Moving from Bahrain to Sweden (2026): Relocation Guide
Key takeaways
- Bahrain has no exit-visa system: leaving means cancelling your work permit and CPR residency through your employer, settling end-of-service pay, closing EWA utilities and your bank account, and shipping your home.
- Arriving in Sweden from outside the EU, you can import your household goods (flyttsaker) free of customs duty and VAT under transfer-of-residence relief, declared to Swedish Customs (Tullverket).
- Qualifying conditions: normal residence outside the EU for at least 12 continuous months, ownership and personal use of the goods for at least 6 months, and an intention to live in Sweden for at least a year.
- Third-country nationals get a residence permit from Migrationsverket first, then register with Skatteverket for a personnummer; a permit valid for at least 12 months is normally needed to receive one.
- Pets are simple: Bahrain is an EU-listed (Annex II) country, so a dog or cat needs no rabies antibody blood test. You need a microchip, a rabies vaccination and an EU animal health certificate. Start about a month ahead.
- Sea freight from Khalifa Bin Salman Port to Gothenburg is the usual route for a full household; air freight suits a small, urgent shipment.
1. Leaving Bahrain: what to close out
Bahrain is one of the simpler Gulf states to leave. There is no exit-visa or exit-permit system, so once your permit and accounts are settled you fly out. The paperwork that matters is tied to your residence permit and the utilities, bank and employer relationships attached to it.
Residence permit and CPR. Your residence rests on an employer-sponsored work permit linked to your CPR (Central Population Registry) number. On final departure your employer cancels the work permit through the Labour Market Regulatory Authority (LMRA), which closes your residency. The CPR number is retained on record and reactivated if you return, so this is a deactivation rather than a deletion. Get written confirmation the permit is cancelled and keep copies.
End-of-service settlement. Private-sector employees are entitled to an end-of-service leaving indemnity under Bahrain’s labour law, calculated on length of service. Agree the figure with your employer, and ensure your final salary, unused leave and the gratuity are paid while you still hold a working local bank account.
Utilities (EWA) and housing. Contact the Electricity and Water Authority (EWA) to close your electricity and water account, settle the final bill and reclaim any deposit; unpaid EWA charges accrue against the property until closure, so do this before returning the keys. Give your landlord the notice your tenancy requires and arrange the return of your rental deposit.
Bank account. Clear loans and credit-card balances, cancel standing orders, then close the account with written confirmation. Outstanding debt can complicate departure, so aim to leave with a zero balance and move remaining funds to your Swedish or an international account before you go.
Household export and pets. Your removal company handles the export declaration through Bahrain Customs and loads your container at Khalifa Bin Salman Port in Hidd. If you have a dog or cat, arrange the Bahrain export veterinary certificate through the Animal Wealth Directorate close to departure (section 5). Cancel your phone contract and gather school, medical and employment records you will need in Sweden.
2. How your household goods ship to Sweden
For a full household, sea freight is the standard route. Goods leave from Khalifa Bin Salman Port (Mina Khalifa) in Hidd, Bahrain’s main commercial seaport, operated by APM Terminals Bahrain and served by the major lines; the older Mina Salman port is linked by a causeway. Your container sails to Gothenburg (Göteborg), Sweden’s largest port and the natural gateway for the country, from where it clears customs and is delivered inland.
Sea options. A two- to three-bedroom home typically fills a 20ft or 40ft container for exclusive (FCL) use. A smaller load can travel as shared (LCL) groupage, paying for the cubic metres used while the container is consolidated with other shipments. FCL clears faster and carries less handling risk for a full home; LCL is cheaper for modest volumes but adds consolidation time.
Transit time. From the Arabian Gulf, vessels transit the Strait of Hormuz and route via the Suez Canal (or around the Cape) to Northern Europe, sometimes trans-shipping at a hub port before the final leg to Gothenburg. Allow several weeks door to door once you include collection, export clearance, the ocean leg, import clearance and inland delivery. Treat any single quoted figure as indicative, since schedules, groupage waiting times and customs vary. Pack an essentials set to cover the gap.
