. Unlike Brussels, Antwerp and Ghent, Liège has no operational low-emission zone yet, though one is under study.
