Frequently asked questions
Do EU citizens need to register when moving to Luxembourg?
As an EU, EEA or Swiss national you may live and work in Luxembourg without a residence permit, but you must make a declaration of arrival (déclaration d’arrivée) at the commune (town hall) of your new address shortly after moving in. If you stay longer than three months you then complete a registration formality confirming your right of residence (Guichet.lu).
Do I have to pay customs duties on my household goods?
No. Luxembourg is part of the EU single market, so household goods moved from another EU country circulate freely with no customs declaration, duties or import VAT. Customs formalities only apply to goods coming from outside the EU (Administration des douanes et accises).
How much does an international move to Luxembourg cost and how long does it take?
Cost depends mostly on the volume of your goods in cubic metres, the distance and services such as packing, storage or insurance, so an itemised, survey-based quotation is more reliable than an average figure. Road moves from within the EU usually take from a few days to about two weeks door to door depending on distance (Your Europe).
What deposit will I need to rent a home in Luxembourg?
Under the residential lease reform of 23 July 2024, in force since 1 August 2024, the rental guarantee is capped at a maximum of two months’ rent, down from the previous three months. The cap is based on the bare rent, excluding utilities and charges, and the deposit is returned after the exit inventory (Guichet.lu).
How do I register for healthcare in Luxembourg?
Health insurance is compulsory, and if you work in Luxembourg your employer registers you with the Joint Social Security Centre (CCSS), after which you are affiliated to the National Health Fund (Caisse nationale de santé, CNS) for reimbursement of care. Before your affiliation is active, your EHIC covers necessary treatment (CNS).
Can I keep my EU driving licence in Luxembourg?
Yes. A valid driving licence issued by an EU or EEA country remains valid in Luxembourg, so you can continue to use it as a resident without exchanging it. You only need to exchange it in specific situations, such as when it expires or after certain administrative or medical requirements (Guichet.lu).
