Relocating from Sweden to the Kingdom of Bahrain means crossing an EU external border in both the legal and the logistical sense. Your shipment has to be cleared out of the European Union by the Swedish authorities and cleared in to the Gulf by Bahraini authorities, and each side has its own forms, thresholds and conditions. This guide covers both halves of the corridor — the Swedish export and deregistration side, and the Bahraini import and residence side — plus a short note on doing the trip in reverse. It is written for anyone registered in Sweden who is taking up work or residence in Bahrain: professionals on an employer-sponsored permit, returning Bahrainis, and families shipping a full household.

Key takeaways

  • Leaving Sweden for a year or more means notifying the Swedish Tax Agency (Skatteverket) and being deregistered from the population register using form SKV 7665b (Skatteverket).
  • Your household goods must be declared to Tullverket (Swedish Customs) on an export declaration using commodity code 9905 00 00 and procedure code 1000 for emigrant belongings (Tullverket).
  • Deregistration does not automatically end Swedish tax liability — "essential connection" ties can keep you taxable in Sweden, and non-resident income is taxed under SINK (22.5% in 2026) (Skatteverket).
  • In Bahrain, used household goods enter duty-free if you own them, they are for personal use, and you import them within six months of arrival, holding a valid Residence Permit and CPR card (Bahrain Customs).
  • New items are subject to 5% customs duty and 10% VAT in Bahrain (Bahrain Customs; Bahrain National Portal).
  • Bahrain residence is issued by Nationality, Passports and Residence Affairs (NPRA), usually after an employer-sponsored work permit through the LMRA (Bahrain eGovernment).
  • Pets leaving Sweden need an official export health certificate from the Swedish Board of Agriculture (Jordbruksverket); Bahrain sets its own import-permit and vaccination rules on arrival (Jordbruksverket).
  • Carrying EUR 10,000 or more in cash across the Swedish border must be declared to Tullverket (Tullverket).

1. Your Bahrain immigration status drives the customs treatment

The single most important thing to sort out before you ship is your residence status in Bahrain, because it determines whether your household goods clear duty-free. Bahrain grants the transfer-of-residence exemption on used personal effects only to people who are genuinely establishing residence — which in practice means you need a valid Residence Permit and a Central Population Registry (CPR) card to present at customs (Bahrain Customs).

For most people moving from Sweden, that residence permit follows an employer-sponsored work permit. A Bahraini employer registers as your sponsor and applies for the work permit through the Labour Market Regulatory Authority (LMRA); the actual residence permit is then issued by Nationality, Passports and Residence Affairs (NPRA) under the Ministry of Interior (Bahrain eGovernment). Because the customs exemption is tied to that permit, the usual sequence is: secure the job and work permit, activate residence and CPR on arrival, then time the sea freight so it lands within the six-month window. Shipping before your permit is issued risks losing the duty-free treatment.

2. The Sweden export side: Tullverket, deregistration and tax exit

Customs — Tullverket. Sweden’s customs authority is Tullverket. Bahrain is outside the EU, so leaving Sweden with your household goods counts as an export from the customs territory of the Union. You (or your removal company acting for you) must lodge an export declaration on the Single Administrative Document. Tullverket’s own guidance for emigrant belongings specifies the field entries: declaration type EX, commodity code 9905 00 00 ("personal property belonging to the emigrant"), procedure code 1000 for regular export of personal belongings, and nature of transaction 9 (Tullverket). You attach an itemised packing list; capital goods such as vehicles, televisions, computers and refrigerators must be listed specifically, while ordinary effects can be grouped as "books, household goods, linen and clothing." There is no minimum value or weight threshold — the declaration is required regardless of size. Firearms and certain cultural goods need extra authorisations (the Swedish National Heritage Board issues export licences for cultural objects) (Tullverket).

Deregistration — Skatteverket. If you are leaving Sweden for a year or more, you must notify the Swedish Tax Agency (Skatteverket) so you can be removed from the population register. The notification uses form "Moving abroad" (SKV 7665b), submitted before departure to Skatteverket’s processing centre (Skatteverkets inläsningscentral, FE 2001, 839 86 Östersund). If you originally planned a shorter stay but then extend it past a year, you must notify as soon as you decide (Skatteverket). Deregistration affects your access to Swedish services and is the formal marker that you no longer live in Sweden.

Tax residency exit. Deregistering does not by itself end your Swedish tax liability. Under Swedish rules you can remain tax resident if you keep "essential connection" (väsentlig anknytning) to Sweden — a retained home, family, or ongoing business — and Skatteverket can treat you as resident for a period after departure while those ties persist. Once you are a non-resident, Swedish-source income (for example a Swedish pension or board fees) is taxed under SINK, the flat special income tax for non-residents, at 22.5% for income received in 2026 (falling to 20% from 2027), applied for using form SKV 4350 (Skatteverket). Get a written residency determination if you are keeping property in Sweden.

3. Ports and transit times

Sweden’s deep-sea gateway is the Port of Gothenburg (Göteborg) — Scandinavia’s largest container port, handling around 57% of Sweden’s container trade and over 900,000 containers a year (Port of Gothenburg). Household-goods containers bound for the Gulf are almost always consolidated through Gothenburg. Air freight typically routes via Stockholm Arlanda or Gothenburg Landvetter. On the Bahrain end, sea freight arrives at Khalifa Bin Salman Port in Hidd, and air freight at Bahrain International Airport.

Transit times below are freight-industry estimates, not official figures, and vary with sailing schedules, transhipment and Gulf congestion:

  • Sea freight (FCL/LCL), Gothenburg → Bahrain: roughly 4–7 weeks door-to-port, usually transhipped via a hub such as a Mediterranean or Gulf port.
  • Air freight: roughly 3–8 days door-to-airport, faster but far more expensive per kilo.