Air freight. For a small, urgent shipment (clothes, documents, a few valuables), air freight from Bahrain International Airport to Stockholm Arlanda or Gothenburg takes days rather than weeks. It costs much more per kilo, so reserve it for essentials and high-value items, with the bulk following by sea.
Documentation. Prepare a detailed, valued inventory in the mover’s format and gather your identity and residence documents. Swedish customs relief depends on the paperwork, so read section 3 before your goods are sealed.
3. Sweden customs & transfer-of-residence relief
Sweden grants relief from customs duty and VAT on the personal property (belongings) of someone moving their normal residence to Sweden from outside the EU. This is handled by Swedish Customs (Tullverket), and household goods are declared as flyttsaker.
Who qualifies. According to Tullverket, you must have had your normal residence outside the EU for a continuous period of at least one year; the items must have belonged to you for at least 6 months before departure; you or someone in your household must have used them for at least 6 months in your residence outside the EU; and you must intend to live in Sweden for at least one year. You have one year from arriving to bring your belongings in.
How it is declared. You (or your removal company acting for you) submit a customs declaration together with the Declaration for Relief from Customs Duty form. It is possible to obtain the duty-free allowance in advance if you intend to move your normal residence within six months, by providing a guarantee for the duty, VAT and other taxes and submitting the declaration; the guarantee is released once relief is confirmed. Keep proof of your prior residence outside the EU and your ownership of the goods ready.
Conditions after import. During the first year from the date relief is granted, you must not sell, rent out, lend, give away or pledge the items covered, or you must notify Swedish Customs and pay the duty, VAT and other fees. Alcohol, tobacco, vehicles and certain other categories follow separate rules and limits.
4. Arriving: registration, residence, driving, healthcare
Residence permit (Migrationsverket). As a Bahraini or other non-EU (third-country) national, you must obtain a residence permit from the Swedish Migration Agency (Migrationsverket) before moving, on the basis that fits your situation such as work, study, family or an EU Blue Card. In most cases you should have your decision, and often your residence permit card, before you travel. This permit is the foundation for everything that follows.
Personnummer (Skatteverket). Once you have arrived with a valid residence permit, register your move to Sweden with the Swedish Tax Agency (Skatteverket) to receive a personnummer (personal identity number), the key to banking, healthcare, salary and most services. As a non-EU national you must show a valid Swedish residence permit when notifying Skatteverket. A permit valid for at least 12 months is normally required to be entered in the population register and receive a personnummer; with a shorter permit you may instead get a coordination number (samordningsnummer). Notify the move through Skatteverket’s e-service and book an in-person appointment.
ID card. After you have a personnummer you can apply for a Swedish ID card from Skatteverket, which many banks and services ask for. Bring your passport and residence permit card.
Driving. A driving licence issued outside the EEA is generally valid in Sweden for a limited period after you settle, but Sweden exchanges non-EEA licences only from a very small number of countries (such as Japan and Switzerland). Bahrain is not among them, so plan to obtain a Swedish licence by taking the required theory and practical tests through Transportstyrelsen and an approved driving school. Check the current rules for your situation before relying on a foreign licence.
Healthcare. Once you are registered in the population register with a personnummer, you have access to Sweden’s public healthcare on the same terms as residents, paying standard patient fees. Before you are registered, or if you hold only a coordination number, arrange private or employer insurance to cover the gap. Register with a local health centre (vårdcentral) once you have your personnummer.
5. Pets
Bringing a dog or cat from Bahrain to Sweden is genuinely simple, because Bahrain is an EU-listed third country (Annex II). That listing removes the step that most complicates moves from other countries: your pet does not need a rabies antibody titration (blood) test, and there is no three-month waiting period tied to such a test.
What your pet needs to enter the EU:
- Microchip — an ISO-standard 15-digit microchip, implanted first so it can be linked to the later records.
