Moving from New Zealand to Australia is the biggest move Kiwis make: net migration across the Tasman runs at tens of thousands a year, with Brisbane, the Gold Coast, Sydney, Melbourne and Perth the main destinations. It is also the easiest international move in the world on paper – no visa for New Zealand citizens under the Special Category Visa, duty-free household goods, the same voltage and the same driving side – and one of the most annoying in practice, because Australian biosecurity treats a Kiwi’s muddy tramping boots exactly the way it treats anyone else’s.

Flyto Relocation arranges door-to-door trans-Tasman removals from Auckland, Wellington, Christchurch, Hamilton and Dunedin through vetted partner crews in New Zealand, sea freight contracted with established carriers, and destination partners in every Australian capital. We do not own ships and we do not claim an office in New Zealand – we manage the freight, the paperwork at both ends and the delivery, and stay your single point of contact throughout.

The east coast is a short sea leg from Auckland or Tauranga; Perth adds a week and the crossing of the Bight. Prices exclude the Australian quarantine inspection by the Department of Agriculture, Fisheries and Forestry (typically AUD 300–900), any cleaning DAFF orders, and storage if your Australian address is not ready. A move from the South Island adds coastal freight or a truck to Auckland or Lyttelton.

Australian customs and biosecurity for Kiwis

New Zealand citizens moving to Australia import used household goods duty- and GST-free, declared on the Unaccompanied Personal Effects Statement (form B534) with your passport and an inventory; goods must have been owned and used for at least 12 months. New items and alcohol are dutiable. The Special Category Visa is granted on arrival, so there is no visa paperwork before the container ships – but B534 still needs your arrival date.

Biosecurity is the same regime as from anywhere else, and Kiwi households fail it in predictable ways: tramping boots and gumboots with soil, mountain bikes and kids’ bikes, tents and camping gear, fishing rods and dive gear with residue, garden tools and outdoor furniture, pōhutukawa seeds and native plants, untreated pine shelving with bark, and the vacuum cleaner with a full bag. Everything with a wheel, a sole or a blade is cleaned to a visibly spotless standard before packing; wooden furniture is checked for bark and borer. Our crews document it at loading, because the alternative is cleaning or fumigation in Australia at your cost.

Leaving New Zealand: what to sort before the container ships

Household goods leave New Zealand without export duty; your mover files the export entry. Tell IRD you are leaving (tax residency changes after 325 days abroad, and earlier if you have no enduring place of abode in NZ), keep or transfer your KiwiSaver (it can be transferred to an Australian complying super fund under the trans-Tasman portability scheme), and cancel or transfer your NZ Super and benefits – Australia and New Zealand have a social security agreement. Notify the NZTA if you are taking a car.

Cars, pets and the practical differences

Cars are the one trans-Tasman item that often makes sense: New Zealand and Australia are both right-hand drive, and a NZ-complied car can be imported with a Vehicle Import Approval and state registration, though compliance costs and stamp duty mean it is only worthwhile for a good, recent vehicle. Cats and dogs from New Zealand do not need quarantine in Australia – one of the few countries with that privilege – but need a vet health certificate and export permit. Voltage and plugs are identical, so every appliance works. Medicare is available to New Zealand citizens on arrival.

The route

Collection and export packing at home, photographed inventory (which becomes your B534 list), export entry at Auckland, Tauranga, Wellington or Lyttelton, then the sea leg to Brisbane, Sydney, Melbourne, Fremantle or Adelaide. Customs and quarantine inspection take one to two weeks on arrival; the destination partner then delivers, unpacks if booked and removes the packing material. Shared containers wait for consolidation and take one to two weeks longer than dedicated ones – on the Tasman, consolidations run weekly.

Booking window: 3–5 weeks before your preferred collection date for a dedicated container, 4–6 weeks for a shared container in the January–February and June–July peaks.

Moving from Australia back to New Zealand

The same partners handle the reverse move. Household goods owned and used for 12 months are duty- and GST-free on arrival in New Zealand (NZCS 218), and MPI biosecurity is as strict as DAFF – the cleaning rules apply in both directions.

Why Flyto for moving from New Zealand to Australia

One contract and one fixed price for the whole door-to-door move including the sea leg, NZ export entry and Australian customs brokerage; export-grade packing with a photographed inventory that doubles as your B534 list; vetted crews in Auckland, Wellington, Christchurch and the regions and destination partners in every Australian capital; and honest logistics – we tell you upfront what DAFF will pull from a Kiwi household, rather than letting the inspection tell you at your expense.

Frequently asked questions

How long does moving from New Zealand to Australia take?

Two to four weeks door to door for a dedicated container, three to five for a shared container, including customs and quarantine on arrival.

Do I pay duty on my household goods?

No, if you have owned and used them for at least 12 months and declare them on form B534. New items and alcohol are dutiable.

Do my pets need quarantine in Australia?

No – cats and dogs from New Zealand are exempt from quarantine but need a vet certificate and export permit.

Do you collect in the South Island?

Yes – Christchurch, Dunedin, Queenstown, Nelson and rural addresses, via Lyttelton or trucked to Auckland.