Plan for customs clearance on top of transit at both ends, and remember the six-month import window in Bahrain runs from your arrival, not from the shipping date.

4. The Bahrain import side

Import clearance in Bahrain is handled electronically: the importer, their representative or a licensed customs clearing agent completes a customs bill of entry and submits the supporting documents to the customs office (trade.gov; Bahrain Customs). For a household move, the core documents are the bill of lading (or air waybill), a detailed valued packing list, your passport, and — critically for the exemption — your Residence Permit with the Ministry stamp and QR code plus a clear copy of both sides of your CPR card (Bahrain Customs).

Used household goods and personal effects enter free of customs duty provided all three conditions are met: you intend to make Bahrain your new place of residence, you are the owner of the goods, and you import them within six months of your arrival (Bahrain Customs). The exemption is for used, personal-use items only. New items in the shipment are treated as ordinary imports and attract 5% customs duty and 10% VAT (Bahrain Customs; Bahrain National Portal). Bahrain’s standard VAT rate has been 10% since 2022 and is administered by the National Bureau for Revenue. Certain categories — DVDs, printed matter and media — may be held for content inspection by the Ministry of Interior, and the Gulf’s usual prohibitions (alcohol without licence, pork products, weapons, narcotics) apply. Because a single mistake on the paperwork can turn a duty-free shipment into a taxed one, most families clear through a licensed local agent.

5. Pets

Leaving Sweden. Requirements for a country outside the EU are set by that country’s veterinary authority, but the Swedish paperwork is issued by the Swedish Board of Agriculture (Jordbruksverket). Dogs and cats travelling from Sweden to a third country need an official export health certificate signed by an official veterinarian; you order the relevant certificate (for example the general Swedish export certificate for dogs and cats) from Jordbruksverket before departure and it is posted to you (Jordbruksverket; Jordbruksverket). Start early — a valid EU pet passport and up-to-date rabies vaccination are the foundation.

Entering Bahrain. Bahrain issues its own import permit through its veterinary authority (the Animal Wealth Directorate), and the standard Gulf conditions apply: microchip, current rabies vaccination, and in many cases a rabies antibody titre test, with the health certificate presented on arrival. Because these requirements are set and periodically updated by Bahrain — not by Sweden — confirm the exact current permit, vaccination timing and any titre requirement directly with Bahrain’s veterinary authority before you book flights, as Jordbruksverket itself advises that destination rules are determined by the receiving country (Jordbruksverket).

6. Vehicles, money and things people forget

Vehicles. If you export a car, first de-register it with the Swedish Transport Agency (Transportstyrelsen) and list it specifically on the customs export declaration (Tullverket). Bahrain applies duty and VAT to imported vehicles and has its own type-approval and registration rules — for many movers, selling in Sweden and buying locally is simpler than importing.

Money. You must notify Tullverket if you carry the equivalent of EUR 10,000 or more in cash or equivalent assets to or from Sweden; from 1 April 2026 this also applies to travel to and from other EU states (Tullverket).

Commonly forgotten: de-register the vehicle before you ship; keep proof of ownership and purchase dates to distinguish used from new goods at Bahraini customs; time the container to arrive after — not before — your residence permit and CPR are active; and settle Swedish obligations (final tax return, subscriptions, deposits) that survive deregistration.

The reverse direction — Bahrain to Sweden. Moving back works in mirror image. You lodge an import declaration with Tullverket and can claim relief from customs duty and VAT on personal belongings if you have owned and used them and are settling in Sweden, using Tullverket’s declaration form 740.45 ("relief from customs duty and tax on personal belongings when migrating to Sweden") (Tullverket). You generally need to show intent to reside in Sweden for at least one year, evidenced by an employment contract, rental agreement or property purchase — not merely population registration (Tullverket). You then re-register with Skatteverket to be re-entered into the population register.

How Flyto handles your Sweden to Bahrain move

Flyto runs strong in-house European operations — our own offices, warehouses, teams and vehicles across Northern, Central and Southern Europe — so the collection, packing and export-clearance leg out of Sweden is handled directly by people we employ. For the long-haul ocean or air leg and for delivery inside Bahrain we combine that with a carefully chosen network of vetted partners and subcontractors, including trusted local agents in Bahrain who know NPRA, CPR and the six-month exemption rules. We do not pretend to do every mile ourselves; we own the parts we do best and partner deliberately for the rest.

Frequently asked questions

Do I have to deregister from Sweden before I move to Bahrain?
If your stay abroad will last a year or more, yes — you notify Skatteverket using form SKV 7665b and are removed from the population register (Skatteverket).

Will I pay Bahraini import duty on my furniture?
Not on used household goods you own and import within six months of arrival, provided you hold a valid Residence Permit and CPR card. New items are charged 5% duty plus 10% VAT (Bahrain Customs).

Which Swedish customs form do I use to export my belongings?
An export declaration (Single Administrative Document) with commodity code 9905 00 00 and procedure code 1000 for emigrant personal property (Tullverket).

Am I still taxed in Sweden after I leave?
Possibly. If you keep "essential connection" to Sweden you can remain tax resident; otherwise Swedish-source income is taxed under SINK at 22.5% in 2026. Ask Skatteverket for a determination (Skatteverket).

Can I bring my dog?
Yes, with an official export health certificate ordered from Jordbruksverket, and only if you meet Bahrain’s import-permit, microchip and rabies requirements — verify the current Bahraini conditions before booking (Jordbruksverket).

How long does the sea shipment take?
As a freight-industry estimate, roughly 4–7 weeks from Gothenburg to Bahrain, plus clearance — not an official figure, and schedule-dependent (Port of Gothenburg).
