Relocating from Denmark to Ghana means closing out two separate administrative systems: Denmark’s population register and customs authority on the way out, and Ghana’s immigration and customs regime on the way in. This guide is written for a Danish resident — Danish national or long-term resident — planning a household move to Accra, Kumasi, or elsewhere in Ghana, and it covers both halves of the corridor: what Denmark requires before you leave, and what Ghana requires when your shipment and your life arrive. A short section at the end also covers the reverse move, Ghana back to Denmark.

Key takeaways

  • You must register your move abroad with your Danish municipality via CPR if you’ll be gone more than 6 months, or you remain registered incorrectly at a Danish address — see CPR: flytning til udlandet and borger.dk on departures over 6 months.
  • Full Danish tax liability generally ends only when you no longer have a residence at your disposal in Denmark, and the burden of proof is on you — see Skattestyrelsen’s legal guide C.F.1.2.3.
  • Denmark’s customs authority is Toldstyrelsen; moving your household goods out of the EU still involves export customs formalities even though no export duty applies to used personal belongings — see Toldstyrelsen for individuals.
  • On arrival in Ghana, unaccompanied baggage/personal effects must be declared to Customs on the "Passengers Unaccompanied Baggage Declaration" (PUBD) form within 48 hours of arrival, or the duty concession is forfeited — GRA: Passengers’ Obligations at Customs.
  • Ghana’s duty-free "removal articles" concession, as published by GRA, is written for Ghanaians who have lived abroad continuously for more than 12 months and are moving their residence home — it is not a guaranteed blanket concession for foreign nationals, so budget for the possibility that duty applies to your shipment and confirm your specific treatment with a customs broker before you ship — GRA: Passengers’ Obligations at Customs.
  • Used vehicles older than 15 years (from date of manufacture) will be barred from import into Ghana from 1 October 2026, and units must be inspected abroad for a Certificate of Conformance — Ghana Standards Authority.
  • Pets need an import permit from Ghana’s Veterinary Services Department plus proof of vaccination and a veterinary health certificate, and dogs face an additional panel of disease tests — VSD: Import Requirements.
  • Staying beyond a short visit in Ghana requires a residence permit from Ghana Immigration Service, usually issued alongside a work permit for employees — GIS: Permits and Visas.

1. Your Ghana immigration status decides your customs treatment

Ghana Immigration Service (GIS) admits most foreign nationals on a short-stay entry visa for an initial period that varies by nationality and visa category; anyone planning to stay longer must convert to a residence permit, which for employees is issued alongside a work permit tied to an employment contract and an approved quota (GIS: Permits and Visas). Visas issued abroad can themselves be valid for anywhere from six months to five years, but that is the window in which the visa can be used to enter, not an automatic length of stay — check your specific visa conditions with GIS or Ghana’s diplomatic mission before you travel (same source).

This status matters for your shipment too, but be realistic about what it buys you. Ghana Customs’ published "removal articles" duty concession is written specifically for Ghanaians who have lived abroad continuously for more than twelve months and are moving their residence home — GRA’s public guidance does not spell out an equivalent blanket duty-free concession for foreign nationals arriving on a work or residence permit (GRA: Passengers’ Obligations at Customs). In practice, expatriate movers still routinely bring in ordinary used household effects, but duty treatment is assessed case by case at the point of entry rather than guaranteed by right. Before your sea freight leaves Denmark, get a written assessment from a licensed Ghanaian customs broker or your relocation company on how your specific shipment is likely to be treated, and keep your permit application evidence, employment contract, and proof of your prior Danish address together with your shipping documents — they support your case even where full duty relief isn’t available.

Also note the entry visa itself has document requirements unrelated to customs: a passport valid at least 6 months, recent photos taken within the last 3 months, a return ticket or travel itinerary, and a Yellow Fever vaccination certificate (GIS: Permits and Visas).

2. The Denmark export side

Population register (CPR). Before leaving, notify your municipality digitally that you are moving abroad. If your stay abroad will exceed 6 months you must be registered as "udrejst" (departed) in CPR; if it’s 6 months or less you may keep your CPR registration only if you retain full control of a Danish residence during the absence, meaning it cannot be sublet, loaned, or rented out (CPR: flytning til udlandet; borger.dk: udrejse over 6 måneder). Once registered as departed, Danish authorities do not automatically learn your foreign address — you must report it yourself to your last Danish municipality, and any later address change abroad also goes through them (cpr.dk on registered departures).

Tax residency (Skattestyrelsen). Full Danish tax liability does not end automatically just because you deregister from CPR. The decisive factor is whether you retain a year-round residence at your disposal in Denmark (e.g. a home you keep, rather than fully sell or rent out unconditionally); if you do, Skattestyrelsen will normally continue to treat you as fully tax liable unless you can document a genuine intention to settle permanently abroad. The burden of proving that tax liability has ended rests on you (Skattestyrelsen, C.F.1.2.3). If you own property in Denmark you intend to keep, get this assessed with Skattestyrelsen or a tax adviser before departure, since it directly affects whether Danish income tax continues to apply after the move.

