Removals from the UK to Sweden 2026: Costs, Customs, Transit and Registration
Short answer: Removals from the UK to Sweden cost about €4,000–4,400 (≈ £3,400–3,750) for a 5–15 m³ flat and €6,000–7,250 (≈ £5,100–6,150) for a 15–25 m³ home, based on Flyto’s 2026 quotes incl. VAT; full packing (Platinum) adds €1,300–1,700. The 1,900–2,100 km journey is three driving days, so allow 4–6 days door to door. A UK export declaration and a Swedish transfer-of-residence declaration (form Tv 740.45) are required; used household goods are then free of duty and VAT.
Moving house from the UK to Sweden is a 2,000 km road move with one hard difference from a move to France or Germany: since 2021 every removal lorry crossing the Channel leaves UK customs territory and enters the EU’s. Your belongings still travel duty-free, but only if the paperwork is lodged correctly at both ends. Below: what British households were actually quoted in 2026, the route and transit time, the customs and residence steps in order, and how to compare movers on this corridor.
What removals from the UK to Sweden cost in 2026
The figures below are Flyto’s own quotes for moves from the UK to Sweden in 2026, not a price list. Every move is priced on volume, the two addresses, the dates and access at both ends; the table shows the median and the interquartile range (p25–p75) of what customers were quoted. Prices include VAT and are rounded to the nearest €50. Pound figures are approximate at 1 € ≈ £0.85.
| Volume band | Quotes | Silver (median, p25–p75) | Gold (median, p25–p75) | Platinum (median) |
|---|---|---|---|---|
| 5–15 m³ (studio to one-bedroom flat) | 4 | €4,150 (€4,000–4,150) ≈ £3,550 | €4,400 (€4,200–4,400) ≈ £3,750 | €5,700 ≈ £4,850 |
| 15–25 m³ (two- to three-bedroom home) | 5 | €6,150 (€6,000–6,650) ≈ £5,250 | €6,500 (€6,400–7,250) ≈ £5,500 | €8,200 ≈ £6,950 |

Flyto quote data 2026, UK to Sweden, n = 20 quotes, median distance 1,991 km, incl. VAT.
The same volumes moving to Sweden from inside the EU cost less, because there is no customs handling and the road leg is shorter:
| Corridor (median distance) | 15–25 m³ Silver | 15–25 m³ Gold | 25–40 m³ Silver | 25–40 m³ Gold |
|---|---|---|---|---|
| Netherlands to Sweden (1,500 km, n = 47) | €4,900 | €5,450 | €6,700 | €8,000 |
| Germany to Sweden (1,029 km, n = 39) | €4,150 | €4,600 | €4,600 | €5,350 |
Flyto quote data 2026, medians incl. VAT. The UK premium of roughly €1,000–2,000 on a 15–25 m³ move reflects the Channel crossing, the extra 500–950 km and the export and import customs handling, which Flyto includes in the price for UK moves.
What Silver, Gold and Platinum include
- Silver: dedicated transport, one mover who loads and unloads together with you, CMR road transport insurance. You pack the boxes; furniture protection, assembly and materials are add-ons.
- Gold: transport plus two professional movers (three above 30 m³) who load, carry and unload into the agreed rooms; CMR insurance. You pack the boxes.
- Platinum: everything in Gold plus full packing into Flyto boxes, all materials, furniture protection, disassembly and reassembly, unpacking onto surfaces and removal of empty boxes.
- Pallet freight (1–6 m³): a few boxes or a small flat travel palletised in a shared freight network at the lowest price; you pack and palletise.
What moves the price
- Volume is the main driver; a survey fixes it before loading. Access matters next: a fourth-floor walk-up in Södermalm adds carrying time, and work beyond the agreed scope is billed at €85 per hour per mover.
- Parking permits and external lifts are never included; Flyto arranges them on request at actual cost plus €50 handling. Typical customer cost is about €200 per side for a permit and about €600 per side for a furniture lift.
