Frequently asked questions

Do EU citizens need a permit to move to Sweden, and how do I get a personnummer?
EU/EEA citizens have an automatic right of residence and no longer register with the Migration Agency, while non-EU nationals need a residence permit before moving. If you intend to stay a year or more you register in the Population Register at the Swedish Tax Agency (Skatteverket), which assigns your personnummer — the key to banking, healthcare and BankID.

Do I have to clear customs for my household goods when moving to Sweden?
No. As Sweden is in the EU single market, household goods brought from another EU country move freely with no customs formalities or import duty. Only goods imported from outside the EU must be declared to Swedish Customs (Tullverket).

How much does an international move to Sweden cost and how long does it take?
There is no set tariff; the cost depends on the volume of your goods (in cubic metres), the distance and access, so movers give a fixed quote after a survey. Road removals from elsewhere in Europe generally take from a few days up to around two weeks. General relocation guidance is available on the official portal sweden.se.

How do I find housing in Sweden?
Most newcomers rent first; first-hand contracts can involve long queues, so many start with second-hand (sublet) rentals, and demand is strongest in Stockholm, Gothenburg and Malmö. A personnummer and BankID make renting much easier. Housing rules and tenants’ rights are explained by the National Board of Housing, Boverket.

How do I access healthcare after moving to Sweden?
Once you are registered with a personnummer you can use Sweden’s regional public healthcare, largely funded through tax with modest patient fees; information and advice are available via 1177. EU citizens can use a European Health Insurance Card while their registration is being completed.

Can I use my driving licence in Sweden?
A driving licence issued in the EU/EEA is valid in Sweden and does not need to be exchanged, while many non-EU licences are valid only for a limited period and must be exchanged, sometimes with tests. Licences are administered by the Swedish Transport Agency (Transportstyrelsen).