Customs (Toldstyrelsen). Toldstyrelsen, the Danish Customs Agency operating under the Danish Tax Agency (Skattestyrelsen) and applying the EU Union Customs Code, is the relevant authority for goods crossing the Danish/EU border (Toldstyrelsen for individuals). Because Ghana is outside the EU customs territory, your household goods shipment requires an export declaration when it leaves the EU — in practice this is filed electronically and is normally handled by your moving company or freight forwarder under their own customs registration, not by you personally. There is no Danish export duty on used personal belongings; the formality exists to close the goods out of EU/VAT territory correctly. Keep a full inventory and, ideally, proof of ownership/purchase for higher-value items, since Ghana Customs will want equivalent documentation on the import side.

3. Ports and transit — realistic routing

Denmark’s largest container port is Aarhus, which now handles well over two-thirds of the country’s container traffic through its APM Terminals facility; Esbjerg, on Jutland’s west coast, is Denmark’s other major commercial harbour, historically strong in general and project cargo alongside its offshore-wind specialisation (Port of Aarhus; Port of Esbjerg). There is no direct scheduled container service from Denmark to Ghana; household-goods shipments are almost always trucked or short-sea fed from a Danish port to a major Northern European transhipment hub (commonly Hamburg, Antwerp, or Rotterdam) and then loaded onto a mainline service to West Africa, discharging at the Port of Tema, Ghana’s principal container port on the Greater Accra coast (Ghana Ports & Harbours Authority — Tema).

Industry estimates, not official figures: sea freight for a consolidated or full container from Denmark to Tema typically runs 5–8 weeks door-to-port, depending on the transhipment hub and sailing frequency, plus 1–3 weeks for Ghanaian customs clearance and final delivery. Air freight is faster but far costlier for household volumes, typically 5–10 days including origin/destination handling. Always confirm current transit times with your freight forwarder — these are not published by any port or customs authority and vary with vessel schedules.

4. The Ghana import side

On arrival, personal effects and unaccompanied baggage must be declared to Ghana Customs (Ghana Revenue Authority, Customs Division) on the Passengers Unaccompanied Baggage Declaration (PUBD) form, either immediately on arrival or within 48 hours; failing to declare in time may forfeit the concession (GRA: Passengers’ Obligations at Customs).

Two separate GRA concessions matter for movers, and it’s worth knowing which one you can actually rely on:

  • "Removal articles" — personal belongings, domestic appliances, normal household provisions, and pet animals — can be imported free of duties and taxes, but GRA’s published rule ties this specifically to Ghanaians who have lived outside Ghana continuously for more than 12 months and are moving their residence home. Arms, ammunition, and motor vehicles are excluded from this concession regardless of nationality (same source).
  • The general passenger baggage concession separately allows articles for household use that have been in your bona fide personal or household use for a reasonable period to travel with you duty-free as accompanied baggage; for electrical goods specifically, GRA requires at least six months of prior bona fide use to qualify (same source). This is narrower than "removal articles" and is not a guarantee of blanket duty-free treatment for a full sea shipment.

For a Danish national or foreign resident moving to Ghana for the first time, don’t assume your shipment qualifies as duty-free removal articles by default. Have your relocation company or a licensed Ghanaian customs broker confirm the applicable duty treatment before your goods leave Denmark, and budget for the possibility that duty and taxes will apply to some or all of the shipment.

Foreign currency above USD 1,000 must be declared on the Bank of Ghana Currency Declaration Form (CDF Form 4A), available via the Bank of Ghana (GRA: Passengers’ Obligations at Customs).

5. Pets

Leaving Denmark: dogs, cats, and ferrets travelling to a non-EU country need documentation appropriate to the destination, which Fødevarestyrelsen (the Danish Veterinary and Food Administration) says must be checked per destination in its certificate database, starting with a background declaration and a veterinary health certificate issued after a clinical examination. Fødevarestyrelsen advises starting the process well in advance, since some destinations’ requirements are extensive and time-consuming (Fødevarestyrelsen: rejse med kæledyr til tredjelande).

Entering Ghana: an import permit from Ghana’s Veterinary Services Department (VSD) is required for all live animals, alongside an original veterinary health certificate from the country of origin, and any relevant disease-test results the VSD asks for before issuing the permit; permits are normally issued within about 72 working hours of a complete application (VSD: Import Requirements). Dogs face additional requirements: negative test results for a specified panel of diseases (including Brucella canis, Trypanosoma evansi, Babesia gibsoni, Dirofilaria immitis, and Leishmania spp.), plus proof of vaccination — at least one month old and valid for 12 months at the point of departure — against distemper, hepatitis, parvovirus, leptospirosis, parainfluenza, and rabies (same source). Apply for the VSD import permit well ahead of your pet’s travel date, and confirm current requirements directly with VSD, since test panels and validity windows can be updated.

