Customs after Brexit: Transfer of Residence
Household goods you have owned for at least six months are imported into Spain duty- and VAT-free when you move your residence, under the EU Transfer of Residence relief. The Spanish declaration needs your NIE, proof that you have lived outside the EU for at least 12 months (council tax bills, P60s, tenancy or mortgage statements), proof of your new Spanish address (escritura, rental contract or empadronamiento) and a detailed inventory in Spanish. The goods must arrive within 12 months of establishing residence and cannot be sold for 12 months. New items, alcohol and anything commercial are dutiable and taxed at 21 % VAT.
Timing is the trap: the relief requires that you are already resident – or can prove imminent residence – when the goods clear customs. We sequence the move so that the container or vehicle arrives after your NIE and address paperwork exist, not before.

Visa first, then the van
British citizens need a visa to live in Spain: the non-lucrative visa for retirees and the financially independent, the digital nomad visa for remote workers, or a work or family visa. The visa is applied for from the UK and takes two to three months. Book the move for after the visa appointment, not before – a container sitting in Algeciras waiting for a visa that has not been granted is the most expensive way to store furniture.
The coast, address by address
Málaga city and the eastern coast (Rincón de la Victoria, Torre del Mar, Nerja) have old-town streets where a 3.5-tonne van is the largest vehicle that fits; we shuttle from a larger truck. Torremolinos, Benalmádena and Fuengirola are dense apartment stock with lifts that rarely take a sofa – hoists are common. Mijas Costa, Calahonda and the Marbella urbanisations have gated communities with access rules and delivery windows. Marbella old town, Estepona old town and Manilva–Sabinillas need town-hall parking permits. Inland – Coín, Alhaurín, Mijas Pueblo, Ojén – means mountain roads and reversing a truck onto a track. What to leave behind
UK electrical appliances work in Spain (230 V), but UK plugs need adapters and gas appliances certified for the UK are not legal to install in Spain. Garden furniture and outdoor kit should be cleaned. Cars can be brought but must be re-registered in Spain within six months, with import tax unless you qualify for Transfer of Residence relief on the vehicle too – and a right-hand-drive car on Spanish roads is a compromise most people regret. Pets need an animal health certificate from a UK vet within 10 days of travel, microchip and rabies vaccination.
Moving back to the UK from the Costa del Sol