- Dates: end-of-month and summer collections cost more; a few days’ flexibility lowers the quote, and short-notice moves under two weeks are priced as dedicated runs.
- Customs: the UK export and Swedish import declarations are included. Any duty or VAT the authorities charge on goods that do not qualify for relief (a car owned under six months, alcohol) is not.
- Storage in a Flyto warehouse costs €100 per month per 6 m³ container plus a one-off €15 per m³ handling fee, useful when a Swedish tenancy starts after the UK one ends.
The international removals cost guide for the UK compares this corridor with other European destinations from Britain.
The route: Channel crossing, Germany, Denmark and the Øresund
A removal lorry from England covers about 1,900–2,100 km to Stockholm, roughly 1,400 km to Malmö and 1,700 km to Gothenburg. There are two ways across the Channel and two ways across the Baltic; a good mover chooses by destination and ferry timing.
Crossing the Channel
- Dover–Calais: P&O Ferries runs 11–15 sailings a day, about 90 minutes each (P&O Ferries).
- Dover–Dunkirk: DFDS sails up to 22 times a day, a two-hour crossing (DFDS).
- Folkestone–Calais by rail: LeShuttle Freight carries lorries through the tunnel in 35 minutes, with up to six departures an hour at peak (LeShuttle Freight).
- Harwich–Hook of Holland: Stena Line sails four times a day, from 6 hours 30 minutes (Stena Line). An overnight sailing lets the driver rest on board, which suits moves from East Anglia, the Midlands and the North.
From the continent into Sweden
- Via Denmark and the Øresund Bridge: A1/A7 past Hamburg to Flensburg, E45 through Jutland, the Great Belt Bridge and the Øresund Bridge into Malmö. At the time of writing (tariff valid from 14 September 2026) a 6–9 m van pays DKK 840–940 one way on the standard tariff and a vehicle over 9 m DKK 1,485–1,655; hauliers with a business contract pay less (Øresundsbron – prices). This all-road option suits Stockholm, Gothenburg and the south.
- Via the Puttgarden–Rødby ferry: Scandlines’ 45-minute crossing shortcuts the drive around Jutland (Scandlines); from Rødby it is about 160 km to the Øresund Bridge.
- Via Travemünde–Trelleborg: TT-Line sails up to four times a day each way from near Lübeck directly into Skåne, 7½ hours by day and 9½ hours overnight, which lets the driver take the daily rest at sea before a Malmö or Lund delivery.
Transit time
EU rules cap a lorry driver at 9 hours a day (10 hours twice a week), with a 45-minute break after 4½ hours and an 11-hour daily rest (European Commission – driving time and rest periods). At roughly 600–700 km per driving day, London to Stockholm is three driving days plus the ferry. Typical, not guaranteed, timings:
| Service | Typical door-to-door time, England to Sweden |
|---|---|
| Dedicated vehicle (Silver, Gold, Platinum) | 4–6 days including loading, customs transit and unloading; 3–5 days to Malmö or Gothenburg |
| Shared or consolidated load, pallet freight | Collection date plus a 5–10 day delivery window |
If the export declaration or transit document is wrong, the lorry waits at the port or at the Swedish customs office until it is corrected; that is the usual reason a delivery slips by a day.
Customs: what leaves the UK and what enters Sweden
Household goods on this corridor go through two customs procedures, one British and one Swedish. A competent mover files both; you supply the documents.
Leaving Great Britain
- Goods leaving the UK for the EU need an export declaration in HMRC’s Customs Declaration Service, lodged by the exporter or an agent with a GB EORI number (GOV.UK – Export goods from the UK). The removal company or its broker declares under its own EORI, so you do not need one.
- At Dover and Eurotunnel the haulier must present a Goods Movement Reference (GMR) from the Goods Vehicle Movement Service; at Harwich, Stena Line may require or offer one. For GB-to-EU exports the GMR must contain the declaration reference (DUCR) of every export declaration on the vehicle (GOV.UK – Get a goods movement reference; GOV.UK – Ports using GVMS).
