Removals from the UK to Belgium 2026: Costs, Customs, Transit and Registration

A removal from the UK to Belgium is a short road move with a long paperwork tail. The van is in Brussels two to three hours after it rolls off at Calais or Dunkirk, but because Great Britain sits outside the EU customs union it needs an export declaration on the way out, an import declaration with transfer-of-residence relief on the way in, and a driver who knows the Belgian city zones and parking rules at the delivery address. What a removal from the UK to Belgium costs in 2026

Flyto prices every move on volume, the two addresses, the dates and the access at each end, so there is no price list; the table shows what customers were actually quoted in 2026. Belgium alone produced too few quotes this year for a reliable band, so the figures are Flyto’s UK to Netherlands quotes, which use the same Dover–Calais or Dover–Dunkirk crossing and a very similar 550–650 km road leg; a Brussels or Antwerp delivery sits at the shorter end. Prices include VAT, rounded to the nearest €50. Pound figures are approximate at 1 € ≈ £0.85.

Every package includes dedicated road transport on agreed dates and carrier liability under the CMR Convention, which is weight-based; value-based insurance is available separately. For a few boxes, pallet freight (roughly 1–6 m³, you pack and palletise) is the cheapest option. Extra work is billed at €85 per hour per mover; single items over 80 kg such as pianos and safes are priced separately.

What moves the price on this corridor

• Volume is the main driver; a cubic-metre estimate from a video survey avoids the usual quote-to-invoice gap.
• Access: a fourth-floor Brussels flat without a lift or a long carry adds crew time; an external furniture lift is about €600 per side (actual cost plus €50 handling).
• Parking reservation: Belgian cities require a permit to reserve kerb space, typically about €200 per side including handling (details below).
• Dates: month-end, school holidays and December are tight on crossings and crews; bookings inside two weeks rarely get the median price.
• Customs: clearance handling is included for UK moves; duties or VAT charged on goods that do not qualify for relief are not.
• Storage: €100 per month per 6 m³ container plus €15/m³ handling, useful when the Belgian lease starts after the UK one ends.

The route: Calais or Dunkirk, then two to three hours to Brussels

Almost every UK to Belgium removal goes by road via the short straits. From London the drive to Dover or Folkestone is about 125 km, the crossing is 35 minutes to two hours, and Calais to Brussels is about 205 km on the A16 and E40 with Ghent at roughly 150 km and Antwerp at 240 km. A London to Brussels door-to-door run is therefore around 370 km of driving; from Manchester or Leeds it is closer to 650 km. The crossing options in 2026:

• P&O Ferries Dover–Calais: about 90 minutes, a minimum of 11 sailings a day including overnight departures.
• DFDS Dover–Dunkirk: about two hours, up to 22 sailings a day; Dunkirk is 40 km closer to Belgium than Calais.
• LeShuttle Folkestone–Calais: 35 minutes through the tunnel; removal lorries use the separate LeShuttle Freight service.
• P&O Ferries Hull–Rotterdam: a 12-hour overnight crossing that suits loads from Yorkshire and the North East, with Antwerp about 100 km from the Rotterdam terminal.

Transit time you can plan around

Flyto’s rule of thumb is one driving day per 600–700 km for a dedicated vehicle, plus the loading and unloading days. On a 370–650 km corridor that means loading on day one, delivery on day two or three, with a fourth day when the crossing or a Belgian parking permit forces a specific slot. A shared load is cheaper but adds a delivery window of five to ten days. These are typical figures, not guarantees. The driver is bound by Regulation (EC) 561/2006: nine hours of driving a day (ten twice a week), a 45-minute break after four and a half hours and eleven hours of daily rest, so an evening load in London does not become a morning delivery in Antwerp.

The export declaration must be lodged before port check-in. At border locations using HMRC’s Goods Vehicle Movement Service the haulier also needs a Goods Movement Reference linking the declarations to the vehicle. A properly documented household move usually clears without a roadside inspection.

Customs: export from Great Britain, transfer-of-residence relief in Belgium

Since 1 January 2021 a UK to Belgium removal is a third-country import into the EU. Two declarations are needed, and for a genuine change of home neither should cost you duty or VAT.

Leaving Great Britain

Goods leaving England, Wales or Scotland need an export declaration on HMRC’s Customs Declaration Service, lodged by a party with a GB EORI number. GOV.UK confirms you can ”hire someone to deal with customs and transport the goods for you”, and in practice the removal company or its customs agent files the export entry against your inventory. There is no UK export duty on household goods; you supply the inventory, a passport copy and the Belgian address, and file nothing yourself.