- Rabies vaccination — given after the microchip. You must wait at least 21 days after completion of the primary vaccination before travelling.
- EU animal health certificate — issued by an official veterinarian, describing the animal and confirming the microchip and rabies vaccination. This is the document Swedish border control checks on entry.
Leaving Bahrain: you also need a Bahrain export/veterinary health certificate to take your pet out. This is issued through Bahrain’s Ministry of Agriculture Animal Wealth Directorate (Veterinary Quarantine Office) by, or endorsed via, an approved veterinarian close to departure. Because vaccination and certificate timing set the schedule, start about a month ahead: microchip and vaccinate first (if not already done), leave the 21-day gap, then obtain the certificates near your flight date.
On arrival: pets entering the EU from a third country must come through an approved Travellers’ Point of Entry, where documents are checked. Fly your pet into a Swedish airport with the right facilities as an accompanied, non-commercial movement (owner travelling within five days of the pet). No blood test, no long quarantine, no titre wait. Sweden dropped its former tapeworm treatment requirement for dogs, so the EU-wide rules above are what apply.
6. Money, banking & tax basics
Banking. To open a Swedish bank account you generally need a personnummer and Swedish ID, so registration with Skatteverket usually comes first; some banks accept a coordination number and passport in the interim. Keep a Bahraini or international account open until your final salary, end-of-service payment and deposit refunds have cleared, then close the Bahraini account with written confirmation.
Moving your money. Transfer larger sums through a regulated bank or a licensed currency specialist rather than carrying cash; €10,000 or more must be declared at the EU border. Manage the Bahraini dinar to Swedish krona timing and keep records, since clean documentation supports both customs relief and your tax position.
Tax residence. You generally become a Swedish tax resident once you are registered and living in Sweden, and residents are taxed on worldwide income. New arrivals in certain higher-earning or expert roles may qualify for expert tax relief (a partial reduction for a limited period) if the conditions are met; check eligibility early, as it must be applied for. Plan the timing of your move and any final Bahraini income, and take professional advice if you have investments, property or a pension.
Records. Keep your Migrationsverket decision, personnummer notification, inventory, EWA and bank closure confirmations and end-of-service documents together. They underpin your customs relief, your registration and later tax questions.
How Flyto handles your Bahrain to Sweden move
Flyto Relocation runs its own hubs across Northern, Central and Southern Europe, so your Bahrain to Sweden move is coordinated end to end rather than passed between disconnected agents. Frequently asked questions
Does my dog or cat need a rabies blood test to enter Sweden from Bahrain?
No. Bahrain is an EU-listed (Annex II) third country, so no rabies antibody titration test is required. You need a microchip, a rabies vaccination given at least 21 days before travel, and an EU animal health certificate from an official vet. See the European Commission EU pet travel rules.
Do I need an exit visa to leave Bahrain?
No. Bahrain has no exit-visa system. Your employer cancels your work permit and CPR residency through the LMRA; you settle utilities, bank and end-of-service benefits, then depart. See the Bahrain national portal.
Will I pay customs duty and VAT on my household goods in Sweden?
Not if you qualify for transfer-of-residence relief: at least 12 months’ normal residence outside the EU, ownership and use of the goods for at least 6 months, and intention to live in Sweden for a year. See Tullverket.
How do I get a personnummer?
Get your residence permit from Migrationsverket first, then notify your move to Skatteverket and attend an appointment; a permit valid for at least 12 months is normally needed to receive a personnummer. See Skatteverket.
Can I exchange my Bahraini driving licence in Sweden?
No. Sweden exchanges non-EEA licences only from a very small number of countries, and Bahrain is not one of them, so plan to take the Swedish tests. See Transportstyrelsen.
How far ahead should I start the pet process?
About one month. Microchip and vaccinate first, leave the mandatory 21-day gap after the rabies shot, then obtain the Bahrain export certificate and EU animal health certificate close to the flight. No blood test or long quarantine applies.