- Prepare a packing list in English. Swedish Customs wants capital goods (vehicles, televisions, computers) itemised and lets you group the rest as, for example, books, kitchenware, linen and clothing (Tullverket – Tull- och momsfrihet för dig som flyttar till Sverige).
Entering the EU and clearing in Sweden
At Calais, Dunkirk or Hook of Holland the goods are placed under transit and driven under customs control to Sweden, where the import declaration and relief claim are made. Tullverket’s guidance for a road move from outside the EU describes exactly this: start a transit with a guarantee at the first EU customs office, drive through Germany and Denmark, and present the transit, packing list and goods at a Swedish customs office, where the officer helps lodge the import declaration (Tullverket – FAQ on customs exemption for personal belongings).
Relief from Swedish import duty and VAT on removal goods (flyttsakstullfrihet, Articles 3–11 of Regulation (EC) No 1186/2009) is granted when all of the following are true (Tullverket – Duty and VAT relief when moving to Sweden):
- You have had your normal home outside the EU for a continuous period of at least one year.
- Each item has belonged to you and been used by you or your household for at least six months before the move, in the country where you had your normal home.
- You intend to live in Sweden for at least one year and to use the goods for the same purpose in your new home.
- The goods arrive within one year of the day you arrive in Sweden to settle; more than one shipment within that year is fine.
- You do not sell, hire out, lend, give away or pledge the goods within a year of the customs declaration; if you do, you must tell Tullverket first and pay the duty and VAT. Tullverket grants no dispensation from this time limit.
- Alcohol and tobacco in a removal load are dutiable, apart from the traveller’s allowance you carry personally. Commercial vehicles and certain professional tools and equipment are also excluded. Private cars, motorcycles, caravans and boats can be included if they meet the same six-month ownership and use test.
The claim is made on the form Försäkran för flyttsakstullfrihet för inflyttare, published in English as Tv 740.45 ”Declaration for obtaining relief from customs duty and tax on personal belongings when migrating to Sweden” (issue 4, April 2026), signed by the person moving (Tullverket – form Tv 740.45). It accompanies the import declaration, in which the removal goods are declared under commodity code 9905 00 00 00 with additional procedure codes C01 (duty) and F45 (VAT); anything subject to import restrictions is declared under its own code. You may lodge it yourself at a customs office or hand it, with the supporting documents, to a forwarding agent or removal firm that handles the clearance. Tullverket may ask for proof of the move (residence permit or Skatteverket’s registration decision), evidence of your home outside the EU (tenancy contract, employer’s letter) and receipts for higher-value items.
Goods can be sent up to six months ahead of you against a declaration that you will move within six months and a guarantee for the duty and VAT (Tullverket – Moving to and from Sweden). Most people avoid the guarantee by timing the lorry to arrive a few days after they do.
Residence, registration and the first weeks in Sweden
Before you move: a residence permit
British citizens who were not resident in Sweden before 31 December 2020 have no free-movement rights and must apply for a residence permit like any other non-EU national; the Withdrawal Agreement route closed on 31 December 2021 except for family members and children of people who already hold residence status (Migrationsverket – British citizens). Under the work-permit rules that took effect on 1 June 2026, you need a salary of at least SEK 34,470 a month (90 per cent of the Swedish median, figure updated 16 June 2026) and comprehensive health insurance (Migrationsverket – Work). Get the decision before you book the lorry; Tullverket accepts it as proof of the move.
On arrival: population registration and personnummer
If you will live in Sweden for a year or more, register in the Population Register with Skatteverket. The ”Flytta till Sverige” e-service, available in English, can be submitted up to 14 days before you arrive; upload every passport page containing information, then book an in-person identity check at a state service centre with your original documents and residence permit card. It takes about four weeks for the case to be assigned, after which you receive your personnummer, which a bank, employer, landlord and healthcare region will all ask for (Skatteverket – Moving to Sweden).