6. Vehicles, money, and things people forget

Vehicles. From 1 October 2026, Ghana will bar the import of used vehicles more than 15 years old (measured from year of manufacture) under GSA’s Pre-Export Verification of Conformity (PVoC) programme, and every used unit must be inspected abroad by a GSA-approved third-party body, which issues a Certificate of Conformance before shipment (Ghana Standards Authority: implementation framework; GSA: media engagement on the PVoC programme). Vehicles shipped before 1 October 2026 are not affected even if they arrive after that date. Right-hand-drive vehicles are barred under Customs law by default, with a dispensation reserved for the Minister of Trade to grant on application, and any approved unit must be dismantled and refitted to left-hand drive before it can be used on Ghanaian roads (GRA: Vehicle Importation). Duty is calculated from the vehicle’s original manufacturer price with an age-based depreciation adjustment down to a Free On Board (FOB) value, converted at the prevailing exchange rate, plus freight and insurance — so get a specific duty estimate for your vehicle before deciding to ship it rather than sell it in Denmark (same source).

Money. Cash of €10,000 or more entering or leaving the EU — including Denmark — must be declared under EU cash-control rules (Your Europe: carrying cash). On the Ghana side, foreign currency above USD 1,000 must be declared on the Bank of Ghana’s Currency Declaration Form (CDF Form 4A) on arrival (GRA: Passengers’ Obligations at Customs).

Easy to forget. A Yellow Fever certificate for entry to Ghana (GIS: Permits and Visas); keeping your CPR foreign-address notification current with your last Danish municipality so Danish authorities (pension, SU, etc.) can reach you; and, if you retain Danish property, resolving your Skattestyrelsen tax-liability status in writing rather than assuming it lapsed automatically.

How Flyto handles your Denmark to Ghana move

Flyto operates its own offices, warehouses, crews and vehicles across Northern, Central and Southern Europe, so the Danish end of your move — packing in Aarhus, Esbjerg, Copenhagen or anywhere else, export documentation, and consolidation to a mainline port — is handled in-house by our own European network, backed by a carefully chosen network of partner carriers and subcontractors for the routes and volumes our own fleet doesn’t cover. For the ocean leg to Tema and clearance and delivery inside Ghana, we work with trusted local Ghanaian partners and customs brokers who handle the realistic duty assessment, clearance, and last-mile delivery on the ground, so you get one accountable point of contact from your Danish doorstep to your new home in Ghana.

Frequently asked questions

Do I need to deregister from CPR before I leave Denmark?
Yes, if you’ll be abroad more than 6 months you must notify your municipality digitally and be registered as departed in CPR (cpr.dk).

Will I still owe Danish tax after I move to Ghana?
Possibly — full tax liability generally continues as long as you keep a residence available to you in Denmark, and you carry the burden of proving otherwise to Skattestyrelsen (info.skat.dk).

Can I bring my household goods into Ghana duty-free?
Not automatically. GRA’s duty-free "removal articles" concession is written for Ghanaians who have lived abroad continuously for more than 12 months and are moving residence home — foreign nationals shouldn’t assume the same blanket treatment applies. You must still declare unaccompanied baggage within 48 hours of arrival on the PUBD form or lose whatever concession you’re eligible for, and it’s worth getting a customs broker to confirm your specific duty treatment before you ship (GRA).

Can I ship my car to Ghana?
Only if it’s 15 years old or younger from manufacture date (enforced from 1 October 2026) and has a Certificate of Conformance from a GSA-approved inspector abroad; right-hand-drive vehicles need ministerial dispensation and mandatory left-hand conversion, and vehicles are excluded from the general duty-free removal-goods concession (GSA; GRA).

What do I need to bring my dog or cat to Ghana?
An import permit from Ghana’s Veterinary Services Department, a veterinary health certificate, and proof of vaccination; dogs additionally need a panel of negative disease-test results before a permit is issued (VSD).

Moving back from Ghana to Denmark — what changes?
The process runs largely in reverse: re-registering with a Danish municipality restores your CPR record, EU rules again govern pet entry into Denmark (Your Europe: pets and other animals), and Toldstyrelsen’s relief for personal belongings on transfer of residence into Denmark can apply to your Ghana household goods if you’ve lived outside the EU continuously for at least 12 months and intend to keep using the goods for the same purpose — the same relief is forfeited if you lend, pledge, or rent the goods out within 12 months of import (Toldstyrelsen: moving to Denmark).