Entering Belgium duty- and VAT-free

The Belgian FPS Finance (Customs and Excise) applies the EU relief for personal property of people transferring their normal place of residence from a non-EU country. The conditions, from the FPS Finance page on moving from a non-EU country to Belgium and the underlying Council Regulation (EC) 1186/2009:

• You must have had your normal residence outside the EU for at least twelve consecutive months before the move.
• The goods must have been in your possession, and used by you, for at least six months before you gave up your UK residence. Furniture bought new for the Belgian home does not qualify and is liable to duty and 21 % Belgian VAT.
• The goods must be imported within twelve months of the date you establish your residence in Belgium; split shipments are allowed inside that window.
• Relief can be granted before you have settled in Belgium if you undertake to establish residence within six months; FPS Finance requires a security deposit in that case.
• For twelve months after import the goods may not be lent, pledged, hired out or sold without notifying customs first; otherwise the relief is revoked and duties become payable.
• Alcohol, tobacco, commercial vehicles and goods for use in a trade or profession (other than portable tools) are excluded from the relief.

Belgian customs sees the import declaration filed by the mover’s agent with an inventory, your passport, evidence of at least twelve months of UK residence (council tax bills, a P60 or tenancy agreement) and evidence of the Belgian address such as a signed lease or commune registration receipt. Separately, anyone entering the EU with €10,000 or more in cash must declare it, and a car driven across on UK plates is declared on its own, not with the furniture.

Residence, registration and the first weeks in Belgium

UK nationals need a long-stay visa before moving

British citizens lost EU free-movement rights at the end of 2020. The Belgian Immigration Office states that UK nationals who did not live in Belgium before then ”must follow the rules and procedures applicable to third-country nationals”. In practice that means a type D long-stay visa from the Belgian embassy in London on the basis of work (usually a single permit applied for by the employer), study, family reunification or sufficient own means. Without one you are a visitor limited to 90 days in any 180-day period in Schengen, and the EU Entry/Exit System now records entries and exits biometrically. UK nationals registered in Belgium before 31 December 2020 hold Withdrawal Agreement status and do not need a visa.

Register at the commune within eight days

The holder of a D visa ”must report to the municipal administration of the place where they reside within 8 days of arrival”. After a residence check the commune enters you in the register of foreign nationals and issues the electronic residence card (A card). Bring your passport with the visa, the lease or deed and passport photos. The national register number on the card unlocks everything else: bank account, health insurance, tax file and utilities. Driving licence: 185 days, then exchange at the commune

You can drive on a UK licence for 185 days after registering in Belgium. After that, GOV.UK states you ”can exchange your UK or Isle of Man licence without having to take a test”; Jersey and Guernsey licences may require one. The Belgian FPS Mobility explains that the application is made at the driving-licence desk of your commune, that the Belgian licence can only be issued once you have been registered for 185 days, and that you may keep driving on the recognised UK licence until then. Note GOV.UK’s warning that once you hand the UK licence in for exchange you cannot drive until the Belgian one arrives, so time it around the move itself.

Taking a car: V5C export, then Belgian registration

If the car moves permanently, fill in the permanent-export section of the V5C, send it to DVLA, Swansea, SA99 1BD and keep the rest of the logbook for the Belgian registration; unused vehicle tax is refunded within four to six weeks. In Belgium the car must be registered and taxed locally; there are no common EU rules on vehicle registration, so expect a technical inspection, a customs document and Belgian insurance before plates are issued. A car owned for six months qualifies for the same transfer-of-residence relief as the furniture, declared separately.

Pets: animal health certificate, not a GB pet passport

A dog, cat or ferret travelling from Great Britain to Belgium needs a microchip, a rabies vaccination given at least 21 days before travel and an animal health certificate issued by an official vet within ten days of arrival, valid ten days for entry and six months for onward travel in the EU. Enter through a travellers’ point of entry with the certificate and vaccination record ready. GOV.UK lists the countries that require a tapeworm treatment for dogs; check that page for Belgium and for the return journey, since a dog coming back to Great Britain needs one. Pets cannot travel in the removal vehicle.

Belgian city rules that affect the removal vehicle

Brussels, Antwerp and Ghent all run low-emission zones and all require a permit to reserve kerb space for a removal van. A mover who has not registered its vehicles or applied in time either pays fines or parks a long carry from your door, and both end up on your invoice.

A Euro 6 removal lorry is admitted everywhere, but registration of a UK-plated vehicle is still compulsory in all three zones. Ask your mover whether its vehicle is registered where you are moving to.

Reserving parking for the removal van

How to compare removal companies for a UK to Belgium move

• Insist on a fixed price after a survey. A video survey that produces a cubic-metre figure, a named package and a total in writing is the baseline; ”from” prices are where post-Brexit surcharges appear.
• Ask who files the customs entries and what it costs. The mover should say whether clearance is included, which agent files it and what happens if an item is not eligible for relief.
• Check who loads and unloads, and how many people. A quote is only comparable when the crew size and the carry are the same.
• Understand the insurance basis. CMR carrier liability is weight-based; ask for the declared-value option in writing before you sign.
• Verify the company, not the website. A UK firm should have a Companies House number and a GB EORI, an EU mover a VAT number you can check in VIES; read reviews on a platform the company cannot edit and look for ones that mention Belgium or customs.
• Ask about Belgian city access. LEZ registration and parking permits separate a mover that works Belgium every week from one that does not.