Tell HMRC you have left
Use form P85 if you do not file Self Assessment, or the residence pages (SA109) of your return if you do; split-year treatment can make you non-resident from the day after you leave (GOV.UK – Tax if you leave the UK to live abroad).
Healthcare
A UK GHIC covers temporary visits of up to 90 days, not living abroad. UK State Pensioners and posted workers may be entitled to an S1, which must be registered promptly in Sweden; everyone else is covered by the Swedish system once registered with a personnummer (NHS – Planning your healthcare when moving abroad).
Driving licence
A UK licence is an exception to Sweden’s one-year rule for non-EEA licences: you may keep driving on it even after more than a year as a registered resident (Transportstyrelsen – Ha utländskt körkort i Sverige). You can exchange it without a test once you are permanently resident and registered in the population register, enclosing a certificate of entitlement from the DVLA (Transportstyrelsen – Byta ut körkort från Förenade kungariket). The stricter exchange rules that took effect on 1 May 2026 target EEA licences that were themselves obtained by exchanging a non-EEA licence; the UK stays on the list of countries whose licences Sweden exchanges directly (Transportstyrelsen – press release 4 May 2026). There is no deadline for the exchange. Licences from Jersey, Guernsey and the Isle of Man are different: they are valid for only 12 months and cannot be exchanged (GOV.UK – Living in Sweden).
Taking a car
Send the permanent-export section of the V5C to the DVLA (GOV.UK – Taking vehicles out of the UK). In Sweden the car is cleared by Tullverket (relief after six months’ ownership and use), then Transportstyrelsen runs origin control (ursprungskontroll) on the registration document, the customs proof with its Swedish customs ID and the bill of sale, followed by a registration inspection (Transportstyrelsen – Import från länder utanför EU).
Dogs and cats
Your dog or cat needs a microchip fitted before the rabies vaccination, a 21-day wait after a first vaccination, and an Animal Health Certificate valid for 10 days for entry into the EU and six months of travel within it (GOV.UK – Taking your pet abroad). It is checked at the first EU point of entry (Calais, Dunkirk or Hook of Holland). Sweden does not require tapeworm treatment, but you must declare the animal in the red channel on entry (Jordbruksverket – Ta in hundar från länder utanför EU). Pets travel with you, not in the removal lorry.
Parking the lorry in Stockholm, Gothenburg and Malmö
A 12-metre removal lorry rarely fits a legal bay outside a flat in Vasastan or Majorna, and each city has its own permit:
- Stockholm: apply to the traffic office for a dispensation from the local traffic regulations at least a week ahead; a parking dispensation costs SEK 800, with a decision usually within five working days (Stockholms stad – Ansök om dispens).
- Gothenburg: the city names a house move as a valid reason for a dispensation from the local traffic regulations (dispens från lokala trafikföreskrifter). It is applied for on a paper form posted to Stadsmiljöförvaltningen, costs SEK 500 per dispensation and is granted only for the shortest time and distance the job needs, and only if there is no ordinary parking nearby (Göteborgs Stad – Dispens från lokala trafikföreskrifter). The commercial parking permit (nyttoparkeringstillstånd) is not the right tool: it excludes loading and unloading goods.
- Malmö: a temporary traffic dispensation explicitly covers removal work; apply online at least a week ahead with the registration number, address and dates, handling fee SEK 250 (Malmö stad – Tillfällig trafikdispens).
UK councils issue bay suspensions with similar lead times. Flyto applies for both on request, typically about €200 per side.
How to compare removal companies on this corridor
Quotes for the same flat vary by thousands of pounds, mostly because they do not describe the same service. Check these points before comparing the bottom line:
- Fixed price or estimate? Ask whether the figure is binding after a survey or can rise on the day, and whether fuel, ferry and toll surcharges are inside it.
- Who loads and unloads? A transport-only price is not comparable with a two-man crew carrying to the fourth floor. Confirm crew size and the rate for extra hours.
- Customs competence. Ask who lodges the UK export declaration, who creates the GMR, who starts the EU transit and who files form Tv 740.45, and whether those fees are in the price.
- Insurance basis. Standard cover is carrier liability under the CMR Convention, a weight-based limit, not the value of your things. Ask the price of value-based cover and whether owner-packed boxes are covered.
- Delivery window. A dedicated lorry gives a date; a groupage service gives a window, and is usually the cheaper one.
- Verifiable reviews and membership. Read recent Google reviews under the trading name on the quote. In the UK, membership of the British Association of Removers brings an approved ombudsman and a pre-payment guarantee scheme for international moves (British Association of Removers).
- One contract. If three firms handle collection, crossing and delivery, ask who is liable for damage found in Stockholm.

How Flyto handles the UK to Sweden corridor
Flyto runs UK to Sweden moves as one contract with one contact person: the price is fixed before loading, the load is insured door to door, and the UK export declaration, the EU transit and the Swedish transfer-of-residence declaration are handled within the price. Flyto’s Central Europe hub in Viersen near Düsseldorf lies on the route, and partner depots in every major European city cover UK collections and Swedish deliveries outside the main cities. Relocation services such as home search, registration paperwork and settling-in are available as an add-on through vetted partners.
Frequently asked questions
How much does a removal from the UK to Sweden cost?
Flyto’s 2026 quotes had a median of €4,150 (about £3,550) for 5–15 m³ with one mover (Silver) and €6,150–6,500 (about £5,250–5,500) for 15–25 m³ with one or two movers. Full packing (Platinum) was €5,700 and €8,200. Prices include VAT and customs handling.
How long does a removal from the UK to Sweden take?
A dedicated lorry typically takes 4–6 days door to door to Stockholm and 3–5 days to Malmö or Gothenburg, including loading, the Channel crossing, customs transit and unloading. A shared load or pallet freight has a 5–10 day delivery window after collection.
Will I pay Swedish customs duty or VAT on my furniture?
Not on used household goods if you qualify: at least one year of normal residence outside the EU, six months’ ownership and use of the items, an intention to live in Sweden for a year or more, and arrival of the goods within a year of your own arrival. The claim is made on form Tv 740.45 with the import declaration. Alcohol and tobacco in the load are dutiable, and you may not sell or lend the goods for a year.
Do I need my own EORI number or customs agent?
No. For a private household move the removal company or its customs broker lodges the UK export declaration under its own EORI number and creates the Goods Movement Reference for the port. In Sweden you sign the relief declaration and hand it, with your supporting documents, to the mover or agent, who files the import declaration.
Can my belongings arrive in Sweden before I do?
Yes. Tullverket grants relief in advance if you declare that you will move your normal residence to Sweden within six months and provide a guarantee for the duty and VAT, released once you have moved. Most customers avoid the guarantee by having the lorry arrive a few days after them.
Do I need a residence permit before the removal lorry leaves?
In practice yes. British citizens without Withdrawal Agreement status need a residence permit from Migrationsverket to live in Sweden, and the permit decision or Skatteverket’s registration decision is what Tullverket accepts as proof that you are transferring your residence. Book the lorry once the permit is granted.
Can I use my UK driving licence in Sweden?
Yes. A UK licence remains valid for driving in Sweden even after more than a year as a registered resident, an exception to the normal rule for non-EEA licences. You can exchange it for a Swedish licence without a test by applying to Transportstyrelsen with the original licence and a DVLA certificate of entitlement; there is no deadline.
Can my dog travel in the removal lorry?
No. Pets travel with their owner under their own documents: microchip, rabies vaccination with a 21-day wait after a first dose, and an Animal Health Certificate issued within 10 days of entering the EU, checked at Calais, Dunkirk or Hook of Holland. Sweden does not require tapeworm treatment, but you must declare the animal in the red channel on entry.
